Who wants the best proxy in the world?

(Okay, it may not be the best proxy in the world, but it's pretty damn good.)

Now that school is starting for alot of people (and has already started for even more) I've decided it would be in best taste to give people a proxy they can actually rely on. I mean, it will work with EVERY website out there, including Youtube, Facebook, and even Runescape! Plus, since I have just become an SRL Member, I have decided to make this proxy Members-only.

Everybody, I give you FreeTunnel! (that's a download link)

If you want to test it out and play with it right away, download the zip file and open the "runIE.bat" file within. It will open Internet Explorer and you will be able to browse right away. (Note that for some reason IE7 does not work with it, so you can read on below if you want to use Firefox instead)

So, How does it work? It is actually quite simple, basically the zip is a package of 2 programs: MyEnTunnel and FreeCap. MyEnTunnel opens an SSH tunnel to a server of mine and does port forwarding (specifically, it creates a SOCKS proxy on port 1080). What FreeCap does is hook onto a winsock dll, making all traffic for that specific program go through a socks proxy. See how they connect?

Not only can you run Internet Explorer, but you can run ANY program through this proxy!

How do I run my own program through this proxy?
Well, there are two possible ways of doing it, and that depends on whether or not your program supports SOCKS proxies.

If your program supports SOCKS proxies (this includes Firefox, X-Chat, etc.), Simply set it up through the program's settings to connect to localhost port 1080.

If your program happens to not support SOCKS proxies, there is still hope. Not all programs work through FreeCap (such as IE7 and games like Warcraft 3… yeah, my friends don't usually do schoolwork at school) however for the large majority you will be just fine. This is quite a bit more complicated than above, so I will show the steps:
1) Copy runIE.bat to a name of your choosing (say, runPython.bat, since I like to use python at school)
2) Open the new file in notepad (can be done by right clicking and choosing "Edit")
3) Where it says "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe", change it to the path of the program you want to run (it can also be a relative path, so for example you can change it to "../Python26/python.exe")
4) Get rid of !%CD%/freecap/homepage.html!. That's basically there to open up the default homepage, and might screw up other applications.
5) Click your new file and you should have no problem :)

I also think an FAQ is obligatory, so here you are:

Q: My school blocks almost all of the ports. Are you sure this is going to work for me?
A:
It will work though just about all firewalls, as it connects on port 8000. This port is usually open as an alternative HTTP port, but works just as well for this.

Q: Wouldn't you need to be an administrator on the computer in order to use this?
A:
Nope, no admin privileges are needed to run this program. It can all be done as a limited user.

Q: I can't run EXE files at my school. What do I do?
A:
Unfortunately you are out of luck. You must be able to run an exe file, otherwise it will not work. Luckily most school computers allow you to have a usb stick with portable programs on them.

Q: Are you using this proxy to steal my passwords?
A:
No! I am very big on privacy and security, so that would be going against what I stand for. Not only that, but this program acts more like a tunnel than a proxy, so for the majority of websites it would be IMPOSSIBLE for me to gain passwords, just because of the way that SSL works. Basically, when Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox run through this proxy, it will retrieve the actual SSL certificate from that website, whether it's facebook, gmail, etc. and anyone who knows how public key encryption works knows that this means only facebook can read your password. My proxy is in the middle and can only see the encrypted data. Other proxies are web-based and cannot offer you that level of privacy. :)

I hope you enjoy this proxy. Please, don't use anything really bandwidth-intensive, I do have a bandwidth limit and there are many things you can just as easily do at home. Mainly, please don't do bittorrent or download 4GB files multiple times. Youtube and video streaming sites are just fine. Enjoy!

Thanks, I'll give this a try

Edit - May I just ask how much bandwidth you have? I am not planning to download anything as I have enough bandwidth at home.

Edit 2 - I will most likely use this at school, it is very nice. Good work!

This is very nice! If only I could somehow put this on my Itouch and use the schools internet without everything being filtered :).

I have a workaround for macs that can essentially make Safari work like this proxy, PM me if you're interested.

As for everyone else who is asking about bandwidth, I have a 250GB per month limit, so playing runescape, watching youtube, facebook, games, etc. You are just fine! Go ahead and play runescape for weeks on end if you want (I used to have dial-up and was able to play runescape, it isn't a bandwidth-intensive game at all). Basically the only thing I don't want people doing is connecting uTorrent to the proxy and downloading the 30GB torrent of the next new TV show. So as long as there isn't any torrenting, you're fine.

Well good job. Sounds like a really awesome program. In Kansas, we got a new filter this year. It's pretty annoying so I might use this.

Doesn't work :(

Keeps saying connection timed out (in Firefox and in the System Tray).

I'm using your server as a tunnel right now from school with Firefox :p

Unfortunately, we use IE7 so I'll still stick with my PuTTy/Firefox combo, but it's still nice that you put it up here :)

Also, for anyone used to web proxies, all javascript and everything will still work in whatever you're browsing, since I know facebook any myspace don't like web proxies very much

Does this still work? The download link seems to be broken. I'm still looking to use it though.

You could also ssh to a home server, and then use a SOCKS 5 proxy to your home. :)

I've done that before, but this saves me having to set that up ;)

Is the link broken for anyone else? :\

I wanted to see if it worked at school.

Yeah, it was kill'd, as NxTitle's server died. We had fun raping the bandwidth as a Tor exit node though =D

*cough* that's all it is! Except replace home server with my VPS.

Anyways, I have it taken down for now since I'm busy with a couple other things. The demand is here, so I should be able to get it up sometime this week.

Also, I hate laptops with GMA… They never work with linux… (I want to get this fixed, badly)
