Reputation

Quite frankly, I am growing increasingly annoyed by the fact that everyone is asking for free reputation points, and is also handing out reputation points for no particular reason. I've just handed out five warnings and three infractions (that will not expire) to those asking for reputation, and those handing out free reputation.
Please remember that I (and some other Staff members) can see all the reputation handed out. From now on I will try to examine who hands out reputation, and for what reason. If it is not a valid reason, you may just find your reputation being reset; plus an infraction in your Inbox
~Wizz
E: I will not look at reputation logs before this date.
E2:
Also, in my opinion it is fine to derep anyone asking for reputation. (Anyone who does so after this date).
I may come back on that later, though. :p
E3: Any admin wanting to help look through the reputation logs and doesn't have the power to do so, pm me.

I never advocated the (+1 rep indicator) threads, nor would I ever make one, (I may have posted in a few though….). But I am very guilty of giving random reps all the time. Now it is explicitly against the rules, so you all will have to earn reps from me for now and in the future.

There is difference between loving a post or opinion some has, and to love just for sake of repping. It kind of mocks up the system.

I didn't say repping people hurts anything. All of the celebration threads and spamming reps does though. Why have an extra feature if there is no point to it?
Does anyone remember the days when nobody cared about rep? I remember for the first two years of being here, I don't remember any person having more than one rep box.

It really does dishearten me when I see people have more rep than me simply because they ask for it where as I do not. I truly have put a lot of time into the forum and especially in the past a lot of that time directly went into helping people to the best of my ability.

I actually pretty much concur with this.
I had 30 reps or something not that long ago, started getting lots of random reps. I'd much rather have 30 earned reps than 101 reps. Reset me? :\

Actually, two reputation boxes are cached. So they won't take extra reloading, only extra rendering.

Random reputation never hurts anyone, and might actually make them a little happy…
Since it has no purpose in these forums, why should it be against the rules ?
Well I'm getting suspended for my random reputation givings I think… Since I did not know it was against the rules to do so…
You shouldn't be banned for doing something which you do not know is against the rules before it is officially announced being against them… Well that is my point of view.

Same together with the fact you did it and made me happy each time I got your reputation spam; I decided to try it out a little.
However, when you give reputation to someone, it says something about getting the reputation back. Well would that be against the rules like :
Rep : "Back repped you <3 ~Name" ?
Since it has always said to be of no use, which apparently is not true, we thought it was a fun thing to do, a kind thing to do.

A Grades have purpose, reputation does not. Well we thought it since you were saying it all the time, then I read this thread and
apparently it does.
Following up what R1ch has said : people have posted password stealing scripts to do no good and only for personal gain and hurting others,
knowing it was against the rules. Yet, they get banned, and unbanned, frozen to Jr Members for some and others just get away with it.
We rep people maybe to be kind and maybe establish a friendship between us; in other words to do good,
not knowing it was against the rules.
Fair right ? :p

Erm, you guys ignored my edit - I believe it was the admins decision as it is better to know who they are rather than have them return under aliases only with the same situation arising again.
Likewise, it should be common sense that you only rep people when you think they have a good post. Would you go up to random people in the street and say "Well done!"? If you would, then it may be that you shouldn't be allowed to rep.
If you think rep is the only way to get to know someone new, you could, kind of, try talking to them? Send a pm or a reply in the topic.

I don't think it disables rep, it just hides it. You can still rep people with the single gray square (I think, I didn't try as I want to avoid an infraction….but it lets me start to rep wizzup?, and his is not shown)
You can un-show your own rep by going to User CP > Edit Options, but as far as I know, it's not technically disabled.
