RS Character Database

Mightn't it be a good idea for a RS character database be constructed for people to use. What I mean is a database of different characters that various people can add to for general use when someone needs to quickly get on rs to do something or do some testing. Some hopeful things it would do.
- show whether each character is in use
- deny the password when it is
- whether or not char is banned or infracted
- gone through tutorial island?
- member?
- success rate of using char (a user rating/commenting system for each one for people to notify when the password doesnt match the one in the system. Sort of like bugmenot's percentage of success rate)
- where each character is located
- If ambitious, every char could have their own page with a general overview of items in the inventory or levels. Making it easier for someone to choose a char if they need something specific to make a script.
The whole idea would largly revolve around the users cooperation and actually showing when info was wrong and updating the locations and whatnot. Most of all adding more users to the database. I think adding to the database wouldnt be such a big problem seeing as afaik, there are some working account makers around and they could be modified to automatically upload their new accounts to the site. Or if someone had players used for scripting and found that they didnt need them anymore they could add them.
I dont know if anyone would be interested in this at all, but i think it would be a good idea since in the once in 8 months when i want to go on to see what has changed, I am always deterred because i dont have any chars whose passwords i remember and dont feel like having to go through tutorial Island. I imagine this would be a lot more useful to someone that is actually making a script and feels the same way about creating an account and going through all the work to get it to the point where they can use it.

How about the Database Mods all have a list of the accounts, and there is a list of the types of accounts for SRL Members to view. To use an account, they must PM a DB Mod, and then they can decide whether or not to give the account to the person. There could be a thread in the Mod/Admin forum (which I'm sure there is) in which the DB Mods edit the first post to declare the status of each account.

That's an good idea, I support it ;)
Also, there could be ranks for how much a person uses an account, doesn't take anything, and blah blah blah. :p And lower level accounts/accounts the owner doesn't care for should be able to be used by more people than high level accounts, which would only be available for people that have earned it. :)

A do agree with having higher level accounts be for higher ranked users if people were actually willing to have those higher level players donated to being openly used.
As for having a mod allow people to use an account, i think that would be silly. Once again the main purpose is a user created database with mostly user interaction to make it a better db. The mods would only really do things such as deleting accounts that had incorrect data and would be able to be used or to ban users.
I guess there could be a signing up implemented, but i meant for it to be a very open thing. Signing up could help though because the database would show which person last used an account and then you could ban them if they were found to be stealing. (though i doubt that would happen very often seeing as the point is to temporarily use the accounts anyway, and we shouldnt really impose a time limit on how long they can use it).
For the most part it would be an open category of players in which all one has to do to sign out an account is to click a sign out button and then the site will give them the password. Then it will be deemed in use and the password would not be given out to other people.
It would be a user interaction test to see if that kind of open and user operated project could work in this setting, and it would be useful to boot.
The more i think about it, the more i think of new things to add to better it, which makes me think i wouldnt be able to do it. I might be able to make a prototype, but im not the most secure of php programmers and it probably would be wrought with many flaws (if not noticable to the average user) and have very messy code. So i wouldnt even try this unless people showed a serious interest, and would rather someone with more big-project experience to implement it.

The point is not to limit. If we were continuing with user accounts, then i suppose that whoever added the account could impose restrictions to who could use it, by defining people that could or when someone requests use, the request goes to them and they can accept or decline. But I would hope that would only be for higher level accounts that one might not want to be banned.

If you read some of my posts after the first one i explain some possible measures to be taken. But honestly the big part of this wouldnt be whether or not you got your character back. Its meant to be a database of characters that can be used. Which means you wouldnt mind if they got banned or stolen in the process. I have plenty of account's that are good in 1 (like 60-70+) skill or another so i can lend about 20 or so for testing etc
I just glanced over and this is what i was thinking, tell me if I got the wrong idea.
So like, I could make an include, all you would have to do is fill in declare players + booleans of what to check for, then, using reflection, just log in, get all info, and write to a database?
The include would send to a user inputted id on my website. Then, I just use a login system on site to show accounts related to that login, with nice formatting for each character.
Is this what you meant??? Because I could make that.

here's how it should work.
1. Only the very trusted people would actually b trusted with Authorising such as zeph, wizzup,RM and some very well known people
2.It is accessable to SRL junior/SRL member/ and maybe registered users if they can be trusted well enough.
(this will all be determined by the secuity people of the database)
3. it would be such like a search engine you put in the stats/skill u need it will comeup with whether there are Available account's of that nature then u put your Name down then it is to be reviewed by the people in charge and if you are successful you will recieve an email stating u have been approved/dissaproved and in the email it will double check with you to make sure you still need the account.
4. Then you merely give the accout back when your finished
As for security with our most trusted people on villavu the only issue would be account's gettng banned for account sharing which would mean only 2 people knew the account was being shared so it Would mean that the person/person's cannot get another account for a set amount of time.

I strongly disagree.
If anyone is going to donate characters then you should have protection for them wether or not they want them back.
What stops someone making a script to read the entire database and change all passwords / create recovery questions.
Fagex could just ban the entire list if they wanted to.
I dont think it would work as a freely open database. Look at bugmenot. Half the time its rubbish.
It would take some insane coding to get it working.
- All accounts would need recovery questions set.
- Recovery questions would be known to the Database Operator (not public)
- You would have to be able to mass check the accounts to see if the password is bad, if it is then you would have to change it.
- Ability to change password + reissue on request of use of character.
You
could always do a ratio to the ability to use characters.
For example if someone wanted to test a walker they would simply use a level 3 char thats out of tutorial. These could be free to use because they only take like 15mins to get through tutorial using the runner.
If they wanted to use some sort of skiller then maybe they would have to have ranked up points but adding their OWN character and letting people use it. Depending on the success rate of their character being used by people is what ratio+ they get.
Its a HUDGE project to get it fully working.
Whats a database if its not secure?. You put in hours making it work and some jackass comes along and steals all the accounts?.
mixster

I do feel Dan Cardin's original idea is getting diluted and just wanted to restate it.
You have a database full of characters and their stats.
You find one with the stats you need.
You check them out and in the process receive username and password.
You check to ensure everything is ok, if not report the character, else use it and ensure you update the character as needed.
You check the character back in.
Now for my ideas,
If someone messes with the character, then IP logs and the like can be used to narrow it down. Also, forcing registration to where the database is hosted and requiring confirmation of users relating them to SRL accounts would ensure that a valid and solid trail could be made from the database to the forums. I would say this is enough to deter most SRL Members from thinking of stealing chars and should deter a lot of Jr's (if it were open to them). I would also say that a system of karma relating to the characters would be bad - there's nothing stopping people checking out then checking in a lot of characters just to get good karma then steal high level accounts. Oh, my last point is that if enough characters can be generated for this, then those stolen would not matter. If a hundred or even a few hundred characters were in there, then it would be pretty hard for a couple of people to steal them all. Not to mention someone has to add them in the first place, so if they setup the account nicely with recovery questions, stolen accounts can be recovered by asking the owner of the account to do so.

Ideas are one thing. Who is going to implement these ideas?
Its easy stating ideas but putting them into practice is another thing.
IP Logs? From Where?. Website? Proxies?. Game? Different IP?.
You ovbiously didnt understand the "karma" system. Its not checking in and out characters what purpose would that serve?
Its donating/adding characters. If their success rate is good enough then they are rewarded with more access.
those stolen would not matter
Ofcourse it would matter. Are you volunteering to "generate" characters with 60+ woodcutting, 60+mining, 10M + ?.
It would not be hard for someone to steal the entire database. A simple script would do it pretty easy.
Someone to add them?. Basic PHP Form would sort that..
mixster
2009-08-28 17:01:24
You are not listening.
IP logs from the actual site that would host it - requiring them to register and the like then linking each account to a SRL account would mean that the accounts could be traced back.
The karma system is flawed though - limiting people seems silly, since low level accounts are fairly easy to produce, so people wouldn't need them as much. Sure you could say that if they are easy to make, then the people who want high level accounts could make some them donate to get access, but that is a huge amount of other work that has to be done. I thought the initial idea was pick up and go.
Edit: If you did want a Method` of limiting them, then do it based on forum rank as that would be the best indicator of trust at a glance
I am not volunteering to generate high level accounts, but it's not hard to. I can leave several characters running a fighting script for a week or two to get them all up to 40-50's in strength, attack and defence with minimal effort - if I could then get my hands on a good mining script or woodcutting script that would last as long, I would gladly run that for a while too.
Stealing the database would be hard. The whole point of a check in check out system is that the characters you are taking are limited. Not only that, but it doesn't seem like it was intended as a Scar implementation, but a php implementation.
Unsure what the last point is, if you're talking about how people would add characters, a form after they're logged in would work well.

I think mixster has the idea down pretty well. Its kind of like a library. The library doesnt KNOW that you'll give the books back, but they lend them anyway with the notion that if you dont there will be penalties.
As for jagex banning, they have no way of knowing that any of those accounts were actually autoed with. The could very well just be logged on to find colors or just for general use. This is even considering that jagex knows about it or cares.
EDIT: also it would be a fairly large project but no larger than SRL Stats i my opinion.

Thank you's, but I was basing it primarily off your first post - I think a lot of people only skimmed through it and just wanted to restate it for their benefit.
It would probably be a smaller system when you think about it though - you would only need 2 tables (RS_Chars, users) then have several pages for: registration, request & return, moderation (referring to updating account info) and character submission. Amongst those, minimal php would actually be needed. Basic db insertion and checking for registration, simple searching and queries for request & return, simple query for moderation and simple insertion query for submitting chars.
I would say that the only step that would need some form of complex stuff would be to have a character and password encryption setup in case the site/database is compromised and then of course we move on the integrity of who has access to the site and how we can be sure that everything is safe while in their hands - if we were to have enough faith in them, then character and password encryption could always be avoided.

It doesn't need to be officially linked, but having a requirement that they send a pm to a database moderator with a specified string would work - it would mean after being removed from the database, unless they have multiple accounts, then they would be unable to rejoin to offend again. Not to mention no admins have said that it can't be - maybe if it does take off it could be or not, the future is open and nothing has even been produced yet.

but if people are indeed donating higher leveled accounts and want to give them some metaphorical condoms, then a system of linking accounts to people (easy) would be needed to allow for those people to allow requests be sent to them (harder) when people want to use such an account. For the most part i would assume people would usually donate characters that wouldnt need such protection, but otherwise it would be a good idea and a fairly easy way to set people's minds at rest if theyreally care that much.
Rogeruk the only really mind changing thing you said was security. Otherwise it would be the duty of the donator to set recovery questions if they wanted to. Which leaves you with no real standing for why it wouldnt work. Then again i may have missed something. (not that i want to get into a debate about the merits and flaws. Hmm account sharing is a good point. Im not sure someone could quite call it account sharing. You're just leaving your password online for people to see. If that happened to a regular person they wouldnt ban them (seeing as they cant really prove that the account's been shared). So its a flaky loophole that Im not sure would hold up in practice but even so. They would only be able to ban accounts (if they were to bother/ even knew about it) that they could access. Which means the higher level accounts that people were to place protections on (meaning having to grant access to the account for someone to use it, which would make it not the db's fault, but the user's) would be safe, and the others wouldnt be too large of a loss.
This is all assuming that jagex cares/knows about it. I have had multiple account's usernames posted online usually with some inkling that said that they had been autoed accounts, if not only that i was posting them on an autoing site. None have been banned. As have other people. I dont think think that it will happen with this either. And assuming it does, seeing as it will only happen to throw away-ish accounts, it will prove itself wrong (with rather small consequences) rather than not get be accomplished because people thought it wouldnt work.

Well, how about we start a small system where by people just create accounts, run them through tutorial island then upload them? Doesn't take long to do, especially with a script, and it would be a good measure as to how willing people would be to participate. From them onwards, people could use them to get colours and the like and test scripts so that they become leveled over time. Not to mention as they are pretty low level accounts, with probably minimal effort put in, they wouldn't be a loss and it would be a good indicator as to how likely Jagex would be to ban them.
