Only music you can actually 'dance' to is gangster rap though unfortunately.
What exactly is this event gonna be like?

Well, the "a lot of people will know about" pretty much eliminates most of the stuff I'd usually recommend. Anyway, let's see, I do have some recommendations still.
Harder to Breathe - Maroon 5
Viva la Vida - Coldplay
21 Guns - Greenday
The Pretender - Foo Fighters
Crawling in the Dark - Hoobastank
Inside of You - Hoobastank

I DJ IN A BAR so I might help you (hai guise) :D
You got a pretty good selection of rock so far. finger eleven, coldplay, etc. I'd add something by Kid Rock, ESPECIALLY that "all summer long" song, even if it's old.
May I suggest a few songs?
David Rush (Young Buck) feat Pitbull & Kevin Rudolph - Shooting Star (LMFAO remix)
If vulgarity is not an issue you can put Shots by LMFAO feat. Lil Jon.
Daft Punk is cool : Da Funk, Harder Better Faster Stronger and One More Time !
The following are NEEDED at any dance:
Kid Cudi - Day n Night (Crookers Remix)
David Guetta feat. Akon - Sexy Bitch
Cascada - Evacuate the dancefloor
Space Cowboys - Good girls go bad
Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling or Boom Boom Pow
Sean Kingston - Fire Burning (maybe Pitbull RMX)
The following are Grade-B, meaning less-than-godly, or not that well known but still groovy. You may or may not play them, but it'll always be good for dancing.
Ian Carey Project - Get Shaky
Shakira - She Wolf
R.I.O. - Shine On
Shaggy - Feel The Rush
Depending on your location and tastes, it might be a good idea to add some Pitbull to a setlist! titles like Calle Ocho or Krazy come to mind. Akon is good too : Beautiful is great in a dance, especially if you can get your hands on the CD version !
In the end, you might want to add some spanish beats for the ladies to grind on (I don't know how old you people are, but here in Canada nobody thinks it's indecent to dance on that).
See anything by Wisin Y Yandel, especially Noche de Sexo, Yo Te Quiero or Sexy movimiento. You NEED Subete by Alexis y Fido.
One last choice might be Sean Kingston's remix of No Te Veo.
In the end, when it mellows out, get some Wonderwall going. ;)
Hope I helped ya mate !
