There is no meaning to life.
We live what ? 80 years ? And those 80 years are nothing but years of pain.
Why not die early to avoid this pain ?
People do things in their lives you say, to help others. Yes, well is that help of any use when you know you will die in x amount of years ? When you know that someday there will be no humans left ?
What's the point of living ? Tell me !
There is none.
You say pain doesn't have to be about pain always ?
I say, you're wrong, there is always a but to everything good.
Life is useless, and I'm wondering why I even bother to live, when only bad things happen everyday.
Yes, I am crying while writing this. I cry everyday, don't know why, just cry. Cry in despair.

Did you really think before posting that ?
Love has plenty of downsides :
-You often have doubts about if your partner is loyal to your relationship or not.
-When it ends, the pain is often too big to get rid of.
-many more, just think a little and you will find them.

I wouldn't call it love if it ends.

The pain is what makes life good.
How would we have any notion of what GOOD is without BAD to compare it to?? If life was great all the time, would it really be great? Wouldn't it be just normal all the time because that is all that you knew? Just because there is pain in life doesn't mean you should give up on it. Also, you say we live for a full 80 years, that means that whatever pain you may be feeling at this particular moment DEFINITELY is not going to last 80 years. In fact, it will probably be an infitesimally small portion of it.
Figuring this out got me out of depression, I hope it helps give you a little bit of perspective as well.
On another note, it sounds like you're in a pretty bad state of mind. I'm really sorry, I've been there and it sucks. I would encourage the rest of SRL not to just be like tl;dr go an hero, and actually be sympathetic, regardless of whether you have ever experienced similar emotions or not.

Life does not hold its own purpose, meaning is created by your own conscience. Destiny is crafted by your own hands. You live your life how you want to, within reasonable bounds. You're not living how you truly want to, and you're not living in the now.
You must find what you cherish and draw upon it fully. A year ago, I spent three months living in a log cabin in a forest, isolated from all contact with humans. I found out what I really enjoy in life: control. I chose to live out there. I cut down the trees, I broke them into logs. I hunted and fed, I realized the balance there is to be found in nature. All things that live, will eventually die. But there is always purpose in life.
It rains, bringing life to the soil. Seeds absorb water and nutrients and grow. The trees grow and provide shelter. Animals eat the plants. The animals get eaten. All of these are balanced with each other. The deer to have the plants not overgrow and consume the resources. If too many plants grow, the land will become less fertile. The wolves eat the deer, keeping both the deer population from overpopulating and the flora from being completely consumed. Animals are driven by instinct, they do not dwell upon anything.
Enter people. I have almost complete control over the forest, I can choose what animals live and die. I could completely wipe out the deer in the area, forcing the wolves to adapt or migrate. I took only what I needed, and made sure to protect the life cycle, for I had responsibility that came with my power.
I came back. I miss those days, and I will return there at several points in my life. It was simple, yet complicated. Now I hold a job, go to college, have a girlfriend. I hold a lot less power, but I still have some control. I make my girlfriend happy. Will we be together for a long time? Is it true love? I don't know, I don't mind the outcome. I enjoy being able to make her happy, make her laugh. The key to happiness is in the now.
I help old ladies bring the groceries to their cars. I open doors for people, I give my seat to people and stand instead. I had to go to the bank to clear up a charge, and they couldn't help me, $20 lost, but what did I say when I left? "Have a great day." I choose to show that I have control over my emotions, my thoughts, and the influence I can spread onto people. I chose to write out this post.
You must choose your own path. Take a trip, find yourself. You might be a social, you might be a nature person, you might be a water person. Live in a big city, live on a boat house, live in the forest. Your choices craft the present and the future. If you want to be picky about not getting "a straight answer", the meaning of life is to carve your own meaning in life and live it.

There are many different views on this. To name a few:
To live is to love.
There is no point in live.
Help others as much as you can with the short time you have.
To live is to die, and to take as many with you as possible.
Have the most fun possible.
Make the world a better place.
etc.
Personally, in my opinion, there is no meaning to life. The only thing keeping me from leaving this earth is the fact that I don't really care. Hell yea, tones of things in my life are going wrong, hell yea i shed maybe a few tears reading about the one-sided love post above. Hell yea i don't even believe in a freekin hell. I don't know what to believe, and that fear of the unknown, is pretty much the whole reason why i don't want to die. It's not like I love my life, hell, i hate my life, but really, what can I do about it?
Simple as that.

We live on a planet that is all but perfect for our kind of life: not too warm and not too cold, basking in kindly sunshine, softly watered; a gently spinning, green and gold harvest-festival of a planet. Yes, and alas, there are deserts and slums; there is starvation and racking misery to be found. But take a look at the competition. Compared with most planets this is paradise, and parts of Earth are still paradise by any standards. What are the odds that a planet picked at random will have these complaisant properties? Even the most optimistic calculation will put it at less than one in a million.
Imagine a spaceship full of sleeping explorers, deep-frozen would-be colonists of some distant world. Perhaps the ship is on a forlorn mission to save the species before an unstoppable comet, like the one that killed the dinosaurs, hits the home planet. The voyagers go into the deep-freeze soberly reckoning the odds against their spaceship's ever chancing upon a planet friendly to life. If one in a million planets is suitable at best, and it takes centuries to travel from each star to the next, the spaceship is pathetically unlikely to find a tolerable, let alone safe, haven for its sleeping cargo.
But imagine that the ship's robot pilot turns out to be unthinkably lucky. After millions of years the ship does find a planet capable of sustaining life: a planet of equable temperature, bathed in warm starshine, refreshed by oxygen and water. The passengers, Rip van Winkels, wake stumbling into the light. After a million years of sleep, here is a whole new fertile globe, a lush planet of warm pastures, sparkling streams and waterfalls, a world bountiful with creatures, darting through alien green felicity. Our travellers walk entranced, stupefied, unable to believe their unaccustomed senses or their luck.
As I said, the story asks for too much luck; it would never happen. And yet, isn't it what has happened to each one of us? We have woken after hundreds of millions of years asleep, defying astronomical odds. Admittedly we didn't arrive by spaceship, we arrived by being born, and we didn't burst conscious into the world but accumulated awareness gradually through babyhood. The fact that we gradually apprehend our world, rather than suddenly discovering it, should not subtract from its wonder.
Of course I am playing tricks with the idea of luck, putting the cart before the horse. It is no accident that our kind of life finds itself on a planet whose temperature, rainfall and everything else are exactly right. If the planet were suitable for another kind of life, it is that other kind of life that would have evolved here. But we as individuals are still hugely blessed. Privileged, and not just privileged to enjoy our planet. More, we are granted the opportunity to understand why our eyes are open, and why they see what they do, in the short time before they close forever.
…
After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with colour, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again. Isn't it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it? This is how I answer when I am asked — as I surprisingly often am — why I bother to get up in the mornings. To put it the other way round, isn't it sad to go to your grave without ever wondering why you were born? Who, with such a thought, would not spring from bed, eager to resume discovering the world and rejoicing to be a part of it?

That's exactly right, there is nothing anyone can do about. Especially if they are the type that complain and moan about how bad there life is. Dervish I'm going to help you out a bit…
Do you have a house that you live in? Yes.
Do you have food on the table, or you can make whenever you want it? Yes.
You have the internet, you have a lot of stuff that other people don't have. Seriously man, get over yourself. Not trying to be a d!ck or anything, but your life can be a lot worse than what it is. So stop with the emo stuff and just live life to the fullest. Everyone has to die sometime, we all know that, so why b!tch about it. And yeah so what about love, you are going to get your heartbroken a lot more than what you think. And if you keep looking at things like you are then it's most likely going to be your fault because the girl will start thinking your not interested if you push yourself away, or you're constantly up her ass about who she is with and where she is going. It's called trust, and if you can't get over yourself and start trusting then you're going to be a lonely lonely guy. There is no point, the only thing you're doing is rambling on about stuff that we already know and have all come to live with.
Edit: Man 10 posts as I was writing that. I think too much sometimes lol

For religious people or people with a religion, life is for worshiping god and enjoying life as much as possible.
But hey I bet if you were to tell one of the million starving familys in Africa about your life, in there minds, they will know for sure yours has a lot of meaning and you are living an incredible life compared to there's. I mean seriously. 40% of Africa's population has aids…

Thanks arabian! I was waiting for some to play the "well it could be a LOT worse card" :)
So yeah, at least you have running water.
At least you aren't raped every day.
At least you aren't in solitary confinement.
At least you have access to a computer.
At least you live in a country that respects individual rights.
At least you know how to read.
At least you aren't deaf and blind.
At least you don't have terminal cancer.
At least you weren't born horribly disfigured.
The list goes on… Is your life really that bad?
Honestly sorry for the guilt trip I know this doesn't actually help at all.
Sometimes it helps to take a sick day and just jerk off. Better yet, smoke some pot, if you can't get laid, then just jerk off. Smoke more pot. Jerk off more. By the end of the day, you'll be so worn out and felt that release, you'll get over this pain.
By the way, why are you focusing on the downsides to everything? Those are the first steps to a future mental disorder. It sounds like you're depressed and we've all had those kinds of days and sometimes they last longer than days but you have got to find ways to get away from whatever pain you're feeling.
When I felt emotional trauma, I escaped my life problems by resorting to extreme gaming. It was extremely unhealthy to my interpersonal skills and when we escape we just avoid our life problems. The trick is to identify them and find out a way to solve them. Goals are what improve our lives and the possibility of a better life when those goals are completed, create motivation.
I was serious when I said to jerk off. Exercise is known to practically cure depression. So figure it out, get motivated, and get off your ass and start enjoying life. :) Wish you the best.

Life is bullshit. Your either good or bad, happy or sad, rich or poor, smart or dumb, lowlife or achiever, winner or loser, in love or lonely, hardworking or bum.. Whats the point when you only live to be judged and tested?
To make it the best damn life ever!
~Camo
I think its the judgements of other people which makes things worse more than anything else, you do not choose how you look, how you are, how you feel, you don't even choose to live !
And when bullshitters like them in my school come to annoy me because of my attitude, my look and my physical deficiencies (mainly constant light Aménie[french]), I cannot think anything but that my life sucks.
From: Alek000
Your post is somewhat like kingarabian's… Playing the "it could be so much worse" card. (who said this ? Thank you)

It depends on who you are. If you want it to be fun you can make it fun.
Kingarabian : I didn't choose who I am, how the fxck could I make my life fun when people around me do nothing but bash, judge, and push me low ?
Ignore them ? Fuck that, yes, I just said fuck, because people do nothing but say "ignore them", how would that make them stop ?! I ignore most of the insults and judgements I get, but sometimes its too much.
From: Ron
I do gaming since this happened… Yes, before I was a RuneScape fan (but thats not even a game !) but I've jumped over to more exciting and intense games, which help me escape from my problems, from the real world until its finally time to go to school again, take another beating, insults, and shed more tears.
Exercise… I could do that I guess, to a limited extent, although I do not see how it would help me.
Thanks Ron.

Don't knock it till you try it.
There is a meaning to life if you construct one. Get objectives, ambitions, goals, and in a daily basis try to do as much crazy shit as you can afford. :)
You might be going through a nervous breakdown, if so I reaaaaally suggest you get some help from a good doctor if you know one.
If you are thinking of ending it, I'll have to tell you, wait for a few years. When you get through a nervous breakdown, the first year is entirely made of candy, as you find yourself renewed.
Never stop learning. Never stop living. High school is taken too seriously by most kids : if you get beat up, just snitch to your parents and school director and everything. You'll get compassion, and maybe your parents will let you go to a kung fu/boxing/MMA class :)
I'll add you on MSN, I'm an advisor for people who like to do crazy shit and find out how to live life the way they love it.

Not a psychologist, dude, a genuine doctor. In my personal experience, psychologists just fuck you up even worse.
A doctor could look at you and say "well man you've got about six more months in the dark and then it'll all work out", or "dude you might need to see a psychiatrist about meds", etc.
On another note, if you really can't enjoy life, I suggest you act like the people who do. Dress gorgeously, work on your appearance and smile, get a job and spend money on random shit in real life stores. Have sex with a few cute chicks (or
say you have) and forge yourself a reputation of a real baller, someone who's getting the ladies, the fun and doesn't take shit from no one.
I personally am living kind of a double life : in one I am the geek yall are getting to know. In the other, I'm an enterprising college student with appetites for big cars, extreme sensation and cute women. The first one allows me to stay true while my public face allows me to have a reputation.
Reputation has a power. Use it. I used to go mad with it, and found that if you lie enough and live it out you'll get what you want by the scores, but you'll lose yourself. This is a balance that every geek or nerd needs to strike if they wish to become happy and successful.

You should try visiting a place of worship. I know you probaly think religions are a load of made up stories but they really can help people. If you try to believe in a religion you whole life will always have a purpose. I am a Muslim and I know its a strick religion but i dont pray 5 time a day. I usually pray about once a week. However, that one timea week that I do pray helps me remember my god for the rest of the week. I do go out with friends and most of them are Muslims aswel. If you go to join a religion you will be welcomed and will immediately have people to talk to whenever you want that will give you the best advise. You will also get people of the same age as you there so you can make a whole new group of friends. You can still do what you want but if you truely try to believe in your religion you wont feel like doing all the bad things. Im not sure about all the other religions im talking about Islam but im guessing all the others are similar.

Life is pointless, there is no denying that. Also the large majority of people are assholes, there's no denying that (well, at least everywhere I've been). No matter what any one tells you, there really is no concrete reason to keep on living.
There is no reason to bother to figure out why to live. No one can tell you a reason, either. You don't even need to find your own, it'll be useless.
I consider the positions of kings and rulers as that of dust motes. I observe treasures of gold and gems as so many bricks and pebbles. I look upon the finest silken robes as tattered rags. I see myriad worlds of the universe as small seeds of fruit, and the greatest lake in India as a drop of oil on my foot. I perceive the teachings of the world to be the illusion of magicians. I discern the highest conception of emancipation as a golden brocade in a dream, and view the holy path of the illuminated ones as flowers appearing in one's eyes. I see meditation as a pillar of a mountain, Nirvana as a nightmare of daytime. I look upon the judgment of right and wrong as the serpentine dance of a dragon, and the rise and fall of beliefs as but traces left by the four seasons.

Why not die early to avoid this pain ?

Hard to explain. I missed school for a few days until holidays, made me feel better, yet guilty because I know how much it costs my parents (yep, good and bad things; always together).
I laid in the dark for a few days, playing games, alot until I thought I had to change something. Isolated myself totally, except from SRL and from my mom and dad and sister. Deleted my facebook, and everything, to think.
So I started changing by getting a new haircut, making it regain its original color (brown), I bought some new clothes to change from my original dark, goth slim style, for a little bit more laid back and comfortable style.
I first didn't find it to fit me at all, but I got used to it after some time and finally went out to see an old friend from ~4 years ago and we had a chat, a coffee and a movie. He invited me to a party he'll be doing in a few days, which I'll go to… Now to find a guide on the internet on how to participate to a social event…
I think its going better, although I haven't found any good sides to life, I think I've understood something, I don't know what but it all seems lighter in my head.

Pain, sadness, stress and frustration are all states of mind. It's all about your attitude. What do you decide to see, what do you decide not to see. If you still say that there is no changing the feeling that life is sad after reading this, you are not even trying to help the situation. That would make you a quitter.
So, what do you say? Life is what you make it, agree?
http://www.wordsbykim.com/quicklinks/A-Reason-To-Live.htmlThese are actually "reasons not to commit suicide", so I picked the real "reasons to live".
3.
I want to experience all that life has to offer and there are many experiences I haven’t had yet which I want to have.8.
I believe I can find a purpose in life, a reason to live13.
I am curious about what will happen in the future22.
Life is all we have and is better than nothing27.
My family depends on me and needs me33.
I want to watch my children as they growYour death wouldn't impact this world in any way, that's true. You will most likely be forgotten after your last friend or relative dies. Although your life is practically unnecessary to this world, it doesn't mean you shouldn't keep it up. You don't really need your computer to live, do you? You don't really need your phone or clothes, but still you use them. I live for myself, for my soulmate and for my children-to-be, not for this world as a whole. Pleasure, feeling of success and joy are enough reasons to live. Everyone has something that they get pleasure from. If it's sex, go have sex. If it's drugs, go do drugs. If it's falling in love, having children and raising them well and watching them grow, then do it. The main goal for everyone should be that you can say "I did everything I ever wanted" and smile on your last bed. That's not the meaning of life, but the reason to live. There are just as many meanings to life as there are people on this world.
I had lack of belief when I was 15, I used to cry a lot. I didn't think this life is going anywhere. I didn't know my part in this world. However, now I do know my part and am very proud of it. Exactly 2 years, 1 month and 1 day ago I met the love of my life and my part is not only to make her happy, but to live a happy life with her. I don't worry what the world will be like in the future, I focus on completing my own world, reaching my own goals. Why should I care if my life is not going to help this world, as long as it gives me satisfaction and pleasure? That's enough.
And if your so stressed about life that you don't have time for school and that stresses you even more, then remember that schools are made for you, you are not made for schools. They just might help you achieve something. If you don't want any good job and you don't really need a lot of money, then forget about school. I only go to school because I really want to be a dentist, and I will be. Med. Uni entrance tests are in 6 months, wish me luck. I want to be a dentist because I know I will get satisfaction when I heal a patient and I know it's a nice job. It's all about my personal feel-good..

TL;DR : The only way to be completely true to yourself is to stay in your cave and cry at night
For one thing, I know that being completely and relentlessly true to yourself won't bring happiness, because everyone's got to pour some water in their wine if we are to live as a society. How do you think it happened that so many different styles, musical genres and ways of thoughts emerged in recent decades? Maybe the internet has a say in it, but it all starts when a community gets more loosely connected, when you spend more time online than with your real life friends. There is no way to truly fit in without giving up some of your individuality.
Moreso, once I know being myself won't help, I gotta decide whom I'll get to be. Here's a fact : Hollywood and the medias' got it all wrapped up for ya. It won't automatically make you happy to be rich and have influence over those who surround you. What will make you happy is the admiration, love and friendship that will spawn from these. When you start dressing and acting like a guy from the movies, they'll treat you like one. Choose carefully :)
Don't you know the happiness of finding a family you belong in? Haven't you ever felt like you were at the core of your IRL gang or group, with a say in every matter?
There you can get people to do with you things that you like. My personal favourites are snowboarding, urban climbing and online vidya games. During vacations, that's all that we do.
ALSO : This ain't the right thread, but I'm getting plugged on Ritalin :D any thoughts?

"we will all be forgotten." Was Hitler forgotten? No. The purpose of life is obviously to be mor elike Hitler.
Thats fucked up. I hope your joking…Cause if your not you got some serious problems.
On another note….I agree with everyone. :spot:
You can put this arguement/discussion/debate in anyway of your opinion. And your all going to be right in some way.

There is no point to life, you weren't born for a reason, nor was anyone else, in the macro view things just happen, without reason, without order. Your job is to find meaning to your life, and make what you can of it, think about it this way, whatever position you're in, there's always going to be someone worse of than you, be thankful that you aren't in their position, and I doubt that person is killing themselves, so have some courage, and find a way to at least survive through it, because things change with time, you don't know what the future has to bring you, you can't say all there's left to your life is pain, because no one knows that, no one can predict that. Everybody faces problems in life, what you should do is never give up and always keep thinking about the positives, and search for solutions and build yourself a better life. That's my opinion, hope it shed some light on the matter for you.

I am sorry, but he wont be forgotten, ever. For the cruel things he did. But for this whole arguement/debate thing, i agree with you.
It just makes me angry that someone would even think of something like this.

You should see, when something more terrible happens, and news will stop picking up these old related facts such as hitler, he will be forgotten.

That wasn't very nice, you may be sick of my whining, but you don't have to read threads about it then, nor post back.

Sorry but I have to say this:
Your life has alot more meaning then the people living in the middle east or africa. Goodness. In Isreal I've seen a girl whose whole family got killed and shes only 9. I've seen a girl witness her dads death infront of her. I've seen nearly 1000 destroyed homes that were destroyed while people were living in them. I know there are ALOT of people starving and that are being oppressed. I've seen people eat insects for food. Yet they dont say "there is no meaning to life". Imagine how THEY feel.
ALOT of people are living extremely worse then you. Face it, if your getting picked on or something then learn some martial arts, lift weights etc etc. If your parents hate you then seek some local help.
There maybe no meaning to life to YOU, but I've seen a 50 piece Knife set at Sears on sale if theres one located near you. Buy it, and start cutting yourself.

Needs more of this, althought things are very different on this side of the world. We're having it easy in the west.
I'm not downplaying anything of your arguments; people out there have it way harder than most westerners could ever imagine. But while most of us in the west can feed and drink and play, what we also have in gigantic ammounts is loneliness. Crippling, paralyzing, colder-than-cold loneliness.
My hometown of Montreal has one of the highest suicide rates of the world. came summer 2009, a surgeon killed his two daughters and wife before committing suicide. We saw Mark Lépine and Kim Veergill.
When I walk on the streets of the town where I live, those who I don't know either shoot wary looks at me; else, they'll just not cross my eyes. those I do know look at everyone else that way. I've seen a mother with her kids change sidewalks because she didn't want to cross me.
People here get sick with overwork, drug and alcohol addiction, obesity and gambling. Besides my girlfriend and family, it's been about a week since I talked to another human being face to face.
I dream of a world where people smile back at you, where you can say "It's difficult right now in my life" without being called a faggot or without being pointed that others have it equally rough.
I think it's our generation that is supposed to build that world.

Hello again, I just want to post an apology to Dervish, what I said the other day was not required, and I did not gain anything from it, it was a spur of the moment thing and I am sorry.
Even though most of the community will not know me as I'm mostly active on IRC, my actions the other day will have succeeded in gaining me a stereotype, and not a good one indeed.
Although, I am not just apologising to ensure a rightful amount of respect, but I am indeed sorry.
