Calculate the number of Sulfate ions in 1.50 moles of Na2SO4.

I thought it was Mol Na2SO4 -> Mol SO4 -> FU SO4 -> ion SO4, (FU = Formula Units) but either my equivalencies were wrong or that path is wrong :cartman: Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: I don't want just the answer, as that doesn't help me learn, so an explanation would be nice if possible :)

Well basically, if you have 1.5 mol of Na2SO4, you will have 1.5 mol of SO4 since there is one ion of SO4 per every molecule.

In having 1.5 mol of SO4, you would simply multiply it by Avagadro's # (6.022*10^23) or whatever it is, and you would have the number of atoms/ions/fu's that it is.

I haven't done this in two years, so it might not be right. It seems pretty simple though.

Formula units are pretty much the same as saying "Atoms" but I think it's more like saying "Parts of the molecule" or something. I don't remember the exact definition. Its the same as saying "How many atoms" or "How many molecules" only for a part of a molecule, IIRC.

Like I said, I haven't done this in two years, so I can't really say for sure, but thats what I remember.

So Number of Sulfate Ions in 1.5moles of Na2SO4 would be 1.5 mols!

Basically in 1 molecule Sodium Sulfate.
There is 2 molecule of Sodium (Na2) and 1 Molecule of Sulfate (SO4)

Note SULFATE is composed of 1 sulfur and 4 oxygen.

Mole is a unit of measurement, but its a 'Count Unit" , like 1 car, 1 passenger.
Think of this,
Ignore the "mole"
in 1 Sodium Sulfate, there is 2 Sodium and 1 Sulfate.
So in 1.5 Sodium sulfate, there is (2x1.5) 3 Sodium and (1x1.5) 1.5 sulfate.

Its like saying, in a car that has 2 passenger.
If you have 1.5 cars, you have (2x1.5) 3 passenger.

Yeah I understand now. The terminology was confusing me; After a bit of reading in my book I've concluded that, in this situation, you treat Formula Units as Molecules and ions as Atoms.
