Do not trust Bobng

cycrosism

2009-07-21 10:28:40

If he gives you a script or anything do not run them do not trust him also do not give him any passwords or usernames for any accounts (wether it be runescape or something else) because he wanted me to test this "Python server" for him and he lied to me. So I ran the python server after it "initialised" my screen flashed white and I lost icons on my desktop I quickly restarted my computer and got grub error 15 (THANKS A LOT ASSHOLE) i booted off the CD and i browsed into my /home/mark to find no files there. I lost all my homework that is due tommorow that I spent all night on. DOUCHEBAG. I sent him an angry forum PM too.

DO NOT TRUST HIM!!! If he ever tells you to run a script of his tell him to GTFO and ignore him/block him because this isn't the first time I have heard of him doing something malicious. (There was another incident where Harry gave him a MYSQL username and password and he put a forkbomb on it)

Also, do not reply to this post if you are going to say something stupid like "You shouldn't of run the script, noob". I will just hate you if you do.

I will be on tomorow I have A LOT of homework to do. Bye.

Also, he pastebinned me the script. I will try my best to recover it (I will try to access my router/modem and view my history) to show someone here who can tell me what it does

maybe his script malfunctioned? it was a test after all right? Not defending him really, just listing possibilities….don't even know it's possible? lol could be, but I doubt it.

I called my dad, he is in a meeting when he gets out he will help me look through my history using our switch/router/modem whatever. I am going to find that script and I will show my dad as well. He knows a lot of programming languages

good luck getting info back if possible, and good luck recovering the script. It'd be nice to see what exactly it did…

I Seriously doubt that a malfunction will remove all my files and remove my GRUB loader so that I cannot boot from my disk. It would of removed much more but I restartd my computer but I was unable to recover anything (from my harddrive at least, still working on getting that script when I finish my homework).

The Claw

2009-07-21 11:01:38

That sucks man. Don't do anything on that hard drive, you should be able to run some recovery program if you attach it as an external drive to another computer and get your shit back.

I doubt it too, but it's semi possible, if the stars align, on a Tuesday, in June, on a leap year, with a full moon….during a Saturn eclipse…maybe?

There was no way to recover any of it. I booted of the ubuntu CD and over half (MAYBE EVEN MORE) of my files were gone. Even files in the system folder and in other critical folders were missing. I already installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu on that drive.

I'm wondering why you had homework, but maybe you have school when I have summer.

Try to be more careful when running things your unsure of, and I hope you can get all your stuff back.

Anyways i don't care tbh, and i don't even know Bong or bobng or whatever :p.

Brain

2009-07-21 11:09:30

the files aren't "gone" most likely registered as deleted, not written over, yet. Computers just ignore deleted files until you write over them. and there are programs that can recover deleted files. That is what the claw meant.

cycrosism

2009-07-21 11:09:46

It is summer in America but winter in australia. When it is summer here it will be winter there

Oh, I tried to do "SHOW HIDDEN FILES", no result.

Brain

2009-07-21 11:11:33

they are more hidden than that, you need a special program designed for recovering deleted files.

cycrosism

2009-07-21 11:13:59

To late to recover my homework, best option I have now is to redo it. There is still a chance i can recover the script

Ignorance is not an excuse - you knew Bobng had a malicious past and you blindly ran what you did not know. It doesn't make what Bobng did right, but it does make it pretty funny for me.

Oh, also I'm fairly sure Python would only be able to delete root files if you ran it as sudo, which is never a clever thing to do. I may be wrong, but I believe this is accurate.

cycrosism

2009-07-21 11:20:37

I only found out about his past when I did a search for "Bobng" on the forums (and that was just when I logged in about an hour ago)

The Claw

What Brain said. Assuming that you reformatted the drive the ubuntu would be installed over the old ubuntu files (most likely), so most of your old files should still be there. When something gets deleted, it doesn't actually get physically removed from your hard drive, the code is still there - its just the sector gets different attributes, so your computer ignores it and writes over it when theres new stuff to do. tl;dr you should be able to get nearly all of your files back still.

cycrosism

2009-07-21 12:01:31

Just found out I am unable to recover the script too.

Lance

2009-07-21 12:02:56

damn :S sorry man. but yeah try one of those delited file programs. it worked alittle for me.. if you just dont touch anythinig or let the computer over write your files it should be able to find them

cycrosism

Brain

2009-07-21 12:28:24

read post 21, ALL of it, you can still get lots of files back even though you reinstalled ubuntu! but w/e, you're worked up, and have you mind set on already having lost everything, calm down, and read what he actually wrote.

Da 0wner

2009-07-21 12:33:32

Obvious ignorance is obvious -_-.

So what if you reinstalled it? You can still retrieve the files back (most likely).

Oh dear. This is the last time I will say this, you can ignore it again if you want, but….YOU CAN GET MOST OF YOUR FILES BACK.

cycrosism

As many people have said before, you can still recover the stuff that hasn't been written over yet, as when you delete something it's just marked as "unused" or something in the harddrive, and will exist there until it's written over.

E: Wat, i pressed tab+something and this got auto-posted.. >_> .. Oh yeah, and that's pretty much the reason you should always make sure if you're throwing away a harddrive that you drill a hole or just break it some other way, because even if you reformat it's very possible for someone who happens to get a hold on that harddrive to recover the files and you might not want that :p

cycrosism

2009-07-21 14:23:42

It does not matter anymore. I already redid the work.

edit - instead of drilling a hole in it you could just shred the drive so people cant recover it

I don't think it's deleted only re-writed.
You can literally kill memory by re-writing it 50 times over.

Permanently?

Yeah forever. Only just realized.

Anyway, on the subject of the script, here is where you went wrong:

1. You ran it as sudo - Why?
2. When you asked what it was I said it was a "server thingy for IRC". Thats a dumb answer. Why continue?
3. The script had an error in it. It spewed out a traceback (A list of the last lines run in a script) which was FULL of the word "rm" (remove)
Infact this was the error:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "server.py", line 4, in <module>
shutil.rmtree('/')
File "/localhome/raghu/localwork/cpython/python/Lib/shutil.py", line
194, in rmtree
onerror(os.rmdir, path, sys.exc_info())
File "/localhome/raghu/localwork/cpython/python/Lib/shutil.py", line
192, in rmtree
os.rmdir(path)
OSError: [Errno 1] Cannot remove file /dev/something'
Why did you send me the error message and wait for me to fix it?

Hey Bobng was wondering when you'd be back. It doesn't matter that cycrosism is a noob and ran your script, he decided to trust you and you abused that trust.

You still shouldn't trust that exe. For all you know I could have put evil code in the exe that I didn't reflect in the source code. Anyways, just like what other people have said in this thread, cycrosism should have looked at the source first and made sure he understood it, however Bobng should not have done this. He somewhat did that same to me, I wasn't running sudo but meh. Essentially I had a python IRC bot that did evals, and he did an rmtree through shutil. The only thing that I lost, however, was that IRC bot.
