Nice, congratulations!

I've been thinking about getting a drivers license when in a year or two.
Just wondering, how much did it cost you?

Awkwardsaw

You guys are kidding, right? Is this in your country only, or what?

Here, in this very fine country, total cost for getting a license is around 30k NOK, or around 6000 USD if 1USD = 5NOK for everything including drivers lessons.

thats a lot of money, :o

in usa, the we just get the permit, learn how to drive on our own(with a parent/ guardian) and in 6 months you go back to get your license if you passed the driving test. almost free to be honest

are driving lessons really necessary? It's quite an easy task to learn to drive.

Ohh, where I live we have defensive driving courses that lower insurance. They are nto very expensive though…30$ at most I would say.

Awkwardsaw

2009-08-06 06:55:17

im taking a behind the wheel class in school to lower the insurance, maybe a defensive driver sometime later haha

Well, isn't there a set of lessons you have to take?
In Norway they have some classes you have to take and get this 'diploma' in order to be able to get the license. One word; expensive.

nope, in America every thing is done by our selves pretty much, other than you have to pass a written test to get your drivers permit, and pass a driving test to get your license.

naw in Iowa, when you turn 14, you go out to the DoM (department of motor-vehicles) office and you take a 25 question test, and you can only miss 4, it is general knowledge, like what is the difference between white lines and yellow lines, and if you pass you have to pay them $5 for the ID (also you can fail up to 4 times before having to pay to take it) but in my case, i just asked all my buddys the questions since they dont bother have a set or a variety to the test, it is always the same order. Then you get your instructional permit where you can drive with DIRECT family only OR people over the age of 25 with parental consent. Then when you turn 16 you take drivers ed (6 week course in high school) and you take a much more difficult written test to get your license which alows you to drive any time between 4:00 AM and 11:00 PM.

I already have my license, so I went through the process of doing all that stuff already. Here in California we have the written test also, which you can take at 15 1/2. Then you take 3 behind-the-wheel sessions and after 6 months of having the permit (and being at least 16), you take an actual driving test to get your license.

Here you can take your test at 14, and then drive with an adult for 2 years(16) and then you can get your license. And if you get your written at 15, you have to only wait a year.

I believe it's changed recently in Kansas, but when I did it I got my permit at 14 after taking the 25 question test. Drove with my parents for a year. Took driver's ed which was a 3 week class to lower insurance. Then went to get my "restricted" license at 15. That allowed me to drive to work and school by myself without a parent. Did that for a year, then at 16 my restricted turned into my Driver's license and I can drive now. But in Kansas, now that it has changed, I think that it starts at age 16 but the steps are the same

@Rubix: DoM? You mean DMV?

Rubix

2009-08-06 20:39:20

yeah DMV, i couldnt think of the name. Also, if you take drivers ed, your insurance gets lowered drastically. I did some research last night, and i found that you can only get a school/work permit if you live ~10 miles from your school and or workplace, so im screwed, as I can walk to school in ~3 minutes and my job (computer store xD) is like 2 miles away.

Bobarkinator

2009-08-07 01:37:33

I live 2 miles from my school and I had one. About the same distance to my work as well.

Also, good grades will lower your insurance.

Driving is easy, its just they teach you the highway code and everything, dealing with congestion, lights etc..

Nice! :)
Here in NL it's freakin expensive to get one: I got one for a moped/scooter, cost me 35 Euro for the exam (50 questions iirc and you can miss 6 (and I missed 6 xD), + 35 Euro for the actual paper. Exam is pretty shit considering 80% fails his/her first time (me and a friend didn't due to good preparation), and is way more than general knowledge :(
Car costs around 2k Euro for the lessons you have to take: theory is also shit (but not that more shit than above I heard), and the practical lessons are also really necessary (examinators are shit, noone I know passed his first two times lol). And you need to be 18.
