RC cars / anything thread

Well, I've been into RC items since I was a tiny little child.
and since I was going to have money for the summer a bought myself a Traxxas Slash RC truck, got it yesterday, and got in 2 runs today on it.

and it is AWESOME

Anyone else got any *quality* rc vehicles?

I'm sure I'll be uploading some videos some time VERY soon, I guess there is an old small track here that I'm going to hit tomorrow.
I also have a decent RC boat that I rarely use anymore, but it's still cool to have.

edit: took some pics:

and this is a short vid we made, keep in mind, the battery is getting pretty weak in the video, and there is NO battery in the pictures.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgjTTBihlh4

I paid $205 for it, a 7.2v 3000mAh battery, and a crappy charger.
(good price just for the truck, battery is a plus, charger is trash)

Next I'm going to buy an $80 charger, and I just bought 2 extra batteries, another 6 cell 4200 mAh, and a 7 cell 4200mAh.

I'd say on this batt freshly charged it goes at least 20mph. I can probably get at least another 5 outta the 7 cell battery.

I'll upload a vid after breakfast.

As for the upgrading Narcle, in due time. I'm kinda broke now…but I can't wait to go brushless.

I've been wanting to do it with my Rustler (old Traxxas). I have a amazing speed controller in it right now, it can handle up to 32 cells (iirc). Eventually I would like to try it with a brush-less 4-6 turn motor.

Did u see that video where they used a 2 turn brush-less motor with 32 cells. It went 115mph (idk the kph).

Brain

2009-06-24 23:25:34

lol, wow, 32 cells? thats crazy huge. Mines just lame old stock for now…but when I get the money I'll be upgrading stuff. Here's the vids of me messin around at the track:

Ooh, traxxas :) Eww, batteries :(

I've got a revo 3.3, but it's not in running order right now.. my bro ran it *a bit* lean; the piston locked up, the crankshaft exploded, etc, etc. New engine please?

Nice set of wheels though, what's your top speed?

Brain

2009-06-25 19:44:13

I think stock with a 6 cell it goes 23mph with the smaller pinion gear (don't remember what size, just what I read online)
It also came with a street pinion, its a little larger, so it'll go faster. Also, waiting on my 7 cell pack, which will also make it faster! :D

The Revo's look like awesome trucks, I wanted to get the E-Revo (electric version) but it was kinda outta my price range.

MylesMadness

2009-06-26 03:01:10

and yeah, what car you got MylesMadness? Whenever I can afford to throw a good brushless into this and get a good lipo pack I'll be able to hit 50+ :)

T-Maxx

http://www.traxxas.com/products/nitro/maxx/tmaxx4910/trx_tmaxx4910.htm

Brain

2009-06-26 04:41:12

ah, you got a T-MAXX, I hear that's a good rig. If I ever go gas/nitro I might get one of those. Might even get the E-MAXX eventually (electric version, with 2 motors)

Brain

that'd be awesome!
At the end of August I'll have some money to buy a brushless setup for my car.
50mph+ here I come!

edit: And i'm totally jealous of your revo 3.3, if I were to get a nitro car it would probably be that or the T-maxx, but probably the revo

Smartzkid

I used to be into racing RC cars, but electric ones, not nitro. I have a little xxx-s (Team Losi) that I bought a while back. The hobbytown near my house got new management and quit weekend races and eventually ran out of business (Damn new owners sucked… really bad.) So now I have this car and don't really know what to do with it,,, I have been thinking about putting it up on craigslist, but don't think it will go for very much.

MylesMadness

mormonman

2009-07-21 08:31:07

How much has yours cost so far, I used to sit and watch RC car vids and dream of buying one.

Brain

2009-07-21 10:45:02

starting from scratch with my slash:

car: $200
Charger: $60
2 batts: $57
(that's enough to get ya started…)
spare tires: $25
Replacement motor: $50
extra gears: $20 (total, quite a few gears)
misc: $20 (shoe goo, oil, engine cleaner, etc…)
(all prices include shipping)

Time: LOTS

end of august I'll be dumping another about $300 for an awesome motor/shocks/and maybe a body. Add another 30 if I get a good battery, another 30 for the balancer for said battery…

Don't forget, parts break semi-often (depending on roughness/luck), but luckily most parts cost about $3-8 a piece (or set of 2). Sucks for me though, since I have to order everything offline, which usually doubles the price with shipping….

Smartzkid

2009-07-22 03:24:48

Nice. Yeah, if money's a problem, don't buy nitro; they are very expensive upkeep.

Smarter Child

mormonman

I wanta buy the Traxxas E-Maxx… but I don't think that will happen until I move away from my parents.

MylesMadness

2009-07-23 21:16:27

For me the parts I broke going full speed into a tree was $15, and my friend flipped his over and it costed $100. Its all about luck

Brain

2009-07-23 23:36:03

exactly, it depends what you break. Some things would cost me like $3 to fix, others would cost me like $10….and that's about it..unless lots of things break…if I broke the whole chassis in half I think it'd cost me like $25 to replace that…lol
That's what I liked about the slash, most of the parts are pretty cheap, it's just that the hobby has a fairly high start up cost.

MylesMadness

2009-07-24 00:26:21

My friend broke his whole suspension. He went off a jump with the springs set to be completely stiff and snapped like everything.

Brain

2009-07-24 00:29:45

I blew a shock cap off at the skate park the other day. The stock shocks on the slash are all plastic, so I refilled and super glued the cap on :p
(sucks cuz shock oil got all over everything, lol)
It's only gotta last another month till I get the aluminum ones.

And I broke a output yoke =/ So I'm waiting on that to come in the mail.

Brain

2009-07-24 08:51:46

Got it fixed up, rained here, then I went to the track and MAN, it was fun! So much more traction than the super sandy crap that is usually there.

THEN, the president of the RC club here drove by and told me that he bought a slash today, and he went and grabbed, we did a few laps together (way fun with someone to race with) and then he spun out on a corner, I slid into his car, and I snapped a real axle carrier….=\

Luckly I had a spare from when I previously broke one. I just ordered the aluminum one too, so hopefully they'll be here when in time if I need them again.

all in all, a good day :D so glad he got one too, and smoked him, since he is used to 4WD, and the 2WD slash just kept spinning for him, lol

The new track is AWESOME, don't have any pics of it yet, but I drained 3 batts there racing and covered my car in mud….since it was kinda rainy…BUT, it was way fun. Spent 3.5 hours totally taking it apart and cleaning it, now it all nice and clean.
We also worked on the short course a little, changing some jumps around and laying some pipes.

I hit full throttle many times (maybe not so much in video)

It doesn't wheelie as easy as it looks, since most the place has fine dirt all over, so the tires spin. I turned down the punch by 60%, and geared down, so no more wheelies.

I also have a set of bald tires, broke a differential output yoke, and a steering block :(

epoxy fixed the steering, had a spare yoke, and have spare tires though :D

I still dream of getting one of these when I have a little bit more spending money…Or a T-Maxx…but I heard slashes are better?

Brain

2010-05-14 02:10:20

all depends on what you want
T-Maxx or Revo could be good starter nitro powered trucks. You can't really compare a slash with a T-maxx, since they are totally different in all aspects. T-maxx is a big 4wd nitro monster truck, while a slash is a 2wd still pretty big, electric short course truck. The slash 4x4 just came out, which is pretty awesome since it comes brushless. But it still isn't really comparable to a T-Maxx.

If I were to get a nitro monster truck it'd probably be an HPI Savage X, maybe even a savage XL.

Well, this is a $95 battery. Didn't get as many as I had hoped, but can't complain about free stuff!

And this is everything included if you want to buy it :) I'd even sell it for like $370 here, since I wouldn't have to pay ebay fees.

E: oh yeah, I normally wouldn't take all the pictures with me in them with the car (see my drifter pics above), but the owner of the company wanted pictures of me with all the stuff they sent to put on their website. Figured I post them here as well.

well that sold a while ago.
375 on ebay, after all the fees and shipping I netted $311

Placed the order Fri night, says it might be here Fri-tues, but we don't get mail here on Sat….so I pray FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brain

WOW!!!
I've got to say, this new RC (the Savage Flux HP) is way bigger than I remembered it being when I first saw one over a year ago. It is MASSIVE, weighing in 12.8 pounds! (5.8 kg). It is SOOOO much fun to drive as well, and tough as crap from the dumb stuff I've already done to it.
Only gripe would be the stock body, pretty thin. Of course it doesn't help seeing how much power it has :D

Action shots and videos will be coming soon!

Frement

2010-09-04 15:41:33

I used to drive RC cars with my dad, we had planes too (not electric) at that time. Then we sold everything (we had alot of them, like 10 cars and stuff for the planes).

Then we took like 1 years break, and now we have like counting atm…11 planes, 2 programmable controllers and I actually don't have any cars now, 1 helicopter thought, all electric, I love electric because its clean.

I do have some smaller cars, I should get some pictures for you guys.

Brain

2010-09-05 02:19:32

videos are still coming….

backflip off my legs

the brakes work well

This is simply after giving it too much throttle, tosses itself into the air and then onto it's back.

Well, I think thats about it for now, can't wait till I get my real car back, and I can go out to the RC track or some good spots to drive! (like the skate park!)

Brain

2010-10-21 15:13:52

And then I got it all re-rebuilt, took every screw out and cleaned everything, got new parts for what was broken, got some new wheels and tires too. Not to mention got a new body and painted it up :D

The full offset is a little big….but I figure I got the tires cheaper than new, if I have to I'll take them off with Acetone and put them on some standard offset wheels, and still be ahead of buying the tires new. (barely)
I like the width, feels very planted.

The first many pictures are glamor shots….then action shots to follow Hope you like it.

Body paint turned out pretty good, I think the paint made the masking tape shrink a little bit after the first coat, and some of the tape wasn't on well to begin with, but I'm happy enough with it since I'm just going to bash it anyway.

Stocker wheels:

New Wheels :D (comparing the new, added width to stock)

Hope you enjoyed the pictures as much as I do!

Broke the rear carrier just tumbling down the hill. These wide offsets put more stress on them for sure. Going to buy a few more stock ones, (cheap cheap cheap!) if I blow through them all I'll get a different style for sure.
I was able to swap some stuff around, so I don't have any down time :D
it is a very symmetrically built truck.

most trains run on electricity (diesel electric trains) and some even on just magnets. Shouldn't be too hard to see how a little car can run on electricity :)

Nitro is decent, but electric is much better. But of course there are always personal preferences.

and kaboom. Here is my latest project!!! Enjoy!

Got this crt.5 at the end of January on ebay for a decent price. Was pretty beat up, but came with an almost new 0.12 nitro motor thingy….Sold that off to some guy in Australia for $45, which was great for me!
I spent probably 4x in parts than what I did for the truggy to start with…haha

Not even sure why I bought it…just impulse you know? very bad Brian!

Anyway, took the Mamba Max 4600 combo outta my slash, and the radio system, to use in this. Used a lot of SCRT10 parts on the build to make it really easy. I knew that I did NOT want the RCM extended chassis conversion, I wanted to keep it as small as possible.

Enough with the jabbering, here are some pictures!

This is how I got it, dirty, used, broken, nitro

Here are all the nitro bits removed and ready to send out of the country! Good riddens!

Cleaned up, and these are all the salvageable parts from the auction I won….time to hop on ebay! Thank god for cheap chop shops! I guess there were a few more things, like the front cvds and stuff. But most of it is in the picture.

Now that looks pretty dang good!

Gotta love Castle!

Front Jato shocks. What I bought didn't come with shocks. I figured I wasn't out much since everyone hates them. Went straight to the upgraded stuff!!

Front 1/8th buggy shocks. Got the shock kit for like $17 I think. Not too bad!

Stock springs ride a tiny bit high, but I think I'll let it slide, as I like ground clearance ;)

Chassis looks brand new!! Hardly a scratch! Picked up some plastic chassis guards too, I figured why not?

Painted up a stock body for it, only $12 shipped to my door! Not including the paint though.

And she's ready to run!

I got to test her out at a track in my home town they just built. Having terrible luck with the front knuckles…I've broken 3 in 4 battery packs!!! :surprised:

Waiting on another pair to get here and I hope it was just bad luck….if not I might have to drop big money on some aluminum ones. I see someone makes a set for the SCRT10 that are much cheaper than the OFNA set. Will go that route if I need to!

It was a blast to drive while it lasted though….much different than a savage or a slash.

Really fun to fly, and has enough control to do some tricky maneuvers.

Also, my girlfriend's mother sent some late Christmas presents, and this little guy was in there! It's a really cheap one, and I wasn't expecting much from it, but it is actually pretty fun too! You can only control the throttle, and the spin of the heli, it always tries to go forward.

Smartzkid

Brain

Smartzkid

2011-03-27 23:43:14

Yeah - a system with rfPIC's and a couple of ultrasonic sensors or some other clever proximity sensor (I don't think you could get good enough accuracy with consumer GPS) would let you fly a swarm of drones with one remote. After that, all you have to do is mount some fireworks on each drone, and you've got a nice little air force.

What's the name of the system you're working with? I'm intrigued!

Brain

2011-03-27 23:50:04

The system is called Micropilot.

Sound interesting and all, but also sounds like a lot of work. It's troublesome enough to fly one, even with gyro stabilization.

Brain I am ordering that RC heli off Amazon. I'm excited! Btw how much does a RC F16 Jet with a turbine engine cost?

Brain

2011-04-17 14:05:21

with a kerosene turbine engine? or an electric ducted fan?
Kerosene will run you at least 3 grand…probably way more if it's your first. Electric can be cheaper (down to around 150 ready to fly maybe), but jets aren't the best planes to learn on….

The helicopter is a handful, but it's probably one of the easiest 4 channel helis you can get. They are a little cheaper on ebay than amazon.

Brain

that's a fine one to start out with Camaro. I've flown those, and they are very stable, with very little trimming needed since the gyro calibrates every time you start it up. Most of the smaller helis for indoors are decently tough. I've seen 2 of those broken, but that doesn't mean anything, the guy that owned them was pretty rough on them.
Just really concentrate on staying away from walls, furniture, and left over hair on the ground. If you are going to hit something immediately kill the throttle, that'll save your gears for as long as possible.

And $20 is a good price for it, they sell those kind at hastings for $40, lol.

So the one you got in controlled via infrared as opposed to radio waves (cheaper). Bad thing is that the sun also hits us with infrared. So you might not be able to go in the sun with it, as you will lose control right away, and it will go where ever it wants. Happened to one of my little planes, LOL. Didn't make it far though.

At night you could take it out, only if it is dead calm. A slight breeze with blow this little guy around a lot, and anything stronger will cause it to crash.

And it's not just because it is cheap, my bigger double rotor hobby grade heli still can't fly in any wind at all. Its just that these small of things can't take a breeze!

Yeah It came in today and i was flying it around, doesn't work to well with air conditioners running as well and going out side. This thing takes a little getting used because at times it will turn on its on for some reason. (Maybe because of all these crashes ) :)

Maybe ill take a video / some pictures later.

Brain

when you first turn it on make sure to set it down on a flat hard surface right away, the gyro has to calibrate every time. This could cause your yaw drifting (making it want to turn all the time).

also, with the cheap gyro in it, it can drift itself a little after a long flight or rough landing, re-starting the heli should clear it up.

To fly any copter in wind, you need active compensation - no?

Brain

I suppose so, whether it be automatic (gyroscopic) or manual, but once they get large enough they can take some hits from gusts. That's the main part, with these little ones a gust will knock them flat outta the sky.
