Is there a way to make infractions ananymous?

I've had a few people bothering me, asking me if I'm ssrl. And when I say no (which I really hate to lie when I don't have to anyways), they ask how I infracted them. What am I supposed to say to that? It sort of seems like a silly thing for us to have a moderating power that shows we are obviously in a higher group then srl members if we are trying to keep who is ssrl secret.

I was thinking that if there was a way to hide who gives out infractions from the user then we could remain more of a secret.

If not, then maybe we shouldn't be allowed to infract, but instead be able to help the mods/admins out by doing something more anonymous? Like closing threads or moving threads or changing thread titles or something. I don't know.

Any ideas?

Meh, I really don't see a reason why SSRL is tried to be kept so secret.

The infraction thing is quite counter productive for secrecy though.

Exactly.

And SSRL was originally a secret so people wouldn't try to better the community just to get noticed for a new position.

Some people know that when you infract them that you are SSRL. A few weeks ago, I gave NaumanAhqlaQ a warning for his sig being too long, and in reply he said "Gratz on SSRL <3".

I agree with there being an option for it being anonymous, so the PM comes from SRL or some other account that no-one owns.

That's what I told Bullzeye when he switched to a bigger avatar ;)

If you wanna stay 'undercover' you don't want one of the preset avatars…

If there isn't a way to make them anonymous, anyone who infracts needs to be able to ignore people sucking up to them, or asking for leaks.

Obviously we have probably all been doing that, but I still just don't understand why we were given one of the only moderating powers that cannot be anonymous. We were given these powers to help take some of the work load off of the staff I assume. And SSRL is supposed to be a secret. If infractions cause us to not be a secret any more, then I do not see why infractions are the way we help the staff instead of a different power (Even just allowing us to close threads in the appliance section instead of infractions would be a big relief for mods and admins. Then applications could be closed before flaming starts too etc..).

I'm just confused why we are supposed to keep our position a secret, yet we are given the one power that is extremely counter productive to keeping our position a secret. We are all capable of not leaking things and not being sweet talked into nominating members if people figure out we are SSRL.

SSRL was originally made a secret so that people wouldn't start contributing just to get noticed for SSRL. Now everyone knows about this new group though. So why are we still kept a secret? I am sure most of us don't need the extra attention, but infracting people creates that attention anyways.

Maybe we could make an account that we all have the password to use that we could infract people with? Idk, this would be inconvenient though.

Originally there were 2 secrets: the existence of the group, and the identities of the members. SSRL Member identities* are(I guess 'were' now these powers have been added) kept a secret so that people would not know who to suck up to, who to copycat, who to try to keylog/phish/whatever, or who to ask for leaks etc. It's less to worry about that way. To be honest I don't know who decided to give these powers or why, but I'm assuming they also decided that the cost of having to worry about these things would be worth the benefit of the powers. So unless there is a way to make it anonymous, I guess the responsibility is left up to you guys on an individual basis: anyone that can handle the costs can make use of the benefit without being anonymous.

*The existence of the group was also kept secret so that people would not even try to find out those identities.

Well, from what I've heard, SSRL is a step between SRL Members and moderators (or devs), and the idea of infractions could be to prove that you would be capable of punishing people in the correct way.

And also to make the mod/admin's jobs easier.

Yeah. When the powers were first released, we were allowed to close and move threads too, but that got removed. I think though that if one of those powers to be removed, it should have been infractions because they kind of ruin the secret of us being SSRL.

Well infractions were the most subtle, as when you move/close a thread, you normally state it (and sometimes why), meaning it is seen by everyone. While infractions is just one single person. And (hate to be harsh to them) a lot of people who receive infractions are Jnr. Mems and below, who will just assume it is an SRL Member privilege.

Yeah, closing/moving/deleting threads seems way more subtle.

That would be a lot of moderating power, but even if we just traded infractions for being able to close/move/delete threads in (a) certain section(s), such as the appliance section. That way, SSRL members could remain completely anonymous, we could still help out the staff, and we can prevent flaming in the appliance section by closing threads quickly.

Infractions just seem like the least productive moderating power to give us considering the circumstances.

Is it really neccessary for SSRL to be able to move/close threads? We seem to have it covered already.

Is it necessary for us to be able to infract? Just us needing to remain a secret but needing to pretty much tell people that we are SSRL when infracting them doesn't make much sense to me. I just think that a change should be made. If the staff has it covered, then there's really no point to us giving our position away by infracting then. If the staff wants some help from us (which I assume is why we were given the powers?), then I think that infracting is the wrong power.

From: The Claw
sweet, should be good to help get rid of spam :p how do we close threads? i cant see a button or anything

Edit:
From: JAD
But the difference between closing threads and giving infractions is that people can't see who closed the threads.

From: Smartzkid
Wait…opening and closing, there's no names given (assuming nobody goes around 'Closed!', etc). Infracting, it tells the infracted who infracted them.

Thus wouldn't it be better for us to be able to open and close and not infract?

EDIT: Ehh, that's what JAD just said, isn't it… w/e :p

From: Bobarkinator
Thats what I thought when I first read this thread. Newly registered users wouldn't really know the difference, but SRL members could definitely find out.

Me, Smartzkid, and Bob actually asked this same question a year and a half ago with no response:p

It's true that SSRL were given infraction powers to help out the staff, but at that time we had next to no active mods (yakman, sumillion, tara and thats maybe it). Now we have me, ray, markus, zeph, RM, Hobbit, and Wizzup. And giving out infractions is more a matter of judgement than anything, usually when a thread needs to be closed someone reports it/asks for it to be closed, its pretty much a black and white issue, so the more people there are determining whether or not something is worthy of an infraction the better. I guess the infraction powers were to help catch anyone who might "slip through the net", which was probably a problem at the time. It's not really a matter of just helping the staff, it's more helping where help is needed.

That makes sense. There's just gotta be a way to keep our names a secret while being able to give out infractions though… *thinks*

You just use Wizzup's old excuse. "Experimental Mod".
