Jagex: Deleting accounts?

To reiterate, the listed account names are not mine, nor will I use them. I suggest you not use them as well. Jagex well flag you from the start if they see these names on macroing forums, and- hours later- in use. :p

Now that Jagex has updated RuneScape numerous times, could they be deleting accounts after periods of inactivity to conserve space?

Proof:
I've been getting some names that just about anyone could think of lately. Of course, the listed aren't in my forming autoing army; they are listed here solely to help prove a point [and are available, at time of checking]:
Squirtle Win //Pokemon
Go Charmandr //Torrent of Flame's avatar/Pokemon
Drgn Of Ra //Yu-Gi-Oh - popular monster or something
Slyfer Drgn //Yu-Gi-Oh - popular monster.
//6 searches. 4 unused.

etc. [All are based off of popular anime shows. This is to emphasize the fact that these names would have been taken YEARS ago] Not only are these names popular (Who doesn't love Charmander? o.o), but the letters removed in order to obtain the names, if any, are commonly letters (vowels ;) ).

Also, the name of my old [RSC] main was listed as available, and the account apparently no longer existed. Though I've re-registered it for nostalgia's sake.

I believe this is decent evidence that Jagex is deleting our accounts. :P

Of course, I could be going insane. But, I can say that finding new army names is FAR easier than it was when I tried last year. ;)

Thoughts?

I find it a little hard to believe that they are deleting accounts, though I'm not saying its impossible. The fact that your main's name is available is pretty good evidence, though. What space would be conserved if it were true?

Jagex doesn't delete accounts as far as I know. I have logged into accounts that were inactive for 3 - 4 years.

A few bytes in a database :p.

If it were true, quite a bit of space would be conserved.

23 skills * Integer [4-byte] = 92 bytes
Array of strings [up to 200] * char[0..12] (string arrays from 0 to 12 length. Assuming they use ASCII, each char takes up 1 byte) = anywhere from 0 to 2.4Kb
150+ quest Shorts [1-byte] = 150 bytes //Not booleans; a short can be any number from 0-255 to show that you are on step X of the quest
Array of Integers [4-byte] up to 488(?) [Bank slots] = 1,952 bytes
Array of Integers [4-byte] up to 488(?) [# of items in banks lot X] = 1,952 bytes
Remaining run energy, current levels, and the 9999999 things I haven't thought of not factored in, you get: 6.5Kb

If they have as they advertised a while ago, 10,000,000+ active players and 150,000,000 accounts overall, (Unsure. I recall the "join" button saying "Join the 150,000,000 accounts already made" at one point) and you get 975000000Kb of space.
975000Mb
975Gb
Nearly a Tb, and each player probably uses more memory than I mentioned with the various booleans, integers, doubles, etc. that I left out.

Jagex is, under my calculations, using nearly a Tb of space. They could save around 900Gb by deleting unused accounts. (under 10% of accounts created are active today)

Would make retrieving info a few ms faster, but wouldn't do much. :P

I doubt they all the character information on one hard drive disc though, and the information from the hard drive is only called when you logged into a server. At least I believe this, why else would you have to wait 45 seconds to switch worlds? The server probably has to save files back to the original source of it, then the new server has to find that file again.

And I point you to this thread.

1196 days ago. This was level 3 combat account. All skills level 1. Fresh off tutorial island. Not a single thing done on it.

My evidence.

Was your RSC account perm-banned? Cause I could see them deleting old perm-banned accounts.

1TB is almost nothing for a large company. Even if they use 10x or even 100x more data for each character than you calculated, that would be a small amount to store for the amount of money they have. Also, that data could be highly compressed.

I mean everyday joe's have 1tb of storage, and a few random joes have 2-5tb of storage.

1tb drive is only like 120 bucks.

I'm sure Jagex can afford a couple hundred of those.

At Carl's Jr/Hardee's corporate office some of our servers have 450 tb of storage. 1tb to jagex is a very very small fraction…

But on the topic of deleting accounts, I believe that they use to delete accounts that were inactive for ~1 yr or so back in RSC days. But those usernames aren't allowed to be used again. My cousin and I had a name and a name jr. The jr got inactive during the switch to RS2 and since about 6 months after RS2 being out and not playing on it for about 1 yr we weren't able to log onto it or create an account with name jr anymore…Also the character had 60+ fighting stats and 60+ mining etc…and can't be found on the high scores list either.

1TB costs like $100-$150 these days… I'm sure runescape can afford to keep all accounts made.

I don't think its about cost, Jagex are probably just trying to be more on player support, and free names that are perm banned, without a chance of getting exalted of crimes, so more desired names are available.

Yeah I agree, it seems logical anyway. I mean there's really no point in having stored all these characters if they are banned and have been banned for years and have no real chance of becoming unbanned.

That's just my opinion anyway.

Rubix

they probably are only deleting perm bans, not accounts that are just not logged into for X amount of days.

I have a feeling a lot of inactive accounts are going to be deleted though, since Jagex plans on allowing you to change your username (speculation is when they release mechscape).

The plan on letting you change your username? Where'd you hear that from? I would LOVE to change mine, I HATE mine. Lol.

I made an account for RS in 2004 and i forgot the password and haven't logged in since but when I try to make an account with that name it says its taken so i'm assuming they haven't deleted it

If they're deleting accounts I'd say they'd be older than 5 years. Just my opinion though.
