Your opinions please - Changes to FFA

Many people have been asking about the gradual decrease of activity at SRL-Forums/villavu over past few months or so. Discussions have been going on behind the scenes and the Staff would like to get your valued opinions on a few proposed changes.
These changes relate to the Free For All scripts forum (FFA) which hold the only scripts available to new Registered users.
The Staff would like your opinions on the changes (if any):
- Allow all types of scripts to be posted in FFA including bankers and collectors- All scripts are allowed - currently all bankers and collectors are prohibited.
- Allow only Power Skillers & Non-Gatherers - This means allow scripts that do not steal resources. (eg allow smelters, smithers, fishers, fletchers and do not allow woodcutters, miners that bank).
- No change - Keep FFA as it is - no banking or collecting scripts whatsoever.
- Other suggestions - Any other good ideas that we haven't come up with?
Please let us know your views on these options by voting in the poll above.
Cheers,
SRL Staff
I voted for all. I say let the scripters to decide where they want their scripts. Less regulations on who can use their scripts. If they don't mind their scripts being leeched, then I don't.
The main argument against this would probably be "Do we want the increase in leechers?".
SRL/SCAR is hardly being used at all for autoing anymore. Once we release all scripts to FFA, are we instantly going to have thousands of people abusing every location in RS (to take it to an extreme :p)? I would guess not.
It would just encourage more of the guests who visit the site to register, get interested in SCAR/SRL, and possibly become scripters in the future, or at least some will provide feed back. The ratio between contributing members and leechers should not change too much; it could only cause more in each category.

Blarg, I messed up my vote. Can someone with power change it from No Change to Non-Gatherers & Power Skillers?
Anyway, something I would like to see happen more, would be "demo" type scripts, like some people have made in the past. So a version with limited features gets released to FFA, while a more full-featured version gets released to Jr. Members.
Of course, this is completely reliant on scripters feeling like doing more work.

I did that a while back with a cake stall thiever. Released the power thieving version to FFA and the banking version to JM. Didn't really take too much extra work at all :)
And I agree with JAD, Let the creator of the script choose where he/she would like to put it.

All scripts should be allowed, we've got nothing to loose.
Most of us came here as leeches – let "us" have what "we" came here for.
Plus, the once-so-active forums aren't so active anymore. The members of the board continue to post, but the activity of the juniors have decreased. Leechers arrive, scan the FFA section – and leave the forums, emptyhanded and frustrated over only finding outdated scripts after going through a troublesome and relatively long setup process.
Release the scripts, definitely.

Allow only Power Skillers & Non-Gatherers & Other suggestion.
Everyone flames the leechers, why bring more into here? so the community has more flaming? And how is allowing only Power Skillers & Non-Gatherers different from no change?
Other Suggestion:
Well I think we shouldn't allow people to leech everything, but instead, try to release a lot more very useful scripts to Jr. (which we already do, almost all scripts go there anyway), and try to encourage Jr's to script more. Maybe make a Jr. Scripting cup, to go along with Scripters cup, for the people who are catching on, but isn't quite good enough for a Scripter cup, to encourage Jr's to start learning more and script more.
But yea, I definitely wouldn't like to see an increase in leechers, areas in F2P would be more full, and JaGex would retaliate if they notice.

Power skillers and non gatherers. Not so much about leechers, as to be honest a lot of jrs are leechers anyway. Mostly due to the effect on f2p training spots being used up more. Let's see how that goes and then we can discuss All later.

our dying activity has nothing to do with whether scripts are free or not, It really is how to install SRL. SRL is very difficult to install (for people who dont know how) and I think we should really take a step towards making it easier to use. I think that would draw in more people rather than kill the division of Jr.Member and just post any script in FFA.

tbh, I wouldn't really care about to many leachers, I script for fun and to help people with macoring. but I do think there should become a standard template to submit a new thread with a lot asked questionds like:
make a form like an application thingy;
- name of the script (text)
- purpose of the script (text)
- location (text)
- Discription (textbox)
- More information (textbox)

Problem is if you allow all scripts to be in FFA what is the point of junior members?.
FFA should only contain scripts that do not bank goods. Eg, Potato Pickers, Cowhide bankers. But can contain scripts like smithers, smelters etc cause the goods are already in the bank.

If I were to release a script I wouldn't want to be forced to put it in one place or another because of the rules, I would want to put it wherever I want. Voted for all.

i also vote all.
that way, basic/ scripts that you dont care about go to ffa, to be leached or something, or just to release it for releasing. then you can have different versions of it in jnr members and srl members, being cared for and updated respectivly.

Bebe?
Anyways, my vote goes to power skillers and non gatherers. It is probably the best option, and I
don't think that the user himself should decide. Since some people can forget, or only post their scripts so that they don't have to deal with competition from a similar script in junior members.

All this will cause is that scripters will see that their downloads + stats are good from FFA so they will post their scripts there. Eventually the community will be full of leechers and no1 will want to learn or even process to a junior srl member.

I voted for all, because I think we can let the scripter decide. But, for the falling activity, I agree with Blumblebee. If you don`t know much about computers, (typical runescape player looking to cheat), SRL can very hard to install and get working.
I voted all.
EDIT: I agree with bee.
Since they are new, we should give them some scripts (3-5 scripts) that work REALLY WELL to show them the power of srl.
Maybe we could do the same thing with SRL members, let them make a simple script, and let JR members vote for regiesterd users to become Jr member.

Non-Gatherers & Power Skillers because it would be better. All scripts would mean more popularity but more leechers. I am happy to move my Drain willows to FFA

I don't remember the last time I've seen someone directly flame a leecher. That's pretty much impossible because leechers don't post ;) I'm assuming Non-Gatherers would consist of scripts that do things like fish, soften clay, etc. EDIT: Oh, missed that explanation when reading the post :p It might be hard to distinguish between those types though. For example - What about flax? It doesn't really affect anyone if a lot of people are there, but it does hurt them slightly.
No areas would be any more full than they used to be. I'd bet 90% of those who come here and find that they don't get free banking scripts wind up at some place like RSBot, where they leech and take up training spots to their heart's content.

Jr. Members could probably be a place for scripters to put their scripts if they don't want to answer millions of questions from those that know virtually nothing about botting or SRL in the FFA section.
I voted All. Personally, I don't/didn't feel much, if any, motivation to script knowing that something like an all in one fisher will generate no more than a couple replies per day (granted, mine was far from flawless, but still). Not worth my time. Allowing scripters to put their scripts where they want them is the way to go.

What's the point of that? We're trying to increase usage, not decrease, unless I missed something in your post :cartman:
My I dea is that: We'll give them few super awsome scripts. Once they've seen what scar can offer, we'll let them do a "quize" or make a script and apply for Junior member.
Since junior member sections will have A LOT MORE scripts then FFA, some of them might learn that if they work hard, they'll get rewards. This might give them the courage/willingness to learn to script.

I think way too much work, and admins please don't make it All Scripts, if you do what is the point of jr members?
Then SRL will be no different than RsBot, filled with leechers that barely post/script or contribute to the community at all. Not saying RsBot doesn't have some really good members who were once leechers. But at SRL, the community tends to be friendlier, and makes the former leechers set a goal to learn scripting, or simply post useful information.
As a community, do we really want to end up like RsBot?

The idea that RS raping will happen with or without all scripts in FFA is irrelevant. Even if the amount of damage to RS remains the same, what matters is the amount that jagex views is contributed by SRL. If the last update has told us anything, it is that we need to keep that in mind.
We can just give them (something like 5) scripts. Thats it.
I do not want scar end up being like Rs bot. That is why I think we should encourage leechers to start to contribute or learn how to script.

How to get valued members of the community:
Get them interested in autoing.
Get them interested in SRL (as a community).
Get them interested in scripting.
Get them interested in contributing.
I would say those are the 4 vital steps to converting leechers to valued members of the community. Saying there will be more leechers is silly as to have a larger community you need more people at every level.
Every x leechers becomes a Jr; every y Jr's become a Member; every z Member's become a dev.
It's a simple thing about forums that can't be helped. If you don't want more leechers, then work on making scripts that get them interested in SRL and make them aspire to script. Work on creating a better community to make them want to stay. Work on giving them the resources to learn to script and help them when they try, no matter how foolish their mistakes.
Just thought I would give my 2 cents regarding the leecher crisis people keep mentioning…

I don't think SRL will ever become as big as something like RSBot, mainly because it's not nearly as leecher-friendly to setup and/or use, color is generally less efficient than BCEL, and our reflection is not maintained by enough people to be anywhere near bug-free. Sure, BCEL can be detected, according to some of you, but most botters don't know or just don't believe that. In which case, Jagex will probably never focus on SRL versus the bigger bots out there, and we'll only be affected by the updates that are aimed at all botters in general.
Regardless, if we're afraid of Jagex someday making an update that will finish us (which I don't think will ever happen), why wait? Might as well confront it now.
So we should keep SRL small?

This.
There is a completely improper hierarchy right now. Even if we had the option of only having people here who scripted great and were SRL members+, I don't think that would be ideal. In my opinion, there should be a ratio of at least 6 active script testers for each scripter/SRL member+. Right now, it's more like 2 active scripters for 1 script tester. Not good.
As far as the Jr. members voting on registered users, I say definitely not.
I would say that if more scripts are going to be released to FFA, then Jr. members should be made a little harder to get into, though.

I feel the true purpose of SRL is not for mass botting, but to be able to create your own, highly specialized, flexible scripts for private botting. Honestly, most public scripts on here do not get used extensively (besides many FFA scripts, tara's chicken killer, etc.).

Anyone that uses RSBot obviously doesn't, otherwise using it would be 100% pointless.
Either way, this is irrelevant. The reason RSBot is more popular than SRL, other than the free scripts, is because it is more efficient and user-friendly, the point I was trying to make.
You got a point tad, and I agree with it 100%, same with Infantry's mentioning of " create your own, highly specialized, flexible scripts for private botting.".
