Windows XP or Ubuntu 9.04?

Hello all! :)

First of all, this thread isn't meant to start a "Which is better" debate… or is it?

Anyway, I've grown tired of my laptop not being able to handle half of what I want to do on it. There is so much crap on it, that I don't think it's worth trying to uninstall it all.

I have a live CD of both XP and Ubuntu, and I'm asking you which I should install. Keep in mind that I have used Windows my whole life, with a little bit of Ubuntu, but not much.

My laptop specs:

Ram: 1 GB
Hard Drive: 80 GB
Processor: 2.00 GHZ

I'm not 100% positive on those specs, but it's around there. I'll be able to get the exact specs when I get back to my cottage (Where my laptop is :p).

So cast your vote!

I would like to know which you think would run better on my computer, and also if it can run SCAR/SMART well. Also, I would like to know why you chose XP/Ubu.

Thanks! :D

EDIT: I should say that I don't plan on duel booting, it's going to be all XP or all Ubu.

Well of course Ubu would run better on your computer. Wine can be used to run SCAR. I am not sure how stable that is though. And I voted Windows XP (but are you experienced with Ubuntu?).

Scar 3.20 gets access violations out the ass, but 3.15 works like a charm. All you need is to copy over the font files from windows.

Ubuntu can be quite the learning curve. There is less support of Ubuntu than Windows, (although XP support is discontinued) but the Ubuntu community is also very experienced and helpful.

I guess it depends on what you use your computer for. Windows is good for almost everything. Even though Ubuntu has wine, many softwares will not work perfectly on Ubuntu.

That's why I'm skeptical to install Ubu, because pretty much all the programs I use require Windows, and I doubt Wine can support them all. Although, I'm sure Ubu has a program equivalent or better.

The main thing I'm looking for is speed. I want my computer to be fast, but also have a good Word Processor with a good PowerPoint program. I know Ubu comes with OO, but I don't know exactly how good it is. Currently I use MO 2007.

I say XP for three reasons:
1. Since you're using a laptop, you probably use wireless internet. In general, wireless support on Ubuntu absolutely sucks. I have never gotten nearly as good a signal on Ubuntu as I have on XP, and I have tried it with multiple computers. I can't even get my wireless adapter that I have now to work on Ubuntu from about 30 ft. away from the router. It connects for about 10 seconds max, and then disconnects for however long it feels like.
2. SCAR/SMART will run slower. Wine's a great program, but it's not as fast as native Windows. If you want to run the max amount of SCARs/SMARTs, use Windows.
3. If you plan on gaming at all (which I doubt, since you're on a laptop, but I'm still throwing this out there), use XP.

You pretty much just made my decision for me, although I'd like to hear what other people think of your points.

There's also another question I have. I'm pretty sure I'm screwed, but you never know. I bought MO 2007 and it came with 3 licenses, and I've used all three. If I uninstalled MO on my laptop, would I be able to reinstall after I installed XP?

EDIT: Also the Live CD of XP I have is for SP1, can any confirm that I'll be able to update to the latest one without issues?

Ubuntu. If it runs sluggish, download the Ubuntu-Alt-Server CD. It will start up and install without a GUI. Now, if you want a GUI [which I am sure you would want], once it is loaded up with the terminal,

`sudo apt-get install xfce4'

Now, once that is done,

`startx'

Now you will have the lightest GUI for Ubuntu, and your PC should go quite teh quick. Personally, I prefer GNOME with the ClearLooks theme, but it is a lot fatter than XFCE.

Add me on MSN (msg me your username so I do not accidentally deny you …) and I can help you with any small bugs you happen to get.

[or if you are lazy and non-daring, you can download the xubuntu LiveCD, but I liek my way better]

Well I was leaning toward XP from what Bullzeye said, but now I don't know. And I was planning on using OO if I couldn't get MO back, I'll try unactivating it, thanks. :)

The poll is pretty even right now, I want to wait for more votes before I make a decision. Also, does anyone have anything against what bullzeye said about the wireless internet? Because I'm rarely not using wireless, so that would be a huge factor in my decision.

Get get Ubuntu, a lot of people here are Winblows users, so of course they are going to chose their dominate OS instead of one they have never used, yet is a lot easier in my opinion.

Who would you trust?
Me, IceFire908, mixster, Nava2, Nazgand, Rubix, Shuttleu, Widget, Yakman
or:
bullzeye95, Da 0wner, Pure1993, Quickmarch, sapetto, Torrent of Flame?

;)

Oh, and bullzeye, Wireless works fine for me on Ubuntu. It is a lot more stable than how it was on my Windows box; Windows box would always die out every 5 minutes, a lot of GET requests would not work after using torrents, etc. It is very fail, and Ubuntu has worked a lot better for it. Of course, eth0 > wlan.

I do. He exaggerated a bit. Most of the time, wireless cards do work, but he was still right about the signal usually being noticeably weaker in Ubuntu. Wireless still does completely suck in Ubuntu though.. depending on how lucky you are, it could take quite a while to get it connected the first time. After that, it's reasonably good at auto-connecting (though not nearly as good/easy as Windows IMO).

Also, Markus liezz. Try running a script or two on Windows (not more, because then it might not be a fair test), and then pop in the live CD and try the same scripts under wine. If you can't tell a difference, then maybe wine is good enough. It's not a very good test though, as when you're running a live CD, you're pretty limited on RAM, so the CPU might not be bottlenecking anywhere with only a couple scripts running.
In my experiences, SCAR runs quite a bit smoother under XP.

EDIT: Harry, I'd use Ubuntu most of the time if I could get my damn wireless adapter to work. It likes to drop over 9000 packets, and then just die for a while…

If your computer can handle GNOME pretty well (my 2GHz with 1GB RAM computer runs it fine) you can make it look really nice.

http://www.dividebyzerochan.org/images/Screenshot.png
http://www.dividebyzerochan.org/images/Screenshot-1.png

You just have to remember to install compizconfig-settings-manager. Also, Add/Remove Programs is much better than the windows "look for the website then download the installer then virus scan it then install it" method

http://www.dividebyzerochan.org/images/screenshot4.png

Ubuntu is also the midway point between Vista's paranoia and XP's "I'll let you do everything regardless of who you are."

Also, the only time you need to restart Ubuntu is when you install graphics card drivers or update your kernel (and even then, you don't really need to reboot if you know how, but that's complicated :p)

Edit: I use a 50ft ethernet cable and I use my second ethernet port to bridge the connection to my server, so I can't really say anything for wireless.

If you are looking for speed, then go with MO 2007. (OO is quite the memory eater, your laptop will be a little slow running multiple OO documents.) In addition, it takes forever to get it started, especially open office draw.

In addition to just MSWord, you also have Onenote 2007 with MO.

But as someone already pointed out, using wine will likely slow down applications than in native windows. So Windows for speed. I still think you should consider Dual-boot, at least for a little while…to see which one you prefer. "Especially since Ubuntu is free."

Yeah, well when I was talking to Shut, he suggested booting from the live CD just to see if it works, which I think is a good idea, so I might try that.

So throughout this discussion I'm come up with these questions/conclusions.

1: Wireless internet shouldn't be a problem.
2: Is running a Windows app slower through Wine, than in regular Windows?
3: For overall speed, Windows or Ubuntu?

I have Vista now, and my computer can't handle it. It always freezes, I get tons of errors, and I can't barely run SMART without massive lag.

EDIT: I'm running off the Live CD now, and obviously I had no trouble connecting to Wireless so that's good. :D

You have got to be trolling. Honestly, if you think that XP (with the latest security updates, of course) has more bugs than Vista…you need to get institutionalized.

And yes, Wireless etc should work fine.
I see no reason why you would even WANT to run Windows programs on Ubuntu; there are many better alternatives of *NIX.
If you do want to use WINE (which I only use for WinRAR, I like it better than the Ubutntu Unrarer), then check out this list for your app. http://appdb.winehq.org/

You can't blame anyone for that. People still think Java is slow even though it's only barely slower than native bytecode now. Vista also has a cluttered, confusing, disorganized, and slow user interface (and personally I think it's just plain ugly as well). Everyone's in love with Win7 only because it's not Vista.

WINE runs like 80% of programs. You can run a wine program from the terminal and see any output – which is good, as most program errors are simply a missing DLL. So you download the DLL and off you go.

Yes, I have tried it and it didn't work. However I think I figured out a couple days ago that the reason it's not working is because I'm running Ubuntu x64, and there are no x64 drivers that work with ndiswrapper. So one of these days I'm gonna wipe my existing installation and install x84 Ubuntu.

This guy is totally right. I tested both OS and there's nothing on linux that you can't do with windows (at least for a medium experienced user like me). On the other hand, there are lots of things that lunix leaks of.(Eg: the ability to run SCAR propperly).

with a VM and tinyXP you can run scar flawlessly (thats what i do). As another said, some versions of scar have more problems in WINE than others.

customization is something you can do with linux to a much higher degree than windows. for example, on my top tab i have icons representing each processor, which i can under/over clock with at any time with 2 clicks. (thats not much, but im not big with customizing my gui, it works as is)

I would like to discuss this, because your statement s just false. First of all, it is not Linux's fault that SCAR is written for Windows only.
Furthermore, there is ALOT that you cannot do on windows, but can on Linux.
Examples: Bash and Terminals, Program a GUI without a WinAPI that comes straight from hell, Inject Packets, Program with vim and an up to date gcc, Use your computer without the big issue of virusses (which also saves a lot of CPU, btw), multiple desktops, enjoy epic desktop effects with compiz, enjoy free software only, enjoy the overall freedom of your system, you can tweak it as much as you want, enjoy multiple pointers, and generally enjoying a stable environment.

Just my opinion, though. :)

TRENDnet TEW-424UB

I booted into an x86 live CD, and it seems to be better. I have the same connection (40-50%), but not nearly as many packets dropped/complete outages, and that was without ndiswrapper. I think I will install x86 over my existing partition when I get back from vacation.

That looks like quite exotic hardware. :p
But yea, it seems to work now? :)

Is this true? :p Because that's kinda funny if it is. I've had my laptop on for almost 8 months now ^^ (I put it to sleep though, so I guess it's kinda different.. and it's on Vista.. but still! :p).

Considering LUnix is for the Commodore 64, I would expect it to struggle to run Scar at all. However, I do agree that if you are to compare Windows to another OS, it should be on the same level of which the two are on equalish grounds in most areas.
