If you pirate, why do you do it?

This is my main reason why I sometimes pirate. Those DVD restrictions are a pain in the ass, especially if you watch a lot of foreign shows.

Because i cannot afford the software.
I recently got a paper rout and im planning on donating the software's prices.
as for movies, i use watch-movie-links, not piracy or if its good enough i can buy it.
Games i just borrow from friends and download to my comp

It's always different for me. Whenever I discover a new band.movie I like (from friends/youtube/tv/anything) I just go torrent it, it always varies.

anyway, I probably dl a gig a week on average. I don't torrent though, that'll get ya kicked off the university's network right quick like.

Well I dont have that kind of money to pay 50 dollars for each new game. If you had a choice to get something free wouldnt you take it? Its not like the company's are going poor off of us.

I usually just go with a "try before you buy" policy, but sometimes I have solid reasoning. I rented Bruce Almighty to see with my gal, disc was scratched up so bad that it froze every few minutes for several minutes! So I grabbed a DVDRip and we watched that.
And then there's certain programs that cost $300-900 (unless you're a student and get some special discount.)

Harry, you can buy DVD players that support ALL regions.
Anyway, I pirate because it is cheaper and it saves time (I mean why drive 15 minutes to the shops to buy a cd for $20-$30 then drive another 15 minutes back) When I only have to click download, wait around 5-10 minutes and I can listen to it.

I torrent all the time on my university network no problem.
I think I pirate because it is a lot easier to feel like you aren't doing something wrong when you're so physically (and in some ways mentally or emotionally) far removed from whatever/whoever you're stealing from. It's so convenient to just pirate stuff instead of paying for it because you don't (or at least I don't) feel all that guilty about it. Kind of sad really.

I don't have the money. Plain and simple XD
I don't try to justify my actions - obviously, they are wrong. But I like to think that I wouldn't spend the money for the game anyways, so the companies are not losing any sales.

If you set it to a low dl rate you should be fine. How could they detect it unless you're downloading like 5MB/s?

By what port its going through, so I guess make it port 80 put a low limit
Brain

the dl rate on the campus network is 2kb/s max with torrents, until you get caught, then you get a warning letter, then kicked off the network, and I work for the school, and give out letters saying what people were torrenting, when, and what ethernet port/wireless ID. It's really….awkward to deliver a letter that says they were downloading "anal butt sluts 9 cum drenched hookers *insert more expletives here*", cuz we are supposed to say the title of w/e they downloaded for some reason….but it's funny see the look on their face.
E: of course some people don't get caught, and I don't know how they don't or I don't know what people are doing to get caught, all I know is people do get caught, and from when I used to try to torrent, it was horrendously slow.

Yeah most colleges in the US dont want to you torrent, and easily know when you do.
UC berkeley has its own secret server or something that all kids put stuff onto/torrent stuff off of, its ridiculously fast too, my friend torrented an album in 2 seconds. But yeah Megaupload + JDownloader can get you just about anything too, sometimes even faster than torrents.

Like a lot of people I don't have the money to go out and buy everything that I want. It's easy, and really simple to do a quick search for a program I want, or a movie I want to watch and make a few clicks to get it.

Because
a) I don't feel like supporting movie companies when they produce "LOLOL ACTION" and shit
b) I don't feel like supporting record labels knowing that the bands will barely ever see anything from that money.
c) Fuck current gen games most are junk with the odd rare good one. Im looking at you EA (who has been getting better I guess you could say)

I rarely ever pirate. But when I do, it's for an extremely good reason. And if I get enough money (in an electronic pay (like PayPal, etc), which isn't actually from my own money, but from online click-cash thingos :p) to actually buy the software, then I would ;)

I will definitely pay for something if I can. Sometimes I just get angry at the corporate giants bleeding their customers dry. If I ever do, it is for software that other people need and/or I will share… I like having the discs on hand, so mainly I look for the no disc cracks and whatnot… Honestly, I would say 80% of my torrenting is for a friend. He has horrible internet at his house and if he is willing to email me the torrent file, I will usually get it for him. I don't mind. ~ I prefer purchased stuff though. I will buy something if it is worth it. I am willing to support people/companies that produce a good product at a reasonable price that is useful or fun.
I've got Usenet and download LOADS and LOADS of games/movies/music with a 2mb/s rate.. I'm pretty screwed once those bastards find out :P. Not scared though.

Its called a DC++ server, a *lot* of universities have them. We only share ``legal'' stuff on it though. And, its hosted out of a kids room. :)
I torrent TV shows which are public domain anyways. As long as you aren't profiting.
Oh, and I don't torrent software. FOSS is usually better anyways.
