Don't get your hopes up. I tried for like an hour to get a cool name. there all taken, even if you put spaces dashes l's for i's

and so many people are trying to access it that its difficult to actually get onto the page :P

They probably gave the accounts a permanent ID or String so they take track of it and the game reads it as "ID" then it shows the screenname.
Just some speculation.

When you change your display name, an icon will appear next to it on your friends’ Friends Lists. This will inform your friends that you have just changed your name and, by hovering their mouse cursor over that icon, they will see what your previous display name was.

Not a bad idea but still a pain in the butt
