SCAR Luna, what to expect...

Freddy1990

Some of you might be wondering what exactly to expect of SCAR Luna, the 3.5 release of SCAR I'm currently developing… Well, it's basically a rewrite of the front-end, meaning the GUI and the implementation of the script engine and systems tied into it, the functions themselves will remain fairly the same, of course backwards compatibility will also be kept. A few nice new features will be added as well, such as code folding and more… The actual concept of the program doesn't change here though, neither does the script engine, that will have to wait until SCAR 4.

:D Any chance/possibility SCAR will be able to be used without WINE? :) (I was thinking about it, and I realized it might not be possible, but I don't know much about how it works.. :p)

Sounds very nice Freddy. Got any idea of when it will be released?

I doubt anytime soon, as it would take a lot of work.

This is only my opinion, but I think it would be better to spend all that time (which could be used for writing Linux, or even Macintosh versions) for improving the Windows version (current SCAR)… There is seriously not THAT many Linux/Macintosh users around, comparing to Windows users…

& no, I don't have anything against Linux/Macintosh.

Cool news Freddy! Been waiting for these, heh…

Alright, thanks, Janilabo. :) I understand, I just didn't know how much work it'd be.

I hope as soon as possible, the tab system is based off of the one in Caderno, only it's slightly more refined… It's like the 5th draft of my tab systems or something, that should add some nifty new stuff I hope… I've been working a lot on Caderno 2.0 in which the new editor component I got from a sponsor is incorporated, so now I know how to use it pretty much completely which'll allow me to implement it fairly quickly in SCAR. So I'm hoping to get something close to an Alpha version done within 2 weeks to a month.

Yes, SCAR is my only remaining running project that is still built with Delphi 7.

Even I don't know exactly how much work it would be, but a lot. :p

It's just easier (and quicker!) for everyone to either…
A. Dual-boot Windows [XP/7] with the other OS (Linux/Macintosh)
B. Get a (new?) PC with Windows [XP/7] (thanks to technology, which is getting cheaper and cheaper <3), for macroing purposes.
:D

I think you underestimate the Linux users here - maybe a large scale poll should be done :)

I don't. I know how huge the Linux community is… But it isn't so big around the "world of RuneScape cheating".

Yeah, it sure would be nice to have Linux version of SCAR… But, that would definitely need work from a community, or could you imagine rewriting SCAR from scratch, yourself? I can bet it would not be that simple task, at all. It takes time, so why not spend that time for improving the Windows version instead?

Freddy1990

2009-08-30 01:55:32

I'm not dismissing the possibility of writing a native Linux version of SCAR, but for now I feel it's more important to focus my efforts on this.

mixster

2009-08-30 02:02:25

Well, at risk of being classed as silly, there are people who are familiar with how basic macro related stuffs on Linux would work already involved in the community. I am assuming that if everything would be backwards related, then not too much would need to be changed else it would be a fairly common change :)

Oh and I did mean here on SRL Janilabo, a majority of the IRC users have Ubuntu and use it mainly. I'm sure asking around on the forums would reveal a lot more - I think most people have become resigned to using Scar through Wine so don't bring it up so much.

Yeah, but it is still a rather small group, compared to the group of people, who use Windows. That is a fact…

But lets hope in future there will be a version for Linux(&Macintosh?). :)

Hmm, my Leviathon project was supposed to become a cross-platform implementation of SCAR, but it's written in FPC and though all of the code compiles cross-platform, it doesn't actually work properly or at all on linux… The FPC implementation of some native windows api calls for linux is somewhat unperfected at the time…

OT: I still hope that scar4 will use the mouse/and keyboard driver to direct input to a client :'D.

SCAR Luna will have it yes, SCAR 4 will have it as well, but not in the core.

Assuming he puts it in a plugin ("not in the core"), I would not consider that special treatment, as plugins are separate from the actual program.

Freddy1990

2009-08-30 05:36:18

SCAR will get more RS specific functions, outside of the core, indeed as BullzEye says, in a plugin, the plugin system will support regular and official plugins, the official plugins will be made by me for various purposes… The RS plugin will provide people making includes or scripts for RS with a library of RS specific functions such as rs_GetUpText.

Smartzkid

2009-08-30 05:50:25

My thoughts…

Why not release all RS-specific code as open source? That would completely release you from SRL, and you would have no 'moral' obligation to conform to their needs.

On the topic of includes… there would be a great advantage in having a list of SVN urls to download. Perhaps a full blown 'include manager'? This would give other includes a fighting chance at earning some popularity.

Hmm, the RS specific functions contain a lot of code from other functions, so I rly can't release them, however, I don't want to stop supporting RS…

That's the idea basically, the include system would allow people to both upload their own includes in archives or to use a subversion server…

Note that SCAR Luna will not have subversion support anymore, it will feature a simple archive-only include system for multiple includes. I'm going to have it autoupdate SRL from the snapshots in that system though, seeing that would remove the need to upload a new copy of SRL manually at each release. Might do the same for other includes that use SVN though. But building a really large system for Luna is out of the question, because it's not supposed to be that big of a project, just to stabilize SCAR until I finish SCAR 4, which will be the really big change…

If you're adamant about not releasing some of the functions that the RS specific ones rely on, you could make those functions available to call from a plugin and release the RS specific ones in plugin form.

Or did I misunderstand, and you actually copypasted code into them, which you don't want to release?

I'm not sure what you mean. If you thought that I meant he copypasted it from things he didn't write (random places on the internet or something), I didn't mean that. What I meant was, he may have put part of his FindColor, or something like that, into it, which he doesn't want to release.

But plugins can be used by other programs as well. So someone could in-directly steal your methods. Interesting

True, which is the main reason why I have not done that so far, if you must know.

rs_GetUpText was actually an experiment to test a lot of theories about color comparison and such, a lot of my work is directly based on the algorithms I wrote for that…

Hm. In this picture..

I don't get the lines on the side. I don't get why it has lines 60, 62, and 70 numbered while others aren't. And two are lines.. and some have [+] and some have [-]'s.. And the { … } thing with the codehint like thing having a Writeln.. Could you explain those? :) And do you think there could be a prerelease to the whole community or a select few for bug testing? =X I think that'd be a good thing to do so people don't complain and bitch about it.. :p But it's up to you. ^^

Either way, good luck, it seems to be good, and have fun with it! :) I can't wait.

Every line gets a ., except for every 5th, which gets a - and every 10th line gets a line number, also the active line gets a number. Those [+] and [-] are folding ranges, you click the button it it'll fold/unfold code which when folded will appear as that […], when hovering that it'll show a box like that with the code that's folded. Prerelease versions will be released trough the SCAR Prerelease Subversion Repository, same as now.
