Philosophy of Fear

While thinking about autoing, I stumbled across this thought. The justice system is all based on fear. People don't want to get arrested, so they don't do things that would get them arrested. If you don't care, you are free. The same principal applies to RuneScape. You get banned. Why do we care? The game doesn't really matter to us. I adopted this philosophy almost as soon as I started autoing. Life is much better when you have less cares.

Vote whether you agree or not.

I agree on the fact that its way easier to just not care about getting banned on runescape, but that doesn't really apply to real life. If you go to jail in real life, you aren't really free. If you get banned, there's still many things you are still free to do.

What I was saying was that if a person didn't care if they went to jail, then they have just entirely defeated the justice system.

Reason, Runescape == pixels Real Life == Fucked over. A criminal record in this day and age means you dont get paid more than 11 bucks an hour at Mcdonalds for the rest of your life. Its all about consequences, the consequences of runescape are dissapointment while in real life you have the rest of your life to regret it.

A perfect example is this weekend. Me and my buddies were out at a lake, and someone had cut down a like 30 foot tree, dragged it behind there truck and tossed it in the fire. We woke up to the whole forest being on fire, water bombing planes above, fire trucks everywhere, and the four guys that did it are facing over 30 grade each for payments and potentially a criminal record. Thats shit that just doesnt go away.

I know. I wasn't saying that I wanted a criminal record. I was just saying that somebody who didn't care could defeat the justice system.

That's not defeating the justice system, that's just not caring.

It is set in place for them to not want to do it again, no?

Unless they get life sentence or death row…

Agree :).

I agree for the most part, the "justice" system in civilized countries is based on fear, but, it is only an imitation of our conscience. Human behaviour is based on the fear of either physical or emotional pain.
Why don't we kill anyone we see? Because we fear getting killed ourselves.
Why don't we punch random people? Because we fear getting hurt.
Why don't we simply commit suicide? Because we fear the pain of the death, and we fear to enter the only part of "life" which hasn't been documentet yet, the part that comes after death.
Now, humans also have a neat thing called "emoition", which also let's us experience emotional pain, which may even be worse than physical pain. So the loss of something which/someone who is important to us can also hurt us emotionally.

Our system is based on the emotional part of our brain… the lack of freedom (e.g. jail) is a sever punishment, sometimes considered worse than death. While, in many other countries, pain is the consequence of a crime, for example getting you hand cut off for stealing, or getting tortured for murder, stuff like that.

So, technically, it isn't possible not to "fear" the punishment of a crime, as long as the human mind is working correctly, because the punishment of a crime is always bigger than the gain of it.

Now, the difference from rl to rs is, that in rs, we have tons of bots, which most of you probably never play legit… if you have no attachements, you don't care what happens to them. Problem is, in rl, you are attached to yourself. Of course, things like hurt feelings, hunger, need, or health issues might let you forget your fear for a time.

actualy i disagree with you pure. i think people dont do those things cause we have evolved that way, and it has become instinkt.

we dont kill because it would not be benificial for our species to kill our own kind (maby yes now adays, but before life became so easy for us killing eachother would distroy our species)

and i think most morals can be explained that way.

Edit: And Griff, freedom is relitive. The man that has nothing but is content is much richer than the man with everything that still wants more. in the same way if you are in jail but are content with your lack of freedom, you are just as free as anyone else.

You're trying to answer a riddle with a simple yes or no when the key is really more complex than the lock.

I guess I agree.

What makes the people fear bans are the emotional connections they have to their precious accounts.

Some days, I know I want to go on an SRL spam-fest for the heck of it, but I don't, because that one mistake would cost me my SRL account.
