Networking

Lazarus does not provide a 'standard' networking set, there are several ones available on the interwebs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazarus_%28software%29#Limitations

Indy (the one used in delphi as well) seems to be the most complete one.. However it's a huge package, which results in long compile times + bigger executables.

Synapse is quite compact, yes has most of the functions we need: http://synapse.ararat.cz/doc/help/httpsend.html

LNet is a 'Lightweight networking library', it looks a bit more like Indy and is actively under development.

Any advice?

I'm not really knowledgeable on the subject, but if Indy is massive and has an excessive amount of files, isn't it a bit over doing it to keep that?

If that is the cause, go with synapse IMO.

What do we need, besides TCP/IP sockets and HTTP maybe?
I guess nothing :)
Anything wrong with LNet? As it seems like a fine component to me.

I think I'm in favor of using LNet, seems nice all around.

Hmm, how do you want to use FTP?
Nothing against it ofcourse, but right now no one seems to be using it/needing it.
Of course, an IRC implementation is very important.

FTP might come in handy for updating.

IRC.. afaik only Indy has implementations of this protocol..

Implementing IRC can be done by us though - I don't think getting Indy simply for IRC support would be a good idea.
Anyway, can they not be compiled to additional libraries that can be used? It would give the scripter the possibility to go with Indy or another one if they wanted or the like as well as meaning minimal compile times since they would be pre-compiled generally or much less frequently need updating.

You know, you could just like, call socket()…

And waste hours.

1. non-blocking sockets
2. ssl

ssl could be used for connecting to smtp servers and sending email progress reports!

Blocking sockets are also quite nice for the occasional project.

Problem with non-blocking sockets is that they are kinda hard to export to PascalScript in a 'non-blocking way'.

They're defined in a C library, ahem.
