The use of pornorgraphy to masturbate. Harmful to the psyche.

Do you guys think that using porn to masturbate will create unrealistic fantasies and expectations that is harmful to the psyche?

Btw, let's not debate about the moral/religious aspect of masturbation. Let's just talk about using porn as a tool to masturbate. (For this debate's sake, let's just say masturbation is a necessary activity for one's survival.)

Personal opinion:
I think personally that porn can lead to addiction because of masturbation. The chemicals released (in the brain) would cause humans to experience pleasure through masturbation. Thus, associating porn with pleasure. I wouldn't have a problem with this, if it wasn't because of the content of porn. Like any addiction, more is needed to create the same high, which would eventually drive the user to seek something so far apart from reality that he or she would become disillusioned, or worse discontent with life.

The text in quote is irrelevant, read this if you are really bored.

I fear that in pursuing the images inside the computer, people will miss the beauty in the ordinary, and the magic in the struggle in everyday life.

I asked this question because one of my friend, after watching transformers, said that Megan Fox is not hot!

I started to think about what he said. (my view of Megan Fox did not change) But I felt kind of sick.

It was a Malcolm X moment for me: When he suddenly realizes that he got played by society.

Anyway, I posted this here because I was pleasantly surprised at the mature and insightful comments in the thread about sex. I was hoping some of you could share on the subject question.

Here it is again if you forgot: Do you guys think that using porn to masturbate will create unrealistic fantasies and expectations that is harmful to the psyche?

I have talked to a psychologist about this and he said that extended use will lower the stimulus of other good things in life. Like winning awards or accomplishing life's goals. He also said that people go to porn/masturbation to give them feel good and get rid of life's worries. This will have the same effect as drugs as it is a chemical reaction in the brain. Take this how you will.(some people don't care about taking hard drugs and etc.)

how about just masturbate without porn?

I am thinking about reading erotic stuff…would that be any different than porn. I mean with text, I feel I don't get brainwashed by the images…

I have an adult friend who (as an adolescent adult) would masturbate to pornography. It became a habit. When he got married, later in life, he was unable to get the 'pleasure' of having sex with his wife; after they would have sex, he would have to later look at porn and masturbate to it… just to get to sleep. He eventually told his wife and with her support he was able to curb his addiction. Once he had been weaned away from pornography/masturbation, he was able to enjoy sex and learn many new things with his wife. He also experienced more joy in life. (not needing a dopamine high derived from masturbation)

Sex (or making love. Whatever you prefer to say, it's the same act, just for different reasons) <> masturbation/pornography. It's not wrong to masturbate to sex, because that's what you're thinking about, isn't it? And the people get paid to do it. That's there job, they know what people do when they watch it.

And masturbating (especially with pornography) is completely different from sex, which is why guys do it so often (even if they have sex).

Looking at porn usually means looking at someone attractive. Attractive people trigger hormones, which leads to desire, and a need to satisfy it. Therefore masturbating to porn makes porn a tool. Tools are also often used, and needs to be regularly "maintained"… so it eventually (or quickly) will become addiction and a regular "need".

but to your question: it only depends what you mean by "harmful". Will someone become violent? probably not. Will they become dependent on it and it change their life? possibly.

I think that there is an addictive property to masterbation.

I think it derives from how freakishly available pornography is though.

I once read a paper about this.. wonder if I can dig it up..

Why spend a longer time masturbating without porn, when you can get "… PROFIT!" completed faster with pornography? Honestly. Why strain your wrists?

Also, about the person having less reaction when having sex with their wife ………. that is a GOOD thing. Most guys ejaculate way too soon for the woman to get much pleasure out of the sex. The longer you sex her [ie, the longer it takes you to ejaculate], the better it will feel for her, and even for you.

tl;dr, looking at porn has no negative physical value, only "moral", if you will.

Pornography itself is abberative (Comes from the word abberation, which means departure from rational thought or behavior; not sane.)

It is also addictive, and can cause abberations in people watching it.

Yes I think it is harmful to the "psyche", or, one's reactive mind. (If you don't know what that is ask me if you want through a pm. I don't want to explain it now- it could take a while)

Though there's nothing wrong with masturbating without the use of pornography.

Pornography is not aberrative, it is educational, and watching it is not going to make you any more "insane" than watching TV shows, animes, movies, etc.

ANYTHING in life can be considered "addictive".

How exactly is it bad for your mind? Unless your mind is too easily breached by "entertainment", watching pornographic movies is not bad for you. This is why they are made 18+, as responsible adults can realize the difference between entertainment and real life.

There is nothing wrong with using pornography to masturbate, either.

Educational?
Sex-Ed is educational.
The pornography you find on the internet these days is NOT. Perhaps if you had never seen genitalia before and are completely ignorant to their functions, it might be educational for about 5 minutes. Other then that it is a person leering at a computer screen while pleasuring themselves.

I don't know what kind of super-prude pornography you're talking about but some of the stuff out there is completely f**ed up and it is aberrative.

Eh I really don't want to explain the entire concept of why it's bad for your mind, so I'm going to recommend a book for you to read that pretty much explains the entire function of the mind: Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard. It's a tough read so make sure to look up your words ;)

Note, just because someone is 18+ does not make the responsible…or an adult… "It is just a way for the government to openly recognize humans coming to an age where they can be drafted and taxed"… as some would say…

As expected from this forum, great comments.

It's not wrong to masturbate to sex, because that's what you're thinking about, isn't it?

So you are saying that since people masturbate to sex, it would be the same to masturbate to looking at sex versus thinking about it. I can see your point, I am sure alot of people watch porn and masturbate and later masturbate to the memories of the same scene they watched.

However, you can't control on what is shown to you in a movie, as opposed to a greater flexibly in imagination land. However I want to ask you, (anyone for that matter can answer too). Is the mix of the content of porn and the euphoria from masturbation harmful?

Pornography is not aberrative, it is educational, and watching it is not going to make you any more "insane" than watching TV shows, animes, movies, etc.

Good point. There are some crazy anime out, way more violent and graphic than porn. However, the question is the same as above. Is the combination of an euphoria and porn dangerous.

Imagine feeling the same euphoria while listening to your professor's/teacher's lectures. If that was the case, I wouldn't have to teach myself everything.

my point is, the euphoria would encourage the same behavior. However, what kind of behavior would that be and is that behavior harmful. If so…what can we do about it.

I think my next point tie in to one of my questions to this gentleman's comment
Looking at porn usually means looking at someone attractive. Attractive people trigger hormones, which leads to desire, and a need to satisfy it.

I wonder if this sentence is in the correct order. What if it was arranged differently: (a classical conditioning, like Pavlov's dogs)

The physical act of masturbation is paired with the girls in porn. What if the attractiveness came second?
Supposedly, Inuit guys like Inuit girls a little huskier, for obvious survival reasons. Are we damned to pursue the same girls in porn. I understand that the media/advertisers already try to convince us of who is beautiful and who is not. But watching commercials
does not give a high. Did the porn industry under pretense to give us a "tool to help us" really made us dependent on the materials they provide? As someone already pointed out…

When he got married, later in life, he was unable to get the 'pleasure' of having sex with his wife; after they would have sex, he would have to later look at porn and masturbate to it… just to get to sleep.

What does aberrative mean? As in not normal?

Thank you for the recommendation, I appreciate the thoughtfulness. However, I am more of a logical positivist.

No. I frequently masturbate to pornography, but I have had and enjoyed sex.

I think it works on a level of if you think sex is like it is in a pornographic movie then you will not enjoy it, I suppose. It is all about whether or not you base your sexual fantasies on Porn or not.

And can someone enjoy and masturbate to porn and not base sexual fantasies on it? meaning, they wouldn't daydream scenes from porn.

If you're going to classify porn as addictive due to the dopamine and other chemicals released then eating, hanging out with friends, watching a good tv show, going on the internet etc are all addictive too, as they also trigger the release of dopamine and other chemicals in your brain. Some people do get addicted to it…but thats not the main reason people are agaisnt it.

I think the main argument agaisnt porn is it gives men unrealistic expectations of what their girlfriend/wife can do, by this I mean if someone saw heaps and heaps of porn with anal sex in it, it would become the norm for him and would expect his wife to have it, enjoy it, and make all the noises etc the pornstars do. Along with the fact it (supposedly) degrades women.

It is only unrealistic if you make it so. Chances are a person would have unrealistic expectations with or without porn.

More harmful is the general lack of knowledge and then watching porn.

I do watch porn yet i still enjoy sex with my girlfriend.
I believe that porn leads to more twisted fantasies and stuff tho'.

In the 70's when kids couldn't see porn easily, a blowjob was as hardcore as a 4some analorgy today.

Frequent masturbation in adolescence prevents incontinence of urine when you're old.
It's also good to the heart.

Yes. If you think sex in real life will be like it is in a porno, then you won't enjoy it because your expectations will be very high and you will think 'This isnt like my fantasies' therefor you wont enjoy it.

Yes. I daydream porno scenes but I know when I have sex that it wont be like it is in a pornographic movie.

my personal experiences show that irl sexlife can be pornmovie-like ^^ girls aren't always as 'nice' as they seem to be…
im not talking about 4some analorgies but regular straight-1-on-1 movies

I dont think its bad. It all Really Depends on how you take in what your watching. Maturity has alot to do with that. Because if your not mature at all and you think everything you see in a tv show is how life is supposed to be, imagine if you watched porn..
