1. Light match
2. Throw in computer
3. ???
4. PROFIT!

;)

And couldn't you just boot it up with a CD? =X Like.. get a Ubuntu CD, put it in, turn on your comp.. press F12 (might be different for you) a bunch during start up.. then do a full install. Fixed comp + a real OS.

… Get a blank CD, go to a friends house, burn the .iso onto to the disk. Ubu is free.

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

=X Doesn't take long to download, nor does it take long to burn onto a CD.

:p I think it's a waste of time. But is Ubuntu pronounced 'oo bun too' or 'you bun too'? :o Because the title for that page is, 'Request an Ubuntu CD,' and that'd only be correct if it was 'oo bun too'.. :p

He got ubuntu running and is now just going to order recovery CDs from Acer.

Go to some other computer, download GParted, it's freeware I think. Burn it to disk.
Insert the disk to your broken computer, wait GParted to start.
Empty all partitions on your harddrive, but remember to flag 'boot' to your priority partition!
Now shut down your computer, take out GParted CD and insert Windows XP and install it, and everything should work normally.

EDIT: I've been trying to order my recovery CD from Acer for like a month, I'm still not sure if they have sent it to me.

I had this happen to me once on my old laptop (I think I remember you saying you use a laptop?). The problem was, SATA support was turned off in the BIOS. If you're still interested, check around in your BIOS for SATA settings.

If the hard drive has no shit on it, then reinstall XP once again.
SIMPLE.
