I don't know if many of you have heard about this, but here is a section of an article about it, which says:

The Federal Government has announced it will proceed with controversial plans to censor the internet after Government-commissioned trials found filtering a blacklist of banned sites was accurate and would not slow down the internet.

I do not think the government should be allowed to control what we can and can't search for on the internet .. Despite the last last sentence of the article, I know that it will slow down the internet. Everything you search for will have to go throw this blacklist. The government is planning to block over 11,000 websites, and it will grow as the years go by.

This also relates to a greater issue, if they are stopping us from searching certain things on google, they could eventually control what we watch on TV, and what we read in books!

What do you guys think of this? Do you think this is a good or a bad idea?

They did some tests on this filter, and it was blocking out some legitimate websites. The filter is due to come out some time next year.

I call BS on the "accurate" and "would not slow down the internet" parts.

I also am glad I don't live in Australia.

Yeah but thats the thing, after Australia gets the filter put into place, other countries might decide to follow. China already has an internet filter, and they have had it for a while. They have Facebook and twitter blocked …

Blocked websites are indexed to a lesser degree, if at all, by some Chinese search engines, such as Baidu and Google China. This sometimes has considerable impact on search results. According to a Harvard study, at least 18,000 websites are blocked from within mainland China.

And this off Wikipedia

According to The New York Times, Google has set up computer systems inside China that try to access Web sites outside the country. If a site is inaccessible, then it is added to Google China's blacklist. However, once (if) unblocked, the websites will be reindexed.
