For RAM I suggest higher end Corsair. I use Corsair and I love it.

I've had good luck with cheap OCZ RAM in 3 desktops and 1 laptop.
Can't beat the mail in rebates they always have, dunno if it applies you aussies.
seriously 12gb ram….?

Dont bother getting that expensive graphics card, the motherboard already has a GPU on it. Use the money to buy a better CPU/motherboard.
I suggest you get the HDMI asus motherboard with an AMD quad core
I doubt getting 12gb ram is worth it, but the motherboard has 4 slots so you could maybe get 4x2gb ram sticks (with a 64 bit operating system of course)

I can understand why people buy good graphics cards but to spend 1000 dollars on one? That's a bit much don't ya recon?

What's your budget? It sounds like you're going to spend 3k+ on this..
12gb RAM is so unnecessary, it can't be good for the computer to be running "1000" processes constantly.
Also you should note that MSY is always low/out of stock so don't expect to get everything you want on the day unless you call up and reserve or something.

12GB ram is overkill. I have 4gb, and I can do everything I'd want…unless youre planning on running 100000x SMARTS (if youre thinking what im thinking youre thinking then dont….) also $1000 on a gfx card is overkill as well.
Its fun to say you have a good computer, but the fact is that unless youre doing full on complex simulations of astrophysics/physics/chemistry etc theres absolutely no need - theres no other software that needs that much. Better to wait a few years until you might need to upgrade, when its alot cheaper.

4 - 6GB of RAM is ideal. I wouldnt go for 12GB cause its not gonna be used.
Even with that much difference your not gonna see any performance increases. Maybe a very small % increase which your not gonna notice. Even with encoding etc your not gonna see anything.
CPU you gotta think dual or quad.
You dont need watercooling, get a good thermal paste and a kick ass cooler and your sorted. (Artic Freezer etc). Even if you do overclock to the extreme then you can always add more fans to the case etc…
I wouldnt pay that much for a gfx card, simply because after a short few months there will be a better one. Pay around $400, something like a 9800GTS or something.
Depends what you wanna do with the computer. A gaming rig will be totally different to a productive computer like 3d design, modeling, encoding etc..

Hrm, i wouldn't say that 8 gigs is a must either. My friend built a middle-end gaming PC last year (runs L4D, tf2, WoW) for $450 off of 2gb of ram (he's got a 3.00 ghz processor and an ati radeon 4350). It runs smoothly even with more pragmatic specs, but of course, he doesn't run Crysis at max settings or have the coolest looking case. It just really boils down to what type of gaming you're going after.
Just be careful about the amount of money you spend. Technology is always updating, so what's current now might not be current tomorrow.
edit: ops, sorry i meant hd radeon 4350, not 4650 >_<

2 GB Ram
GeForce 9500 GT
Gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2 MB

GeForce 9600 GT is awesome, I have it on my laptop and I am truly pleased with it! None of my games lags at the best quality settings :)
2GB ram… I would say 4GB
2Cored is good, quad isn't worth it yet

More than 4 gigs of ram is uneeded, same with ddr3. You don't need more than a 1gig gfx card tbh. And i7 is uneeded right now. Go quad core.

i7 is quadcore. i7 mobo's use triple channel memory. i7 mobo's use DDR3, DDR3 is needed because the prices are now competitive with DDR2 and there is no reason to buy similarly priced hardware when one is better.
I would pick up a 5850, drop your 1000w down to a 600w or so, get a cheaper mobo (seriously, why are you spending that much on a mobo?) and would buy a SSD.
Edit: Also yes, it would be in his best interest to buy a GPU with more than 1 gig GDDR5 since he wants to use a 30" monitor
Second edit: You won't need the expensive mobo or RAM unless you plan to overclock a lot, but judging by your lack of aftermarket cooling I suspect not?

Right, I didn't note the 30" monitor, but still i7s are overkill. And I guess if your building a expensive computer to begin with, you might as well get DDR3 for its small boost in speed.

DDR3 is pretty much equal to DDR2 prices now so I fail to see how expense comes into it. And no, i7's are not overkill if you have a beefy GPU that needs to be fed information.

My Super l33t one im getting allows me to play games in like super quality..
but if i get a inbuilt one i cant even play most modern day good games…

Integrated GPU's are pretty good now-a-days as long as you buy the right mobo. But yeah, you won't be playing in any respectable resolution and it probably is pushing it for a 30" monitor.

SSD are too expensive right now in my opinion. But thanks to the shift in market towards them, HDDs are becoming dirt cheap I guess.

I'm thinking GFX Card then the HDDs, then the MB, Ram, CPU, etc.

I would go: GFX, MB, RAM, CPU, HDD.
I'm going to assume your CPU and RAM don't work with your current motherboard. You can make use of the graphics card right off the bat. You might want the hard drives earlier, depends on how long the wait between parts is, and how much you need the extra space.

Over how long of a period? If you say between two pay checks (over a month) thats fine, but any longer and I would say just save up your money to buy all your parts. Don't bother buying part by part.
And yes, SSD's are expensive but when you build a computer that has a 5870, a i7-920, DDR3 high speed ram, a good mobo … conventional hard drive disks are what bottleneck you. They are not worth it if you aren't building an enthusiast system though.

2009-12-07 23:51:06
They aren't a bottleneck because most information is cached to RAM. If you are dealing with a large amount of information that is not cached, likely you won't notice the difference.

Yes, hard drives are the bottleneck. It is the slowest piece of hardware in your computer if it is a hard drive disk. And yes, upgrading to a SSD is noticeable. After you have a i7 and a 5870, there really isn't any reason to buy more RAM or another GPU and any extra money spent is better off towards a SSD. Nothing else will make such an improvement to not only load times in games but everyday computing.
R0b0t1
2009-12-09 21:32:24
No, extra money spent is best towards something else while you wait for SSDs to go down. Hard drives are technically a bottleneck, but practically aren't, unless your sole use for your computer is moving large files.
Knowing how cheap USB flash drives are now, would you buy an SSD knowing it will decrease in price by more than 300%?

Haha funny funny, do you have any idea why flash drives are cheap? It has nothing to do with how much storage it has. It has everything to do with the quality of the parts used in the usb flash drives. You honestly think they are using 50 cent memory controllers for SSD's?
And if someone doesn't want a SSD, they are better off not spending any extra money. Lucid's Hydra isn't out so you lose a lot from installing a second GPU (and I am not even sure Hydra will be all its cracked up to be), you cannot really install a second CPU (unless you have a server mobo, but then you most likely won't be asking for advice either), you don't need more than 4 or 6gb of ram (depending if your mobo is triple channel or double).
I mean unless you want to spend 100% of the price for a new GPU for only 5-20% performance boosts, then go ahead. But I do agree, SSD's at the moment are only for enthusiasts or low capacity ones for laptops.
