New Section?

I was thinking maybe add a homework section somewhere on the forums? Where post count is disabled, i'm sure PLENTY of people would want to help, for one thread i got like 5 pms :).

It would not only help me, im sure plent of people would use it. Maybe some specific moderators for that forum, idk its a suggestion, i would 100 % love it
(get it, 100%, math? eh, i tryed :))

edit, maybe even seperate forums inside the main homework forums for like 4 subjects,

English, social studies ( global ), math , science ( of course earth science, biology would go under science, algebra would be in math etc.)

ps: i would be more confident about doing homework, cause usually, i give up on math homework within 5minutes cause its impossible, ask any one who helped me tonight, barely got the easiest shit >.>

+ for english, you can post essays , for like 10 more sets of eyes to be reading your essay before ur teacher does!

+ 7 yes
0 no

I'd be very willing to help moderate the math section. I tutor kids IRL, and I love teaching maths :) I can also help with sciences, I am planning on going into a science dual-major and I just understand it really well.

I support this idea!
(Especially if there's a social studies section, I suck at history :p)

Also, you can post as much as you want cause post count doesnt count. So you can basically have a quick pased convo, like guy who needs help asks, then the helper says, well u do this, and try this too while ur at it, etc.

Its a really good idea. I have to write essays for english all the time. I would like some proof reading and such. If people are good at essays, they could really help out. I'm pretty good at them I guess, for a grade 12 student, so I could probably help people. I have a 95% average all around, so I guess I could help everyone.

Why can't people who want homework help just use the General Help section? It's not like there is an extreme amount of new threads being made every day that help needs yet another sub forum.

i could occasionally help people out. first year engineering ftw
edit: just dont ask me chem…i HATE chem. not that im horrible in it. i just get bored with it :P

This is true.

BUT, I think that more people will ask for help if there is a specific place to do so.

Especially if there's a section for essay reviews and such. I think that would be extremely useful for a vast number of the SRL community, (Seeing as most of the members here are younger than 18).

EDIT: Things such as help with homework shouldn't be associated with post count anyways.

So who can make the homework section?

Nava2

Cool story, bro.

Falls on execution. I don't think there is the interest like you say.

I just think it will add clutter.

Maybe a subforum in General News, but nothing more. Definitely use Tags btw.

I dont understand what you mean in the bold.

Your saying you wont add it anywhere but a subforum of general news? Why general news, make a home work section with tons of TAGS as a subforum to like general dump :)

Psst: Everyone who posted but 1, liked it. ??

noidea

2009-10-13 22:23:51

No. There are not enough threads related to home work help to make its own forum.
Just make a thread in the help section or something? There are like 1 thread every month or so..

There are not enough threads because there is no specific forum for it! :)

If there was a forum , there would be more threads, haven't you read this thread? lol. We should at least try it out, if it fails over the first month, then. Kill it?

Sections, do you mean subforum?

We dont really need any sub forums :)

Just like 10 tags that show what help you need will work too. :p

If some one were too add it, who would the guy be? Like could a mod do it, or would it have to be an admin, or can a SRL Dev do it?

Main

2009-10-14 07:04:22

We can just have them as topics.
If we wanna be organized, we'll make a subsection.
But TBH.
I think we just need one section for them to post the question, and let there be taggs.
Like
Question Type:
[Chemistry][Math][English]…etc
and then solve or not solved
[Solved][Not Solved]

Example

[Not Solved][Chemistry]
How do you electroplate iron nail with coppper?

and after they are done, we'll make that forum doesn't erase older posts, so they can be archived

Ok ,so does anybody mind making a Sub forum in general help for Homework, and withing home work will be nothing but Tags for

Math(algebra , + all other math stuff)
English
Social Studies(history, global)
Science(biology, earth science, etc)
LoTe(Language other than english, spanish, french etc)
Solved

The best people to ask are those doing the same course as you. If you don't have enough in real life friends that at least one of them is on at most times, then it is time to put down SRL, go make some more and bug them with questions.
Asking random people will only really help on maths and maybe sciences as they are some what universal.
Other languages are either quite rare or would be better suited to one on one rather than group discussion.
Things like geography and history often vary depending on schools, let alone countries, so it seems silly for them to even be considered.

Overall though, people doing the same course know more about it than most people here and you know them better, so ask them!

Main

2009-10-14 18:23:14

But still, if we had like a essay, it'd be alot better for a shit load of people read it, then give feed back.

Also, online is more accessible, and lots of people IRL don't like to be bothered.

mixster

2009-10-15 02:57:04

If it's an essay, then I would say it's too important to get random people to read. By all means, if you feel you need a lot of people to view it, then you can share with people over msn etc. but putting it on the forums will just mean random people will just go "nice" or "well done" even if they don't mean it. You can't trust people you don't know well to be honest nor can you trust them to have any kind of knowledge on the subject area.

Regarding irl, make it a two way system. Anyone is annoyed if you keep asking them the same questions without learning from them. I doubt they would have a problem as long as you are willing and able. I'm sure you feel the same way. For things like reading essays, offer to read theirs too. The funny thing about friends is that they usually do like to help you. If they don't, they're not friends.
