Regarding Jr Scripting Competition

I am assuming that I can do this as I see no reason why not. By reading this topic you swear yourself to secrecy for the next few days or so until I publicly post the competition. If you are proven to have leaked anything, you will have to cut off your testicle and eat them while filming and upload to youtube (or if it's Bebe, then I shall forgive you since I don't think the above would work).

Anyway, onto the actual post!
My idea was that this competition would centre around include development - entrants are required to submit either rewritten or new procedures aimed at the SRL include. The emphasis will be on creating new procedures, specifically for areas that the include lacks support in, ie opening the world map, toggling options there and searching the map using the box at the bottom as well as some of the emptier skill files.

That is the core of the competition and will remain relatively unchanged. However, I am still deciding on most other areas as this isn't identical to other, previous scripting competitions.

In regards to rules, so far I have these based on the standard competition rules:
Own work;
Must be submitted by deadline;
No reflection;
One entry;
Applicable to RS;

These are pretty self explanatory with the only difference from the standard rules being in "Own work" - I am thinking that since it will also allow rewriting of include, it will need some rewording. Similarly, I am thinking it may need to be modified to allow for including publicly posted things that are crucial to it working, for example a "walk to nearest bank" that used an algorithm or adapted algorithm posted by person x. To overcome this second problem, I am thinking that they just have to state their use of it and then it isn't used as part of the judging.

On top of that, I am thinking of one other addition with that being since it should create a range of new features for SRL, once the deadline passes all entries will be combined, stripped of names then sent to the Devs and they can just go through them and if they wish to can add them. For every procedure that is directly added to the include, the author gets an extra 20 points, for every procedure that is modified then added gets 10 points and for any procedure that is pretty much completely rewritten but still uses the original idea gets 5 points. These values are of course up for debate.

In regards to judging, it is similar to rules in that most but not all are inherited:
(Per entrant, ie overall)
Individuality - 50;
Adherence to SRL rules - 100;
Presentation - 50;
(Per procedure then averaged)
Technique - 100;
Creativity - 150;
Efficiency - 150;

They should hold the same method of being awarded to previous competitions, except that I am thinking of changing efficiency to efficiency & simplicity. One of the core things regarding SRL is that it doesn't overcomplicate things just to look good. I do think that simplicity could also fall under technique though, but it seems to fit in better with efficiency, primarily because the phrase is "simple yet efficient".

One main point of discussion is whether or not they should be limited to free procedures or members too. I am leaning towards free only as I don't have a member account people could use to ensure it works consistently, but possibly someone here has one they would be willing to test on or a judge will.

Talking about judges, I am still looking for people who are interested in judging. If you are, pm me and I shall take it from there.

I am hoping for feedback as I do want to make the competition as awesome as can be and anything that could use clarification or the like is welcomed too :)

worry about the judges later, a lot will change until the deadline ;)

I'm not sure I understand entirely what the goal for the competition is going to be. Is each user just going to try to make a bunch of functions that hopefully will be added to the include?

We already talked about judging on IRC, so I guess you've got me on that "shortlist" you're making. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

i tellded you my thoughts.

I'm not too worried about getting all judges now - my shortlist of pm's was regarding people who specifically mentioned and so I just wanted to confirm they would still be interested with me at the helm and then also the old judges as you had such high praise for them :) I'm going to be pm'ing them closer to the deadline to get them 100% confirmed as such, but until then I would like to think I have more than enough possible judges to cope even with a swine flu pandemic here.

Regarding the goal, yes. The main goal is to produce procedures to be added to the include. Somewhat discussions with Nava made me realise I forgot to add the limits to the amount submitted - I was thinking minimum of 3 functions and maximum of 10. Unsure if I should add bonus points or not per extra function from 3 - at the moment leading towards not as I would prefer 10 people submit a total of 30 high quality functions rather than 10 people submitting a total of 100 crappy ones.

They're junior members… do remember that their 'high quality' and your 'high quality' do not match…

I know, but you can tell the difference between a handful of functions they spent time on and a handful they just made to try and get more points :)

Narcle

2009-10-25 19:37:02

If this is for functions - "Simple yet Effective" should be the highest point standard. Since its just for functions then this would take presidence.
I also suggest Stability/Reliability for this competiton as well, as you don't want a false reading function. It could fall under technique but I think its too far off base to make sense, if you know what I mean.

mixster

With both points I do agree. Hmm.. lower amount for creativity to 100 then slot in reliability (100) as a new thingy makes sense indeed. The only problem I can foresee is testing reliability for specific areas in a non-botlike manner (ie testing someones open world map without running it a hundred times).

Are you worried about a ban etc. then when testing? If so I have like 40+ dormant accounts that you could use if that is the problem. You could probably do all the testing on one before a ban occurs on it. Though I think the more annoying thing is if you do indeed test it 100 times - that will take time. You could always do a smaller count of 20-25 tests instead and use that as a base test number, however it would lower the extensiveness of the test. (not the exact word i'm looking for but ya…)

mixster

2009-10-25 21:12:50

The banning for myself isn't really an issue, but it may be for the judges. Establishing how reliable it is is an important part, so a magic number needs to be devised - I still think 20-25 may be a bit high, maybe 10 then if any problems come up further 10 done to see if it comes up again or if it was a just a random one with extra looking at the codes to ensure.

Idea is very different and I like it, make SRL better woo!
But I dont think JR members are knowledgeable enough to make anything too great/amazing/worth SRL. I think a competition for SRL MEMBERS like this would be way more effective and useful. IMO just make them make a regular ol script.

Sorry for the basing of the Jr. Members, but you guys get what I mean?

Yeah I agree on that. Improving SRL would be better for SRL Members. Would get to see more advance functions that way.

However, I would like to see this competition either way.

Yohojo, u said u wanted to run a competition, Nava said he was willing to judge, perhaps Narcle is as well, get on for the SRL Members. Obviously not mixster's idea, but it has been long since members have competed for a script ;)

Well, if you guys want, I could delay it, team up with YoHoJo and run it as a dual-competition with myself in charge of selecting Jr judges and YoHoJo Member judges then we produce the rules etc together. Also, EvilChicken! has said he would judge for me, so I see no reason why not for a Member one (I could be wrong though, maybe he just loves me more) :)

I love you too… :(

I'm willing to judge both actually… I don't have the capacity to test at this point, but I can do the rest of it quite easily.

I love you too Nava2! Was kind of waiting to see if YoHoJo would reply to my above question, but now I shall have to prod him as I am fairly happy with the setup for the competition.

Eventually, he WILL respond.. but we all know he is lazy. You could abuse the report button and report the post addressing it to YoHoJo. ;)

i lol'd at the PM.
So im still lost. You want to run yours, and you also want me to run a members competition at the same time? Or what? Sorry could you explain it all better please! :p HeeHee, your prod tickled.
@Mixster, MSN me pl0x?

mixster

2009-10-28 16:47:50

I don't use silly MSN, but I do IRC :)
Anyway, the idea is that there are the same competition rules and everything, but the entrants are split into Members and Jr Members if that makes a bit more sense. Once it has finished, you then handle choosing judges for marking the members scripts and myself handle Juniors or something like that.

YoHoJo

2009-10-28 16:54:22

<YoHoJo> You want: Everyone make funcs, i judge members, you judge jrs?
<mixster> that's what I'm offering
<YoHoJo> KKK
<YoHoJo> Acept
<YoHoJo> Accept
<mixster> ^_^
<mixster> So regarding that, I think RM would just need some kind of confirmation

CONFIRMED

2009-10-29 05:37:06

Yes, yes, go ahead and make your threads :)
Making a seperate one for Members+ and one for Juniors might be a good idea. Other than that, go ahead, i'll set you guys up with the forums a couple weeks into the competition;

I'll also grant mixster access to the first forums so he can have a look around at how it was done.

If you want any RS-related prizes, give hobbit a PM, he might have some pins. Forum related prizes will be Competition cup(for all) and SRL Membership(for juniors).

Other than that, feel free to run the competition, you know where to find me if you need any help/advice :)

I can be done and given out if deserving but I strongly disagree with putting it up as a prize. However, you could hint at it ;) However I don't want anything that officially actually says they'll get it if they're the runner up.

Some just won't really deserve it.

There has also been talk of another use for that cup.. so.. yeah. :)

I understand no guarantees, but hint at least is good. Would it maybe be better to mention more like submitted entries may also gain aristo-cats cup as a little sideline?

Also, will start up the competition tomorrow/later today - I would do so now, but just want to make sure I'm online for a while after starting it in case I screwed up or the like. Regarding the competition being run for Members as well, I am unsure of that state. I will assume that it will be run, but won't mention it in the Jr comp thread and instead leave it up to YoHoJo (or maybe JAD since he mentioned something to that effect but I am unsure to which) to handle that side. I will try to get some confirmation before I do start the Jr comp though.
