This is awesome. I run Ubuntu on my second system, and it would be great to be able to run SCAR on there instead of my main puter. Being a *nix nub I would not have known where to start. Gotta go try this right now.

Okay report back to me if it works or if it doesn't

Sorry for the delay. Took me a while to get Ubuntu up and running in a virtual machine. (I always always always test first in a virtual machine)

Because I'm using a vm, I might roll back to a snap shot and quickly retry this again to see if I can actually get it working.

Edit: Forgot to mention this is a fresh install of Ubuntu 09.04 (Jaunty) with all updates as of today. No other changes/customizations.

I'm guessing you retraced your steps when writing this as some of the folders you mention do not exist when you attempt to manipulate them.

Issues I encountered, roughly in order (sort of):

- (Not really an issue) I prefer to use Package Manager and install Wine, subversion, and Java all in one go. (subversion doesn't show up in Add Programs, but it does in Package Manager) Some users find Package Manager intimidating, so your way works well.

- Using your instructions the install directory winds up being Z:\home\<username>\SCAR 3.21 and as you know spaces in folder names are a pain in the butt in *nix. I used Z:\home\<username>\SCAR.

This next step I ran into multiple issues:
  cd '/home/user/Scar/Includes'
chmod 755 ./srl
cd srl
svn co http://www.villavu.com/repositories/srl-opendev/ srl
svn co http://scardevreflection.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ ./SRL/reflection

- You chmod 755 ./srl before the directory exists

- SRL and Reflection go into 2 different directories: srl and SRL (*nix is case sensitive). Based on the contents of the SRL includes themselves I believe the standard for the capitilization is SRL/SRL/Reflection

- Move plugins to plugins folder?

- Based on all this my actions looked something like this:

cd ~\SCAR\Includes
mkdir SRL
chmod 755 ./SRL
cd SRL
svn co http://www.villavu.com/repositories/srl-opendev/ SRL
cp "SRL/place inside plugins folder/*" ~/SCAR/Plugins
svn co http://scardevreflection.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ ./SRL/Reflection
cp "SRL/Reflection/PLACE INSIDE PLUGINS FOLDER/*" ~/SCAR/Plugins

- Also in order for keywords to bold properly like the Windows version (for looks) you need msttcorefonts(Kudos to Markus for this one). Taken from another thread: http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48892
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

- There is a newer version of the windows version of java available: http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=33232

And after all that I can't actually run SCAR. It runs fine until I click on the menus. As soon as I click on a menu SCAR crashes and generates an error report.

Ah well. Wouldn't be any fun if it worked the first time…;)

I still think this is a good guide. I'm a complete nub when it comes to *nix and this pointed in the right direction every step of the way. It just needs a little tidying up.

It did occur to me you could do this entire procedure from the gui, never dropping to the command line. Not once.

You could also put all steps into an easy to run script that does everything automagically. A nice thing to include at the end, after you explain what needs to be done and why you are doing it?

Speaking of which what is the intended purpose of the chmod in there? (Like I said I'm a complete nub)

I agree, I updated my tutorial.

- Using your instructions the install directory winds up being Z:\home\<username>\SCAR 3.21 and as you know spaces in folder names are a pain in the butt in *nix. I used Z:\home\<username>\SCAR.

Just rename your scar folder to one word, I made mine Scar and it works fine.

- You chmod 755 ./srl before the directory exists

It creates the directory SRL and gives it 755 permission so that it can do an svn checkout there

- SRL and Reflection go into 2 different directories: srl and SRL (*nix is case sensitive). Based on the contents of the SRL includes themselves I believe the standard for the capitilization is SRL/SRL/Reflection

It installs reflection into the correct directory.

- Move plugins to plugins folder?

Thank you, Added that too.

- Also in order for keywords to bold properly like the Windows version (for looks) you need msttcorefonts
Thanks again, added this in.

- There is a newer version of the windows version of java available: http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=33232

Yeah but I cannot be bothered to change the link every time it updates so I just made a direct link to the download page.

And after all that I can't actually run SCAR. It runs fine until I click on the menus. As soon as I click on a menu SCAR crashes and generates an error report.

Yeah I have to agree with you on that one that scar is a bit buggy I wrote Until( and when i typed out ( scar crashed on me. After I sent the error report it wanted me to send another. then another then another until I had to force quit it.

You could also put all steps into an easy to run script that does everything automagically.

I think you mean automatically. I am sure it can be done. I'll think about that

It's me again Margaret! (You're too young to get the reference most likely)

[OFFTOPIC]Google "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" - You'll thank me[/OFFTOPIC]

Finally got some "me time" to give this another go with your updated instructions. This time I actually behaved and followed your instructions exactly to the letter.

Actually I ran through it twice. Second time around "I did it my way" (Again too young?) to streamline the process a bit.

Guide is starting to look very good. Still some minor issues:

The first time through I grabbed the packages in the order you specified and how you specified. The second time through I grabbed everything through Package Manager at once to save time. Both ways work.

the chmod does not create the directory and change permissions. It fails because the directory does not exist. You have to create it first.

Do not change into srl before issuing your first svn command. If you do you wind up with srl/srl/srl (one level too deep).

On a side note tried letting SCAR download SRL (works on Windows) it created the SRL folder but all the subfolders got created as text documents (ugh) and the move plugins of course failed since they weren't there. But the directory did have the correct permissions.

You mention copying the plugins from srl, but not the plugins from reflection (the reflection aware smart.dll)

And…(this one not your fault) the includes file paths are case sensitive but the includes are all over the map: Some are uppercase, some lowercase, some a mix. So nothing compiles that uses SRL and/or Reflection because it can't find the include files. Sloppy windows scripters

I tried compiling the Compile SRL.scar and CompileReflection.scar scripts - neither compile. Guess it's time for some heavy duty search and replace across all scripts.:)

Oh and some the icons on the SCAR toolbar are messed up. They are there but have no text/icon. If you mouse over them the hint pops up, but they aren't visible.

Edit: My bad - Instead of graying out when inactive like they do in windows they become invisible under Ubuntu.

Think thats it this time around…

If you're getting sick of me nitpicking the details tell me to shut up and I'll go away. Just really like to see a complete accurate guide on here for a change.

Edit: Almost forgot: inc(Rep);

You have to manually move the plugins from the SRL folder that says "PLACE THESE PLUGIN FOLDER" or something like that. It will work after that
