For some Background information on this, please read " Forum Activity " .

Changing FFA ideas:
  1. Adding a Timer to scripts, So all scripts are allowed, but will onl run for a period of time
  2. Allowing all scripts except those that take away training spots (miners, wcers, fisher, etc) (allowed: fletchers, alchers, smelters, etc)
  3. Just Simply allowing all scripts
  4. No change

Discuss.

What is good? What is Bad? Ups and Downs of each idea? Which is best?

Only ones that really take up training spots are fighters, miners and wcers. TBH I wouldn't think bots taking up training spots would be too much of a problem anyway. However that timer might be a good idea.

I like the timer, but that would need to be integrated, and placed into SRL or SCAR. Preferably SCAR so it can't be removed.

I'd think it would be a simple MySQL fetch to get the User groups would it not?

If the person using the script is able to look through and remove it then it would be a good incentive to learn to script.

Yes, kind of annoying for those who ARENT in the FFA section though.

Just have a quick guide of what to look for and how to disable the timer in the JM forum.

Wait, what? This is happening already?

It shouldn't be… we are still discussing it! =/

I kinda of like the timers but I dunno. I can see someone finding out how to disable it and telling everyone how to. What we could do is add in a procedure that writes a cookie deep into their computer and name it a random string of characters so its harder to find and people cant locate it as easy. And then have something that checks if the cookie code is still there when it starts up. If the cookie reading.writing code is gone or if time limit reached it shuts script down.

IDK, sounds kinda jagexy.

No, As far as i know, nothing is happening.

I don't really like the cookie thing. how would they tell everyone anyway? It's not like registered users know many people from here….

Also, we can always delete.

IF we want to make it harder, maximum i'd be willing to do is a file in srl with the procedure.

SRL/core/FFA.scar

Procedure KillFFA;
begin
writeln('Time Is up.');
TerminateScript;
end;

//then scripter:
SetTimeOut(3*60*60*1000, 'KillFFA');

We can always name it something less obvious.

But by the time to look through SRL or the scripts and edit it out / find a way to get rid of it, they're probably Junior Members.

I say we simply allow the scripter to choose where they want their script(s). If you don't want people leeching your script, then you don't put it in FFA. If you just want people to enjoy your script and don't care either way, then you can put it in FFA. I don't see why the scripter shouldn't be able to choose how their script is used.

I hope at least a few more types of scripts (smithers, fletchers…etc.) are allowed to be posted in FFA.

Also, if people want to use Timers in their scripts to minimize leeching then they should have that option too.

I vote 3. I was going to post the same reasons as JAD

I think that '3' makes it too leechable. I'd rather have a mixture of one and two.

Allow all scripts that don't take training spots wthout any change, and allow scripts that do take training spots (miner, wcers, etc) with a timer.

It is still up to the scripter to choose if he puts it in FFA or not.

If you want to get the activity up, open up all scripts. (3)
But be prepared for a massive and annoying wave of leechers. And they won't stop, too.

3 isn't really my vote. As long as SRL keeps the name of bringing quality scripts, there is not much of a reason to attract much more leechers.
We can't fight RSBot on that, anyway. Let the real leechers go to RSBot, and we get the more mature people.

Of course it makes it too leechable, that's why it would be up to the scripter whether or not he wanted to post in the FFA section and it get leeched if he doesn't care or post in the Junior Member section.

I think that the timing idea is a horrible idea. If scripts had a timer I wouldn't waste my time with them, I'd just leave seeing as how I can auto at other forums easier.

I agree with hating the timers.
I always thought that SRL was free, open and honest above all else. Limiting people seems like an underhanded thing to do. If we have a great product, then why must such extreme actions be used to encourage people?

ZephyrsFury

2009-08-28 18:56:18

I don't think allowing banking scripts in FFA would create that much of an increase relative to the large amounts of botters using the script in JM or RSBOT scripts.

Boreas

2009-08-28 19:08:05

But would it create a decrease in the percent of registered users converted to JMs?

ZephyrsFury

2009-08-28 19:16:09

Not if there are more and better scripts in JMs. I guess the main purpose of FFA is to give people a taste of what we have further up in the forums. Atm, that scripts don't function too well and there aren't too many anyway which is stuffing up the whole system.

Better In JM you say? stick a timer in them in FFA, that'll automatically make JM better ;)

Sabotaging FFA scripts to make JM scripts better seems like a silly solution to me - would it not make more sense to just.. ya know… downgrade some of the lesser scripts in Member to JM and JM to FFA?

Or, even better, let the scripters decide what they want to do with their scripts?
I don't like the timers idea, for the same reasons previously stated. SRL is about making great scripts and coming up with new ideas, not limiting the usage and appreciation of those scripts and ideas.

Make JM scripts better, not FFA scripts worse. I'm starting to dislike this timer idea anyway. Lets just leave it up to the scripter, they can decide if they want their scripts used and leeched more or used and leeched less.
