Lucid Dreaming Guide

Well, i saw that on the forum "What is Reality" someone asked about lucid dreaming and how to do it. So i wrote this tutorial.
Well, seeing that people liked my old lucid dreaming guide, i have decided to write a new one. This one will have even more detail, go deeper into hynposis, and some more techniques with some extras. I will not use so much bold in this one, as people complained about it :P
What is Lucid Dreaming?
Lucid Dreaming is the art of being able to control dreams and do whatever you want. The most common reasons people do this are to stop nightmares, problem solving, or fun. We will be going over these later.
FAQ:
Is lucid Dreaming Occult or Demonic?
I am not god, but i dont think there is anything (this is comming from my view as a christian) biblicly wrong with ld'ing. (lucid dreaming). I have read most of the bible, and dreams were in it when god gave people visions. Also, a sin (ive heard) cant happen on axident, which lds sometimes do.
Lucid Dreaming and New Age?
To some, lucid dreaming is concidered new age. If lding is new age, then so is sleeping and dreaming, so this is false. There are 2 dream viewpoints, alot of people say that you are in another dream realm, (astral projection), but scientificly you are in REM (rapid eye movement, this has been proven).
If you have any more questeions, dont hesitate to ask and i will add
Disclaimer:
I am not responsible for anything that happens from following this guide. Dont be scared from reading that, its safe.
Reality Checks
Reality Checking is very important in all lucid dreams. They are ways of telling reality from dreams. There are several ways of doing this:
*Look at you hand. You probably have like 40 fingers or 3.
*Plug your nose - If you can still breathe, do another RC (reality check) to make sure your not crazy.
*Jump - No gravity in lucid dreams
Notice:
Lucid Dreams are exactly what you expect them to be. If you think there going to be scary, its going to be scary. If you think dream characters (DCs) are purple, they will be purple. If you think it will be fun and awesome and dcs are full of life, so it will be.
Dream Journals
Before we go any farther, i would like to say that alot of people like to keep a dream journal, for dream recall and to look for reaccuring dreams when DILDing. They are not crucial, i do not use one.
Induction Methods
There are alot of induction methods for a lucid dream. Not all of them work for everyone, but when you find the one that works best for you you can have 2-15 ld's in a night.
There are two types of Lucid Dream inductions. There are lucid dreams induced from a awake stage, and there are onces inducted when you are already in a dream. I would suggest wake induced lucid dreams over dream induced lucid dreams, as they are more successful. Most people would suggest sleeping 2-5 hours before a wake induced lucid dream for REM, this is faster and can be more vivid, but i do fine with doing it before any sleep and working my way up (more dreams :)).
Dreams Inductions While Asleep
I would not suggest these, but many people like them so here we go…
The Reality Check Induced Lucid Dream
This is induced by getting in a habit of reality checking every 30-1 hour. I dont prefer this (i started with it though) because you have to wrap your real life around for it. Once in a habbit of reality checking alot, you will start to do it in your dreams (this takes time).
DILD (Dream Induced Luci Dreams)
DILD's are a very popular lucid dream. They are lucid dreams where you find out that you are dreaming while in lucid dreams (these are ones that happen accidently). It is done by looking for dream signs such as:
*Reaccuring Dreams (Used with a dream journal)
*Breathing when being drowned or sufficated
*Anything paranormal
MILD (Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dream)
I dont know to put this in to wake induced or dream induced. Basicly all you do is repeat "im in a dream" in the back of your head while in bed and when you pass out you still im in a dreaming and RC.
Wake Induced Lucid Dreams
These are the most successful and vivid. There are sevaral types of these (not all of them work for everyone).
WILD (wake induced lucid dream)
This is very popular, and may take a while to get down 100%, but can be very vivid and successful.
WILDs can be accomplished as a Nap, or in a REM Cylce (i do them before rem cycle but its better to do it after for a begginer). Rem is in the middle of the night.
To do this technique, get really relaxed and lay down. Clear your mind, the less thoughts you have the better you are detachted to enter a dream state. You are moving your physical stimuli into dream stimuli.
Good practice for clearing your mind is closing your eyes and not thinking for 5 mins, and every time a thought inturupts, retry, tell you can go 5 without thinking.
So lay down, relax alot, and clear your mind, meditation is often a good way of doing this although not nessacary. People who report having lyrics in there head and stuff may want to try medditation, i will add a meditation guide as soon as i know how to do it (lol).
It will take anywhere between 15-45 mins your first time, and after doing this alot dreams will become more vivid, and you will be better at picturing stuff.
Within this time period you might: (not all effects happen with everyone)
*Feel like you are floating - Like waves are running through your body
*Hynotic Imagery - Focus on the black and ignore this
*Wooshing sounds, or people talking - Ignore this
*Awake tests - your body will test to see if you are realy asleep, this can be uncomfortablility, to loud sounds and flashing
*Sleep Paylasis (see underneath all induction methods)
*Vibrating - This is when you are going into the actual dream
*Flashes of light and people
*Sounds
Eventualy you will vibrate and your eyes will open. Dont get too excited or youll pull out. The most common reasons for a failed WILD is:
*Fear - Theres nothing to be scared of. Pray or something.
*Exictement - I see alot of people on the forum are getting excited, dont it will pull you out.
*Inturupting thoughts - Try meditation or practice not thinking
BILD (black eye induced lucid dreams)
This is now my new favorite.
You know when you close your eyes you see all those changing moving colors? All you have to do for this technique is focus on these, relax deeply, and notice every color, everything. Fall into a trance with them, clear your mind, this is similair to wild, and a dream will form.
Sleep Paralysis
When i was a kid, i would have night terrors. Every night, i would have a nightmare and wake up. When i woke up, i would feel tightened, my breathing slowed to a minimum, i could not speak, as if the words were frozen as they came out of my mouth. I would be very scared and could not move. I was parallelized, and i could see monsters running at me, coming from my bed, my closet, anything you could think of.
What i found out i had was hallucinate sleep paralysis. This is when you fall into SP (Sleep Paralysis) but are still half in a dream (the hallucination). You will experience this, not hallucinate but you wont be able to move. If you fall into this and need out, focus on your index finger and wiggle it tell your out. This is common for the WILD technique.
Dream Recall
Alot of people have lucid dreams and dont even know. You know when you dont think you dreamed (alot of people posted that they dont dream) you probably did and just dont remember it. In order to remember dreams:
*Keep a dream journal - I dont do this but i hear it works. Every day when you wake up just drought down your dream.
*Lay down for 5-10 mins. Dont move, just remember.
Increasing Vividy
2d crappy mario lucid graphics are no fun. Just shout "Increase Vividy" tell you get the vividy you want, and note: the longer you have slept before the better vividy, rem gets better as it is developed. You will become better at visualizeing from lding alot
Walking Around
Moving around in lucid dreams is different then in real life, you move with willpower.
Flying
Flying in lucid dreaming is very fun, although alot of people dont believe they can therefore they cant. I can just liftoff, and you will too when you get good, but to start id suggest jumping and bouncing around untell you start going (there is no gravity in lucid dreams).
Eating Food
You can tase very well in lucid dreams, and alot of people think its fun to eat alot without getting fat. You could diet off this too.
Spawning Objects
Something people have a hard time with at first is spawning objects. To do so, just look down at your hand and believe something is there
Spawning People
Believe its there, blink, and its there.
Changeling LandScapes
There are many ways of changeing where you are, i remember my first dream i spawned some DCs (Dream Charectors) and just ran around seeing where i ended up. I ended up in a place with a tv, not sure where i was, and i had the remote. I fliped the channel untell i found teh landscape i wanted, and jumped in. When i was done there, i closed my eyes. I decided i was in the desert, i felt the hot sun on my head, i was swetting, and i opended my eyes and there i was. I was in the desert.
I hope that story gave you an idea of changeing landscapes
A note on Dream Charectors
known as dc's, dream charectors are interesting to conversate with. Alot of them are funny, and fast at thinking. Scientists would tell you they are figures of your imagination. I remember hearing a story once about a guy named dan who lucid dreamed. He had a girl sitting on his lap, and then told her he needed to wake up and go into reality. She said, "What? You dont think im real?" and he said "No your in my dream haha" and laughed, she, angered, gave him a cigarate burn, and when he woke up, the burn was on his hand, and he felt it. Talk to a DC, it is fun
Just a note on control:
I just saw that "snapping fingers thing". I tried it, and it does work. The thing is, i dont even have to blink or anything to change landscapes because i believe and now it will happen. The tips on changeing/spawning stuff are only to make it easier on yourself untell you get better at it.
Feeling in Lucid Dreams
You can feel in well in ld's. Your mind sends sences. You can feel pain, taste food, get excited, scared, sorrow, happiness or any feeling
Hypnosis Induced Lucid Dream
I often use this failsafed with WILD (lmao). Basicly you can get your sc to tell you when your dreaming.
So, lets get started.
What is Self Hypnosis?
Self Hypnosis is very real and Has/U] been scientificly proven. It is a way of talking to your subconc, and commanding it to do stuff. It is not dangerous, it is safe, and it cant turn you into spider man :(. However it can get rid of fears and help with stuff like that. But in lucid dreaming it can help by telling you your in a dream and makeing them alot more vivid. I often use this with WILD to make sure there is not chance of failure.
I will not be teaching to deeply into self hypnosis, and if you cant do it post that and i could add some more detail to this part of the tutorial.
Doing Self Hyonsis
Self Hypnosis is 80% relaxation, as sleep is 100%, so its basicly like being on the verge of sleep. It helps to be able to visualize stuff well, which lucid dreaming improves, but not needed. You do not have to do this every time you go to bed, only once:
The goal of hypnosis is to relax yourself completely and talk to your sub. There are many different ways of relaxation:
I got to take a shower when im back ill finish this part lol. Back sorry i took a while i have a dick infection and it hurts…anyways back on topic. I will be going over my best method of realaxation and if it does not work for you tell me and ill add some more.
Lay Down on a bed or sit on a chair (chair is preferred if you pass out easily). Drop your shoulders and close your eyes (not hard, just nice and comfortable. Dont force them shut) Tense up, count to ten (visualize the numbers as they go down) backwards and then release (relaxes your musles a little). Next, imagine yourself (your body as if it was transparent) being slowly filled with water, and tell yourself as the water comes up you will become more and more relaxed and liquid like at that part of the body. In like 30seconds you will be filled completely with water.
A brief note: Not everyone feels different. Alot of people think they wornt in hypnosis because they did not feel different. Some effects that dont happen with everyone are:
*Your eyes will flutter and try to open. Ignore This. *You may feel stoned *You may feel like your floating *You may feel like waves are comming up and down your body.
Continuing, and when i say tell yourself think it dont say it out loud.
Imagine that you are looking at a door. At this part things should get a little vivid and more realistic (not always). Notice everything about the door. The color, is it red, blue, dark green? Everything. Tell yourself that when you open this door, your eyes will shut tight. Tell yourself they are shut like a garage, and it would be very hard to open them. Open the door and imageing you are standing on a 20 foot stair case that leads down to a beach and enters the water. Tell yourself while imageing it that at stair ten your toes will dip into the water. Then at 15 you will be up to water in your waiste. Tell yourself that with each step, you will slowly get more and more relaxed, and when you enter the water, the part of your body that enters the water will become 5x more relaxed then it is right now. Now go down the stair case, pictureing yourself with each step. Listen to the calm waves smack up against the walls of the staircase. Picture each letter. By the time you are completely underwater, you should be in a deep enough trance for this to work. Now swim (or walk some people cant swim) down the water. Then imagine 3 gifts sinking down from the top of the water.
When they reach the bottom onto the sand, focus on them. What type of paper are they rapped with? What type of bow? What colors? Take note of this in your head. Notice the tag with your name on it. Open up the first box, and notice it is a orb. What color is the orb? Notice the words that come up from the orb and write themselves in ink, they say:
"I will now reality check every time i am not completely awake" and let it go back into the orb as the orb enters and fills your body. Next, the second gift is:
"The Gift of having more vivid and real lucid dreams" and let it fill your body.
and the fourth:
"Let my Wake Induced Lucid dreams take less time and be more effective."
Now dont pull yourself out immediatly as then nothing will happen. If you have any of the side effects i listed above, then you are sure that it is working, but if not it might of worked and might not. Swim back to shore. Walk up the staircase counting to 20 and becoming a little more tense. Basicly the reverse of before. When you finaly reach the door, tell yourself:
"This is the door of reality which i am now entering". Open the door and open your eyes (opening your eyes might take a while). Now it is good to sit/lay for another 20 mins (take a nap if you need too) so that the blood can come back into your body (so you wont faint, i ignored this my first time and got a horrible migraine).
If that did not work, tell me and ill add some more methods. 80% of the world can be hypnotized.
Things to Do in a lucid dream
This is a list of some fun things to do once induced:

Edit5: Added black eye technique.
Answers to some questions people where asking:
The Man:
Please read this. The flashing lights you saw happened to me every once in a while, mabye it is a test. Like the uncomfomtablity i get when trying. Your body tests you. And as the breathing is slowed, i think you were on the bridge of a succesfull WILD, good sign for your first attempt. And if your mom does not want you to, then im not going to tell you to, just make sure not to make sure not to call people fake lol? idk.
Also, your flashing lights, you might have been going to a bright place (mabye a desert, and the light was in your eyes?).
And lucid dreaming in not daydreaming, although it can make day dreaming more realistic from doing it to much (rem is good for you).
In lucid dreaming, yes you are alseep i think like 50%? Its still good enough rest. Thats a good sign that you made it that far your first time. Im updateing the WILD guide on what to expect right now to better fit your needs.
A note on the cig burn story - Ive been studying deeper into this type of stuff, realy creepy. Tonight i will talk to some dc's about some stuff, pm me if you got any questions for them, and post on here tommorow.

Other than that, good tutorial! I'll let you know how I do XD

yea that cigg burn, makes me think your friend is possessed, how do you get burned in a dream, and it's there, and she got angry… creepy lol.
I remember I had a lucid dream once or twice, I just somehow noticed I was dreaming, and for some reason, I decided to fly, I always wanted to fly in dreams, but it never happens on it's own really. Whenever I tried to lucid dream, it wouldn't work though, but I haven't tried since I was extremely interested in the paranormal, even though this isn't paranormal, it was on a forums for it. Maybe I'll give this a go again tonight using WILD, but that won't be for a while, I just woke up :p. Lucid dreams are very fun, I hope I can make myself LD I would every night if I could. Rep++ for pretty informative guide. And stories too :)

I remember one dream I had about sex (long time ago.. I'm not That horny any more), and I could control every character in that dream by telling them to do something…
That was a great dream, but I didn't woke up even though I got excited.
I have tried to control my dreams for some time now and I've succeeded several times, it's great fun!! Some days ago I dreamed about Death Note. I was killing people just for fun :p
Some weeks ago I dreamed about me having superpowers like spiderman. I were at school with my friends (My brain recognized them as my friends although they didn't have any face) and then I was like flying around and using my special powers to levitate things and stuff like that. It was awesome!
When I go to bed later today then I'll try to use the WILD method. Tomorrow I'll try to use the MILD method and then compare the two to see which of them works best for me :)

Wow that seems awesome, I barely ever notice I'm dreaming, but when I do it's fun. I'll have to try this out. I just hope I don't like it more than reality, or else I'll want to sleep all the time =D.

I forgot to tell about once when I had a nightmare I went to my dad's room and told him about it and he told me that once I start dreaming nightmares then I just had to snap my fingers and then I would be on a beach! I went back to bed and when I dreamed the nightmare came back and then I remembered what dad said and I snap my fingers and it worked :)
That was the first time I controlled my dreams.

I would say that the effect itself wasn't because the finger snapping. But your mind stored that information after you talked with your father so when you made that in your dream your mind done what it stored. So I think if you do this with other things(not finger snapping and not the beach) that would work too. Speak about it or think about it before sleeping. But that's just my thoughts.
Baked0420
2009-08-17 22:41:16
I think it's because he believed it would happen. Like if you tell a little kid when he sleeps the same thing, I'm sure it'd work for them also, as long as they remember you saying it in their sleep. I think the only hard part would be remembering it in the sleep, and not just forgetting.

everyone who is trying a wild, remember that it is easyist to try when you have already slept a few hours, but not completely needed (i dont sleep much, but a wild nap every once an a while) i can do it whenever i want without having to sleep.
and yes lance, its verry possible :P
Thank you everyone who replied to my tutorial, im happy that i made a good once (Its my first) and thanks for the rep. Im going to edit the tutorial right now and add the hypnosis and dream recall.
Thanks,

Thanks for the rep, and have fun. Tell me if it works for you. And im not sure about the dreams/reality, i know that dcs get very mad when you tell them they are fake, talk to them they have interesting ideas. I might make a ld journal on here of talking to DC's about stuff.
Its sad I don't dream pretty much at all. It might be because of the 5 hours or less of sleep I get lol. i dreamed i met this girl in a dream back when i was 10, and I was in a city like Brooklyn or something, I saw her in kmart and she invited me over, I met her brother.
After I awoke, the next day, I saw her in walmart (in colorado (where i live)), no joke, and I know the first time I saw her was in the dream.
[off-reality statement]A weird thing my first memory is a dream of a memory  Like, I remember playing hide and seek with my cousin (I was like 2-4), then I woke up at age 7. I didn't dream i was 2-4, it was something in my life.
Well, I guess the first dream would be 2-4 y/o, but I remembering at 7, that it was the first time I remembered that? Im confusing myself now lol [offtopic]
Lol I made like so much more offtopic then I shouldve.

Wow, lucid dreaming seems like a video game in which you are God :p
The problem I have is I rarely dream. Most often I only dream when I wake up in the morning, don't feel like getting up, then fall asleep for another half hour (kind of like what you said with the try it when you're not too tired thing).
Nice tutorial, Rep+.

haha its all good. And i get like 4 hours of sleep a day and there all wild naps, its okay you can still do it.
I have heard of the whole seeing into the future dream stuff, ill study up, however i dont know what to think of it as i had one similair where someone moved into my neighborhood and it happened the next day. Ill post some stuff on dream pregognition (i think thats what its called). Thanks for the reply too.

Thanks for the rep, and that is a induction DWID which is very common. It does not matter if you dont dream, have a wild and you will. And yes its much like a video just the physics/graphics/ai is alot better…lol.

Good Comment. I think that too, if i said in this tut that when you first lucid dream everything would be purple, and they believed me, when they lucid dream everything would be purple because thats what he expected. And actualy you are very smart in lucid dreams and good at remembering.

I JUST tried WILD, and I felt my self about to fall asleep my breathing slowed to the minimum, and then suddenly there was a bright flash of light, which actually hurt, then a few seconds later, another so I opened my eyes and went downstairs. Me and my mum have been talking about it for about an hour and I have some questions.
Is Lucid Dreaming, Day Dreaming?
Are you actually asleep when you Lucid Dream?
What are these white flashing light that I saw/felt?
Has anyone else got these white flashing light?
My view on the flashing light: The mind checking if I am asleep/awake. I think it always does it but because I was aware of falling asleep I actually felt and saw these lights.
My mum told me not to try anymore because if someone burnt theirchand with a cigarette then you could just as easily chop off your hand or something.
Please answer.

This is the same problem I have.
I'd love to be in control of my dreams :).
I'm going to try this out tonight.
Also, I have felt before that i'm almost floating, while i'm awake in bed. Maybe right before I fall asleep. Does that have anything to do with this?

You know who else saw a bright white light (it blinded him)?
Paul.
Perhaps this is God's way of telling you to stop trying to lucid dream? I dunno, that was my first thought XD

That's because he persecuted Jews.

For me a dream diary was a crucial part while learning about lucid dreaming.
Because learning about lucid dreaming means to learn about dreams and yourself in general.
I had my first self induced lucid dream after 3 weeks practicing. I saw a LAAARGE computer screen in my dream. I Knew that i was dreaming (reality check), and could use my mind to control what i was seeing on the screen.
Than later I had lucid dreams more often(90% recoginzed by reality checks). I tried various Ideas and fantasies (Including stretching the time ALOT, so that when i woke up it felt like i was gone for mutliple days or even weeks!).
Though my goal back than was to practice drawing while sleeping. Which didnt seem to work, cause the more i focused on a drawing I was the more blurry it became. So I figured that creating art in a dreams is something hardly possible.
Things i tried included.:
Extreme Sports, Using my eyes like mega-binoculars zooming in "grass" till the monecular area.
Changing Night to day(Oh, watch out that you also imagine a blue sky, or you will end up with a starry sky with a Sun and a bright day…. looks kinda weird)… Nasty stuff, yeh yeh yeh…
Oh… another thing… In my dreams computers lack usability, with keyboard that only have 2 keys to control everything! Not even a mouse.. i searched so long for that damn mouse :'D….
Feel free to contact me with questions about lucid dreaming, I practiced it for about a year.

Thank you for reminding me about the dream journal. I will add this right now. And as for the whole whats going to happen in a dream, the 2 button thing is crap, its whatever buttons you expect it to be, and you dont know what your talking about becuase the mouse is there (i tested and spawned one). Its whatever you want it to be. The dream journal is not crucial, i never used one.

You know who else saw a bright white light (it blinded him)?
Paul.
Perhaps this is God's way of telling you to stop trying to lucid dream? I dunno, that was my first thought XD
I dont think god has a problem with lucid dreams, i studied that for 2 weeks, the bright flash is perfectly normal.

I didn't think I was going to have to state the obvious, but: real fingers cannot be cut off and cigarette burns cannot magically appear because of a dream…

This is the same problem I have.
I'd love to be in control of my dreams :).
I'm going to try this out tonight.
Also, I have felt before that i'm almost floating, while i'm awake in bed. Maybe right before I fall asleep. Does that have anything to do with this?
Yes. I have never heard of this before, but it happens to mean all the time lol. Mabye its like our form of vibrateing?

Okay I just tried the wild method, although I was not tired.
I lay in bed, for maybe 7-8 minutes focusing on my breathing or the sound of my fan. Occasionally a thought would run through my head or more often music would play in my head. I kept my body still. And all of a sudden my body tensed up, I had the strongest desire to move but I didn't! This lasted 10-15 seconds. But that's as far as I could get. After that I lay in bed for like another 5 minutes and I couldn't focus very well.
If I move my lips or swallow does it cancel the stillness?
And if I think of one thing or a song comes into my head does it cancel everything?
I'm gonna set my alarm early in the morning, get up for long enough that my mind is clear then try this again. I'll update what happens!

Yes I know they cant magically appear, but it is exactly the same as sleep walking, if you want to and your mind is telling you to in your dream then you will do it. Exactly same concept for doing something dangerous.

First and foremost, your friend is a liar. Your dreams CANNOT POSSIBLY EVER hurt you. They are thoughts and thoughts alone. If you sit in your chair and think 'black eye black eye black eye' you will not magically gain a black eye.
The Man, your experience with the lights was probably due to oxygen deprivation. Most people on the verge of passing out say light intensifies quite some what.
I sort of relate to the idea, however, but it is not lucid dreaming. It is Astral Travel. Your astral leaves your body and goes off on a tangent.
@ The Man; If you're in control of your thoughts then you can tell yourself not to chop your own hand off. And even if you do you would wake up as soon as your skin was pierced anyway.

I seem to have a problem with not being able to stop thinking. It never stops. I focused on my breathing, music or random thoughts would go away for a bit, but then I would loose focus (tired) and the music would come back on. The only way I can get to sleep is if I just let the music play on and on in a loop and I eventually fall asleep, but I can't lucid dream because I'm not focused on anything at all.
If I do manage to get the thoughts away, which happened for a few minutes last time I tried, I swallowed as an instinct, and then realized "Oh crap, I swallowed" and started trying to remember if it was bad, and then the music played again.
Any tips with this? Or just more practice? Maybe I will take a nap soon…

Yay finally realized I was dreaming, only for a few minutes though. The bad thing was a giant pig kept chasing me, so I held my hand out, closed my eyes, and snapped, then a 12 gauge shotgun appeared :D. But no matter how many times I owned it (It's face was very graphic and bloody) it always came back… I bet if I had imagined it was spawning from a box somewhere, I could have made that disappear and it would have been just fine again.

I understand this takes practice, but does it work in stages?
For example, I tried my best to focus on nothing and I fell asleep.
I slept till seven am, and when I woke up I had remembered I had a dream (I rarely remember I have dreams).
I remembered what it was about for a minute or so, then I forgot and went back to sleep.
(I wanted to try the WILD method when I was actually sleepy)
So I tried the WILD method again as I was falling asleep at 7 am.
Then I woke up at 10 am and I had remembered I had another dream.
As I said before, it's unusual that I would remember my dreams.
So with practice, will my dreams get better/more vivid and eventually become lucid dreams?
After I told my mum about this, she said that she thinks it's new-aged stuff, so I shouldn't do it. Also that clearing your mind is inviting the devil in.
I understand completely that on some topics, parents think things are bad because they don't understand it.
Could anybody give me their a spiritual oppinion?

I do not think there is anything spiritually wrong with this
in itself. Basically, you are exploring the recesses of your mind.
However, many people use this for sex and other miscellaneous "fun" stuff. Now, that is spiritually wrong.
I don't know what religion you are, but if you really want to answers, pray to God, read the bible, etc.

I didn't get any sleep last night because of this darn tutorial. Lucid dreaming is the idea of controlling your dreams with your thoughts. My thoughts at night are generally not very nice, so hence lucid dreaming would probably be bad because if my thoughts enter into a realm of seeming realism then that would make for some pretty nast nightmares if I am honest.
Is there a way for me not to think about lucid dreaming so I wont have one and can sleep normally >.>

Also, I disagree with this thread. The sounds from your dream are picked up from real life, not visa versa. Like if someone is talking outside the dream it is picked up in the dream, not vice versa.
The noises you hear like banging, etc are amplified in this case because when you close your eyes your hearing becomes louder as the senses increase in power when you cannot see.

Well lol, dont get excited next time. There are two things that might have happened. You could have been in sleep parylsis, and thats why you stiffened up, or could have been going into a out of body experience or astral projection. I dont ap, but i know people who do and lding is often common for lifting off.

No. You have to train yourself to Astral Project. I know this strongly. I only know 2 people who can AP and they have trained their bodies to do it. You dont just Astral Project.
Astral Projection is where your Astral leaves your body and goes for a wander. Astral Projection is real, it isnt in the realm of dreams, what you see IS realduring an AP.

Hmm, have you tried meditating before going to bed? I works for me, I usually turn off all the lights, close my eyes, turns off my computers, close the windows and turn on the fan and meditate to the sound and tries to get my heart to beat as slow as possible without holding my breath :P
Then when I go to bed I close my eyes, relax in every body-part and then I get "dragged" away, first my arms are "removed" (can't feel them anymore, it's like they do not exist), next my legs and finally my stomach then suddenly I am dreaming, but still in my bed.
I have experimented with moving my fingers in the real world while dreaming, and it is a really odd feeling; It's like I am a zombie - Living dead.

Rem is in the middle of the night.
Wrong! I have the finnish book "Introduction to medical science" here on my hands, this book is the entrace test material to all finnish medical schools.
Depths of dreaming from most-awake to deepest: REM, S1, S2, S3, S4
Phases of sleep1st hour: You will fall deeper and deeper into dreaming, skipping REM phase. Being S4 in the end.
2nd hour: Your dreaming will come more awake-like, from S4 to S3 and finally to REM, which is an almost-awake phase, eventhough you are completely sleeping then. REM lasts about 15 minutes, then you will fall back on the deep, S4 sleep.
3rd hour: You fill experience a minor peak on the dreamstate, but not quite getting to REM phase. Mostly being at S4.
4th hour: A rapid growth of brain activity, almost instant rise from S4 to REM. This time REM phase lasts 15 to 30 minutes. After that S2 or S3, so no more deep dreaming.
5th hour: A peak that skips REM but goes near awake-state, then back to S2, S3, and maybe S4 occasionally.
6th hour: Again a REM spike, lasts around 20-30 minutes. After that S2-S3.
7th hour: Steady fall to S4.
8th hour: Small spikes to REM, then most of the time S1 and S2.
9th hour: Awakening. You realize it was all just a dream. You be sad. You cries. Deeply.
Scientists believe that S2 and S3 are the phases when brains go through all todays happenings and filte all unnecessary shit away. This is why if you're studying hard to an exam you should read 4 hours in the morning, take 60-90 minutes nap, drink coffee and get refreshment and then read 4 hours again. If you try reading 8 hours in a row, your brain only catches like the first 6 hours' information.
Subconsiousness does affect your sleep, it's been proven scientifically.
You are more awake (have more ACTH-hormone in blood) in the morning if you are expecting an early awakening, than if you weren't.
What's interesting is that eventhough the actual dreaming happens in the REM phase, sleepwalking is then impossible because REM causes muscle paralysis. This is the reason for the nightmare paralysis' you were talking about :) You're in REM, seeing bad dreams but you cannot move any bodypart.
I have succeeded in seeing lucid dreams a couple of years ago, I think I'll give it a shot again! :) Thanks a lot mate, I hope you found some of my stuff interesting too!

I LD'ed tonight, I was a thief running away from some cops, and it was extremely funny because I had super powers and stuff so I created a knife (with magic) and throwed it at one of the cops and then the other cops began to shoot at me so I made an invisible shield around me and so on ;O
It was like if I was in a fantastic 4 movie or something lol :P

Wow, I was almost there last night! :)
I kept saying "dreaming" in my mind very slowly, and slower all the time. Then I felt the vibrating and saw images of demons coming at me, I knew it was because I was just about to fall asleep and I tried to fight it but the images and feelings were too scary, so I had to open my eyes. Damn! Very close one there! :) That means I will succeed in the near future!

Whoo!
I had one last night! I didn't even need to put an effort to it!
I don't really remember what kind of dreams I were seeing but I noticed that I was standing naked in the rain outside, near my childhood home. Of course, the situation was so absurd it made me think "is this real or dream", and then I suddenly felt very very weird, I knew I was in a dream! I almost woke up the same second, and it was very hard to keep my consiousness and focus, so it didn't turn into a regular irrational dream.
Of course, I went to have sex. Without much success though. Some weird things prevented me from doing it  Anyways, the feeling of being in a dream was just so fantastic I can't even describe.
Weird though, I tried running very very fast and taking like 5 meter jumps, in which I succeeded, but I got exhausted o_O Woot?
When I had ran around places for some time (without success in doing anything but taking a few 5 meter jumps) I felt that I am about to wake up. I tried fighting it, but somehow I knew that this was it. Then I just 'let my self go' and I woke up. It was 12 pm.
I really hope to feel this sometime very soon again, I've never felt anything this awesome! :) It's the realitychecks that work! Maybe next time I'll be more successful in things like summoning objects, running fast or flying.
So it really can happen to anyone, even to the most inexperienced people. Don't give up and think that it needs years and years of practice, just keep doing those reality checks! :)

Lol. Exact same thing happened to me. Except, not demons, aliens < _ > :P I opened my eyes, saw one, opened my eyes again (lolwtf?) because I didn't get enough time to do a reality check then did three reality checks and all came out I was actually in real life =\ But my heart was full on beating after wards though :P

I didn't know there was a scientific term for this, but it's pretty fun when you do.
In the most recent lucid dream, i had started asking people questions. Its silly the responses you can get but if you are confused about something it can enlighten you to the thoughts of your subconscious.
In the past though I specifically remember; giving myself wings to fly around, and another dream where i stabbed myself repeatedly until I woke up, experienced the inability to stop. :(
After reading that wiki article I realize i experience the false awakening quite common really

I had one last night too! I kept counting and chanting "I'm dreaming". I then woke up and did a reality check (holding your nose and trying to breathe, where I still drew breath) and I then go out of bed walked through the lounge room and jumped and almost hid my upper body above the door frame since I was propelled forward (I could never jump that high), then I went back inside and I tried to change the scene (which I couldn't :(), then I was about to go outside and fly and stuff then I woke up. It's funny, because I didn't get the feeling of being dragged away like you, instead
I just woke up, did a quick reality check and all came out positive :(
I suspected it was because of the rain, but I've never woken during rain before (also, this I woke at about 8am in the morning)…

Lol. I love you.
So on topic, I have still been unable to do this. I am a very musical person, and songs are always stuck in my head. I try to focus on things, such as my breathing (thinking "in" "out" for every breath) and on white noise (a fan) but my mind always wanders and soon enough I find myself thinking about songs, and what I did. I just can't lay in bed until I start dreaming without moving and without thinking.
Does anyone have any tips for me? It's almost time for bed, and I really want to try this tonight :p

I can only do it on the verge of sleep. When I am really tired, I just lay there relaxed and counting my breaths, for it is too much effort to think of something else and for my mind to wander :p
Then suddenly after counting every breath, followed by a thought of "I'm dreaming", you will get these flashes with each more vivid than the last. Then you just have to delve deeper and try and hold a particular scene for as long as possible, do this with each sight. Eventually, you'll find yourself able to reach out and dive straight into one. (Note: I'm recounting from my own experiences) You'd probably find yourself in bed in your somewhat familiar bedroom. You may notice strange oddities that will further convince you that you are in a dream. For example, my clocks' LED screen was several times larger in width and had the digits but cut in half.
I suggest you do more than one reality check. These work for me (I do them in the following order):
- Holding my nose and trying to breathe. If I draw breath, then I know I am most certainly dreaming.
- Looking at my clock and reading the time. If it is messed up (as described above), then I am most certainly dreaming. However, if it isn't, then I'll turn my head and look back at it and see if the time is altogether different.
- Getting out of bed and jumping. If I jump quite high, then I know I am dreaming. If I float back down, then I know I am dreaming.
Hope that helps you :D

Those were the types of tricks I was hoping for. From the posts here, I don't know if I'll be able to control anything in my dreams, but i hope that I will be able to recognize that I am dreaming, and to remember it.
So basically, what you do when falling asleep is count each breath and repeat "I'm dreaming" in your head?

That's basically what I do. For example: "2, I'm dreaming", "3, I'm dreaming", "54, I'm dreaming", and so on. I've sometimes reached over one hundred, but that was because I was still mildly awake and not tired enough :p
Also, I keep my breaths slow and steady at a constant pace and concentrate only on the counting. After a while, I've found myself able to count without really concentrating on the last number whilst still being consecutive.

I really tried last night, but I was too tired to focus on the counting, and soon I found that I had stopped counting, and I just couldn't get in the rhythm of counting and saying "I'm dreaming" without losing focus due to how tired I was, so I just let myself drift to sleep. Before I went to sleep though, I reminded myself that I was going to have dreams, and I was going to remember what they were. I don't know if it was because I was forcefully waken up, rather than naturally waking up, or that I told myself that remembering them was important, but I remember 3 distinct dreams last night. Usually, I can't recall them at all, or I can only remember a mangled mess of what I might have dreamed.
I consider that progress, and tonight I will try to focus harder on the counting breaths and telling myself I'm dreaming.

I keep doing them while I'm awake so that it becomes a habit, which hopefully carries through to my dreams. What I remember from my dreams was me just going through my daily life, although I didn't have any control over what happened, like most dreams. I'm just working on trying to recognize my dreams, and then hopefully if I recognize that I'm dreaming, I will be able to control them :)

Too lazy to read the whole guide, but I taught myself how to lucidly dream without actually knowing the meaning to it or being told how to do it, kinda like Inception how they would have their idol to show them if dreaming or not, I would always pinch my cheek when i'm dreaming. I wouldnt do it 30min-1hr all the time but i'd do it instinctively while i'm dreaming. Also I had SP once with a demonic dream 2 years ago and i used all my will to grab the remote to my tv beside me on the bed and press power on to jolt my body awake =D
Edit:
Side note, I had a lucid dream last night
but woke myself up,
since i've had so many nightmares aswell I also developed a defense mechanism
for when I am having bad dreams. I have learnt how to wake myself up
by choice, and whenever I am panicked in a dream.

To control what happens once you realise you are dreaming, you really have to focus your mind on what you want to happen in your surroundings if you master your thinking while dreaming you can make anything happen. It is very hard to do so. even after years of lucidly dreaming on/off it is still hard to control 100% of my dreams.

Interesting post sir, I've been interested in this for a long time and you're techniques are explained more clearly than others I've seen. The reality check section was interesting, I'm a fan of mind expansion and trying to figure out what existence is about so I've done the whole trying LSD and mushrooms, (both if anyone is interested LSD is much better but read about it ALOT before you do it, it's not meant for everybody) I don't think people realize how strong the brain is, it really comes into light if you do any psychadelic enhancers, after some of my experiences I can see how that line between realities can become blurred.

A suggestion for those that try but don't succeed, repeatedly play music via your iPod/similar device (with headphones!).
What type of music you ask? Well, technically that's entirely personal and different for each individual. However, get some music that will make you imagine a vivid scene while you are awake, preferably without words. What do I mean by this? I mean, when you are awake and you listen to this piece of music, you will visualise a scene in your mind (i.e. daydream). It could be you dreaming of who you want to be in the future, or it could be you commanding others to do something (you wanting success).
Play that while you are lying down in bed, make sure it's long and on repeat mode (and won't wake you up when it does repeat [no sudden stops or starts]). While playing this, stay incredibly still and then tell your body as if you are speaking to another person to "relax". Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Now, this step can very hard for some, but you have to allow yourself to visualise an environment (a very vivid scene) from that music (i.e. letting your mind wander), BUT have enough consciousness to snap out of it into a fully conscious state (keep in mind, without moving your body).
Good luck!
Daniel. :)

It's nice to see how many other LD'ers there are ;D
I myself have been LD'ing for about 5 years now… after doing it for quiet some time and learning exactly what makes you LD best you can actually do it on command (I'm not sure if you covered that in your tutorial, I'm pretty tired so only had the willpower to read about half of it.)
Then all you have to do is learn to sleep with your eyes open and your golden! ;D
Of all the techniques highlighted, I personally found the "Dream Journal" to be the most effective.
On topic: Great guide and well explained from what I read (:
In regards to your cigarette burn i too had a really weird dream like that. It happened about 3 years ago and i was "doubling" on my bike with a friend when our tired suddenly lost control and he landed on my arm, we slid across gravel for a good 4-5 feet with his full weight on my arm and tore a gash in my elbow, when i woke up my sheets were covered in blood and my elbow was in the worst bloody pain >_<"
3 years later i still got the scar… freakiest moment of my life!

Had my first LD with semi - full control last night :)
I revisited this guide today. It's been years since I first read it.
I've have tried many times before, but always get too excited once I realize, and wake up with a rapid heartbeat. I used the same strategy as I normally do when I try lucid dream; just deep breathing and clearing the thoughts.
Anyways, I thought I'd explain my dream, whether anyone cares to read or not.
This is the first of my diaries:
I started the dream like always, semi-conscious of the decisions I make, but clueless that it was a dream. It was like most of my adventurous dreams: water skiing near a beautiful island of what seemed to be Greece. It did get a little out of control though. We decided upon using the boat as raft to go down some rapids, and surprisingly enough, the boat flipped. It hurt. But as my semi-conscious dream progressed, I found myself with my two close cousins, cliff diving into the ocean. Swimming is one of my favorite parts of dreams. The depth felt so infinite this time – I stayed down there down there what felt like forever surveying this void of nothingness. It got dark, and the darkened water felt unsettling, so I got out and smoked some weed. This is where it gets interesting.
I was in the universe. I was watching myself walk on a skyscraper. The background had the appearance of a purple - golden galaxy. There was nothing else but me, the skyscraper, and this galaxy. The skyscraper wasn’t vertical; it was horizontal, like a road. My dream was playing music, and I believe it was Pink Floyd’s Echoes, a song I was listening to previously that day. This is difficult for me to explain, but as I walked, a section of the scraper would open up like double doors, and I would walk through it only to be walking on another skyscraper in the same galaxy. This pattern continued for a short period of time, until I found myself inside gloomy colored, geometric cement sewers. I wasn’t disappointed however. I saw a family in bright colored cloths hastily walk by multiple times. Something clicked –
“I’m dreaming”. But this time, I wasn’t excited.
“I guess I’m just gonna go see my friends and let them know,” I thought.
So I opened a nearby door and stepped inside my basement to see my friends. All of my good friends were there BUT my few close friends. The people in my basement were people I loved, but our socialization solely revolved around drinking. Anyways, I told the news to one of my drinking buddies:
“Dude, I’m dreaming right now.”
He had a bummed look on his face. “You mean none of this exists right now?” he said as he motioned his hand across all my friends who clearly were all enjoying themselves.
“Well yeah, pretty much. But hey, you exist in real life, but right now, you’re just a creation in my dream” I said.
I could tell he felt a little better once I had said that. I brought another one of my friends outside to prove that I was dreaming.
“Look.” I said as I pointed to a cloud in the sky and moved it with the motion of my hand.
He was truly amazed. I then looked at someone I didn’t recognize, a possible DC, and like instinct, I made him invisible (similar to the halo 3 invisibility). Everyone watching was ‘oohing and ‘aaahing’ as I made him reappear. I then, with complete confidence, made myself invisible to them. It was incredible how I could FEEL myself turn invisible. My friends’ reactions further confirmed the invisibility. This is one of those moments where I never felt so confident in my life.
I then was telling my friend Nick about how I read the guide to lucid dreaming (this one) and how this ‘guy’ said how gravity is affected in the dream world. We walked outside on the trampoline and both started to jump. I’m not sure if the gravity effect worked on him (it did for me), but he was playing along like it did. I then told him about how in this guide, looking at your hand is another way for proof. My fingers looked like swollen stubs that grew and shrank. We were both laughing like little kids. As I got off the trampoline, thinking about what I should do next, I saw a massive cat, staring at me from across the yard. I didn’t do anything but observe it, which was when I felt the pressure in my bladder; I had to pee. This is what woke me up.
I still didn’t have complete control over the dream, but it was a start. Also, my confidence still wasn’t where it needed to be to be able to do more. My confidence mainly derived from what I remembered and believed from this guide, besides the clouds and the invisibility. If I had more trust in myself, I could have done a lot more. Perhaps if I work on it more in real life, it will pay off in my dreams.
Most of the time I'm able to detect that I'm in a dream, but when I try to alter the dream to much I end up waking up everytime.
Funny because it's a bit like inception lol.
Also I don't think you mentioned it in your tutorial, but if you try to read something in a dream, it will all be a bunch of letters that look like words, separated in paragraph like usual, but means nothing. Something like this:
Ddksf pqkfkem eowqp pproeoj jdjfj.
fqoitirit wptmsb fhf jk fmsue fkdkiw mmq9xc cmidifkp fdskfod, fjsqâldm qoefmaz!
Lskdjf fnnf ewi ofkkkf xmxmam.
Since I always carry my wallet with me IRL, I usualy carry it in my dreams too so all I have to do is read my liscense. Also I notice that my hands are messed up when I take my wallet so it's a double reality check.
Another reality check can also be to look into a mirror, the laws of optics do not apply in dreams and a mirror will usually be extremly blurry or simply reflect light in a very unusual way.

Good luck!
Daniel. :)
Thanks I'll try it too, since I didn't succed on my last try ^^
I'll tell you if it worked :D

I'm gonna try this sometime. :) Thanks.
Ooooh, I sometimes manage to do this just before I wake up, didn't know it was possible to "force" it. Thanks for sharing this!

Sounds cool I remember hearing somewhere that there is a herb you can smoke that gives extremely intense vivid dreams but I can't remember what its called.

Didn't read the guide, but I wanted to say that Lucid Dreams are… They are… Man, I don't even know how more positively I can call them. Believe me guys, it is worth every second… I've had 5 lucid dreams so far, I could say 6th tonight, but I'm not sure about it.
Tonight I've dreamt that I was telling my classmate that this all is a dream, I tried to fly but failed, so Idk, I don't think it was a lucid, tho I said in a dream, that this is a dream.
Lucid Dreams are really, really great. It's like a magical space where you can be free, you can do whatever you want. I don't know how many times I've flied in Lucid Dreams lately… But this shit, let me tell you, it is amazing. I love it. When those who are trying to Lucid Dream, you will mark my words when you succeed. I recommend LDing for anyone that is at least a little bit interested.
Oh, and I think that I went through wall on tonight's dream, not sure, but some memories just came in my head…

Sex in Lucid Dreams is pretty awesome.
Also, a big trigger for telling if you're dreaming or not, is to find some body of water (pool, bathtub, ocean, lake, etc) and submerge your face/head underwater. If you can still breath while underwater, then you're definitely dreaming. I've had soooo many dreams where I've gone swimming and been able to breath underwater.
Also, there's a thing called Binaural Beats that you can listen to as you're falling asleep or sometimes even while you're asleep that will enhance or actually cause you to have a Lucid Dream. I use the App called iDoser (it's a few bucks on iTunes), and then I listen to Lucid Dream, Delta, or Theta. Usually if I have time, I'll play Delta for 15 minutes, and then I'll switch to Theta for another 15 minutes, and I usually fall asleep during the Theta stage (the stage where REM most commonly occurs). Each of the audio clips I mentioned sell for another few dollars.

I don't think I've ever had a lucid dream… I have however heard a lot about them, maybe it's time to start trying

I generally force myself to lucid dream when I can't fall asleep, it's so amusing and comes really easily to me a lot of the time.
I have a scar on my knee from LD. I had a dream where I was riding my bike at my old house. I stopped at an intersection and once I saw there were no cars coming I started to ride my bike across. A car appeared out of literally no where, I knew I would get hit if I kept going and I managed to hit the breaks on my bike and avoid getting hit but, in the process fell off my bike onto the curb. When I woke up I had a little gash on my knee that was bleeding in the same spot that I had gotten it in my dream, I still have the scar to prove it.
Lucid dreaming is one of the most interesting topics, honestly, it's amazing. Although, I've never had to deal with the bright painful light. I think that would just freak me out completely and make never want to try again.

Though, I'm doubting Lucid dreaming is a real thing, or rather that it can be induced.
I have had some real feel dreams before.
Anyways, I'll probably never try it, becourse I'm a wimp in this subject.
Might it be real, it would be a fascinating scientific study.
People would want this to have sex all the time,… but if you could use more calculating power from the brain, this would be good to perform research.
@ OP or anyone who claims to do LD…
Do you feel really hungry when you wake up?

It's an awesome feeling to understand that you're in a dream. :D But if you want to do something (like flying), you must convince yourself that you can do it and you must believe that you can do it, otherwise it won't work.

It is intresting to know that some other people have an intrest in lucid dreaming as I have. This is something I have been expierementing with on and off with for a few years now, and I have got into it more recently.
I have had several very profund expierences when going from a deep meditative state and controlling my slow eventual slip into the unconcious realm. I could go into specific detail but at the moment I cannot be bothered to type such a massive wall of text.
What everyone should know is that "Lucid Dreaming" is not necessairly a state in which you have control over your dream, but a "Lucid" dream is simply one which you can recall in varying levels of detail. Sometimes more, sometimes less. With this definition you may be surprised to know that you probably have lucid dreams all the time. Where you are aware to the point that you can recall what was going on, but not aware enough to the point where you can realiaze that you have control over your imiganation. Crossing the barrier of realiazing that you are dreaming (while you are dreaming) is the most tricky part for me. Sometimes it works, other times it does not. Either way I find it amazing that the human mind can have such incredible expierences.
I can attest to the fact that keeping a log or a dream journal is very important when trying to get your mind to recognize that you are dreaming. Often you can remember recurring places or people so that you can more easily recognize the fact that you are dreaming. You should also note that many of that things such as flying and item spawning may come naturally to some, but for most people are very advanced techniques that come only with practice. If you are trying to do something like this that is so out of grasp it can make the expierenced too difficult and you might find yourself awake. The important thing to know is that you should not "try" to lucid dream, instead just go with the flow and you should have intresting results.
Similar to 'caused', several of my first expierences had to do with a screen. Sometimes projected by my eyeballs, sometimes a screen floating in space. It was something similar to a television or a movie theatre, where I was somehow controlling what I viewed on the screen in great detail.
For thoes of you are are intrested in this type of thing in greater detail there are several forums dedicated entirely to lucid dreaming and all the things surrounding it. There is tons and tons of information to read that may prove to be very helpful in your spiritual journey.
This is my favorite website, the Astral Pulse:

Recently I had one where I was swimming through a building but it was just a really complicated pool with rooms an tunnels and it made no sense :p. I realized it didn't make any sense and then I started exploring around and I could swim from the water into the air but only if I was still a few feet above water. It was great. :p
This is so awesome… I want to learn how to do it so bad.
For anyone who can LD:
For my first try, I was too excited to do it, I was awake until I gave up and then fell asleep and dreamt about school. I was AWARE! I knew what was going on. I tried to make my friend hit his head on the desk as some sort of reality check or to see if I could do it, but it didnt work. I tried to make the scenery change, couldn't do it.
Is the fact that I could recall the dream and knew what was going on- let alone attempted something inside a dream, good enough to build on or does this mean I am incapable of LDing?
And do I get any actual sleep during an LD? Or do I wake up feeling like shit as if I was up all night?
Another question: If I were to LD a zombie apocolypse, would I need to control the zombies or could I just tell them to get me?
PM me if you can LD and think you can help. I want to do this so bad.
