What causes the temperature to decrease with altitude (height) through the mesosphere?
Why is it necessary to use special instruments to measure the temperature of the atmosphere in the thermo sphere layer?
Thanks :)

Cmon man, at least use Google First:

First, the atmosphere is mainly heated from the ground, rather than by the sun directly. Second, as the pressure of a gas decreases, so does its temperature. Thus, as the warmed air near the surface becomes less dense and begins to rise, it expands and cools.

Special instruments must be used because temperature is a measure of how fast particles move, the faster the particles, the higher the temperature. There are very few particles in the Thermosphere, however, so not enough particles would strike a thermometer to heat it.

The air cannot hold the heat to well

Not sure, sorry. Guessing so it is an accurate measurement?
