SRL Members standards are WAY to low!
No offence to TriLez, I'm just using his application as an example…

C'mon guys, (And women ofc)
the standards of Members have been getting lower, and lower.
I saw one of Fawks posts today "We are still outsmarting Jagex". This wont be going on for long if we are accepting to lowest possible.

Just using TriLez's app as an example - I see NO TPA's, NO AutoColour, NO DTM's, NO DDTM's and no logic. And theres Reflection. What happened to "Reflection is OK, IF IT'S FULLY BACKED UP WITH "old school" COLOUR FINDING ROUTINES"

we are never going to advance if the standard stay low, Jagex will "outsmart" us, and we will be left behind.
It very dissapointing, to see his app at 11-5, when it includes the above.
When I went for SRL Members, I was expecting a battle. When I got it, I was so happy. I could use an Avatar, for Forum access, ect.
Now its almost like the "Adverage Joe" (Could atleastr script a little) could come in here and apply, and make it.

I understand the whole spill on Attitude, but Attitude isn't going to beat Jagex. We need scripters!

This is just my view on things at the moment. This is going to be bad if it keeps going, the way its going.

Accepting at a lower standard does not mean that we now have less talented people on srl to outsmart jagex with… Does it? The more people we accept who cannot script as well means all the current great scripting srl members and devs go away. That doesn't make sense to me…

And actually, you're wrong. SRL members standards have gotten higher and higher. Back when I applied for members (2 years ago almost to the day), I applied with a 350 line power miner and got in with all yes's. I did write some tutorials and had a helper bear before applying, but still.

Now if I applied with that, it would be almost an auto no. I think that the standards are already too high… TPA's should NOT be necessary IMO. I hardly know how to use TPA's effectively myself (they're the new popular thing, and I'm old school) but I can write a script using basic color finding with good logic and fail safes which will run for a long amount of time without problem.

Well that's weird… Even I didn't say Yes to that, and I'm generally pretty lenient on apps.

Though, his app is the only one I've seen that I really disagree with in a while.

EDIT: @JAD, I also agree that TPAs shouldn't be neccessary, but the rest of the things noidea said, "NO AutoColour, NO DTM's, NO DDTM's and no logic", should be included on a good app (maybe not autocolor, seeing as most people make that with ACA anyway). As for the standards increase/decrease, back then, I doubt more than a couple people on all of SRL knew how to make DTMs, DDTMs, Autocolor, etc. The standards used to be lower just because there was a complete lack of SRL Members, unlike now, where there's quite a few active ones.

I thought this was the official list:

[X]: DTMs
[X]: DDTMs
[X]: Walking
[X]: Antiban/Antirandom
[X]: Multiplayer
[X]: TPAs/T2DTPAs

So.. seems like a pretty good set of things to look for. But yet we are letting that guy in with only 2/6?

That should be the standard. At least 4-5(Depending on the Attitude)/6

That's the standard that I have been going by. It should be made official. :P.

But really though, that guy isn't good enough to get in. Reflection isn't allowed in my opinion without colour backup.

Edit: Btw, I added your msn noidea.

Letting people in based on a list is stupid, I'm sorry. I'm pretty sure there is no "official list", there's just some people that base their voting on one.

Voting should be personal. You should look through the script thoroughly, and point out everything you see wrong with it if you have time. Not just browse through and make sure that they have TPA's and DTM's. Look at the persons attitude, helpfulness, longtivity, activity, how many times they've tried, if they've written any tutorials, their willingness to learn, and their script. DTM's aren't necessary for everything. There is logic in every script… So I don't know what you mean by "no logic".

2009-04-24 05:17:03

I agree with JAD, you wouldn't apply that list for a SCAR game like chess or mario or an amazing form. You couldn't vote no because the script doesn't match with the list, but the script is already a structured and a complex one.

ian.

2009-04-24 05:18:45

I agree. Even though I got in almost purely on my attitude, I still think some of the people getting in shouldn't.

(I agree that standards are too low)

SKy Scripter applied with a script that wasn't even for runescape. It didn't have TPA's or D/DTM's in it :eek: (de-memberize/de-developer him?)

Voting is different with each person. No list and not many rules can be created, because there are exceptions to every rule.

If we wanted to go by a list on accepting people for members, then we could write a script to auto read and decide if someone is worthy of members just by checking for those things… That's why we vote. It's supposed to be personal, and that's why different people vote differenly, because there is no "standard list".

There is a big difference between a SCAR game and Trilez(or watever)'s script. He uses reflection as an easy way out. Plus, it was always my thinking when I was a junior member(not too long ago) that almost all app scripts(if runescape oriented) should have banking, TPAs, DTM/DDTMs(where applicable), and good logic. All of those things are listed on every "How to get SRL Members" guide. The only exception to the banking was an multi-npc autofighter. Before I ever say yes to Trilez's app(if he doesn't make it and has to apply again…prolly will make it though:duh:) is the banking of cowhides… especially when he has reflection to walk with. Wow… I totally went off on a tangent :p

JAD, you really do have a point. You really really do. But I still can't allow it to go by with that guy getting in so easily. He doesn't have as much knowledge as he should, and attitude just cant make up for that.

I agree with a sweet form, game or something, I wouldn't use the list, because the sweet game knowledge would show that their skills pwn me. But this guy just doesn't use efficient coding, does not use colour at all, and that worries me. If we become dependant on reflection, how will we be able to react to all of the jagex hooks updates? Scripts will be useless for days at best. I will gladly accept a reflection script, if he also shows his knowledge of the SRL include, of which reflection is not included automatically. No offence to reflection devs, but it simply isnt enough to make up for the whole entire srl include which uses colour.

Edit: JAD - Better re-write your 'How to get members' tutorial ;).

E2: Bed time guys, I will update my arguments maybe in the morning before school. <3 You all though, no hard feelings on my part. Just so everyone knows. I just like debating with people. So hope nobody gets mad at me for disagreeing with them. JAD is my hero, so you guys know. Looked up to him forever, since we were both community members.

Did you guys test his script? Who cares what it uses if it works… Right?

If someone applied with a 55 line script that worked flawlessly I wouldn't say "not complex enough, and where's the TPA's?". The goal of SCAR is to create scripts that work, not to create scripts that look fancy and complicated.

Edit: Garret, tons of people got in by learning the topics of that tutorial. I never mentioned TPA's… :) I understand that TPA's are the new standard now too, I really do. But if you can make a script that works just as good without them, then who cares.

If someone could create a flawless 55 line script without cramming everything on one line, I would auto dev them :P. But sadly, if they have to use the easy, non reliable way to make their script work, I don't think that they have the skills to aid in the development of SRL.

E: Jad. I concur about the TPA, they are really pretty advanced. But the other 5 points should be at least shown to say that they know the include. Bed time. Night night guys <3

We shouldn't let people in who use SCAR/SRL then if we aren't going to let people in who use something that is "unreliable" (unreliable meaning Jagex breaks the scripts with updates). Jagex is always changing the login screen and the interface and other things and it breaks many scripts with all kinds of updates, to non reflection scripts. I know that reflection is obviously less reliable, but still.

SCAR is an "easy way out" of playing runescape. Why would you want to take the hard road when it's unnecessary? Why do with a shovel what you can with a bulldozer? (Our motto)

The actual idea is to not make scripts just work, its to make them work and make them look as human as possible while doing it.

TPA's and D/DTM's aren't required to make a script look human… It's possible to make a script that just uses the basics such as FindColorSpiral but with good logic that will work effectively and humanly.

When I said flawlessly I didn't mean a script that worked but used ClickMouse :p Obviously I exaggerated with the 55 lines, but you know what I meant.

Standards are too low. Period.

I point out issues, but no one seems to read.

A script that wont function because of begin..end nesting DOES NOT deserve to be voted in.

Check out the tut in my sig, it was both a Rant as well as for information. Also, check out all the comments. This isn't the first time this was talked about.

Voting should not be made from a list instead voting should be modified for each unique member. Just because a applicant doesnt have ddtms or dtms should not mean that they dont get it. they could always use different methods. Granted i personally dont believe reflection should be one of those other methods.

For the record, I never said that member standards aren't too low, because I don't know. But standards aren't something that you just say "lets raise it from an 8 to an 8.5 difficulty level". Every application is different and everyonoe who votes will vote differently or for different reasons. Some people will almost auto no a script with no TPA's or DTM's, while I will look at the script for good logic and usually run the script to see how it works (because that is what's most important, right?). But members standards have only risen. If you guys think that they need to be risen even more, then that's another thing, but they have for the most part always been on the rise.

@Canada man, Amen.

I have not looked at his application, but bare with me.

I do not agree that TPA's should be necessary, or DDTM's. Most DDTM's today are created with nielsie95's DDTM creator, you don't need to know anything about scar except for the color, tolerance, and DTMRotated/FindDTM. I do agree that TPA's show knowledge, but basically all you need to know what an array is, and what a TPoint is. EDIT: I didn't mean to say they were extremely easy, but that it's really not a big deal.

I do not believe reflection should be let in if that's all their using, and that they should be decent enough to have reflection as the backup if they even use it.

I understand the whole spill on Attitude, but Attitude isn't going to beat Jagex. We need scripters!

We're not developers. Attitude is a great portion of what we need for SRL Members. If a person's a good scripter, but flames everyone for everything, it will be a no from me. On the other hand if the person's a not so great scripter, but is friendly and helpful it'll be a yes from me (has to be really nice though if it's a horrendous script).

SRL will not fall because juniors who aren't great scripters yet have gotten into SRL Members. SRL will fall if no one gets into members.

Regarding the 'it was much easier to get into members years ago' issue: I think it'd be safe to assume that 3+ years ago SRL was a much smaller community, less scripters less leechers alike. With less members, there is less teaching/learning going on, especially in the department of tutorials. Where did most of you learn scripting? Tutorials. How many of those TPA/DTM/DDTM/AC/etc. tutorials were written within the past two years? Probably all of them. If you look way back, you probably wouldn't find many, if any, good tutorials on advanced techniques like those. Back then, it was hard enough for the average member to understand variables, constants, if/then's, loops, etc, as it is to learn DTMs, DDTMs, TPAs, AC, etc today. Think of it like the real world: (Forgive me if my facts are way off, I'm not that good with modern history :)) a couple hundred years ago, knowledge of electricity was sparse. Thomas Edison was an absolute genius for making a lightbulb. Lets suppose that there's an ICOE (International Committee of Electricity). Edison would have been the head of the committee. If someone wanted to be a part of the committee today and brought a lightbulb that they made in, would they get in? No, they'd just get laughed at and declined.

SRL is a just a small microcosm of the real world :)

Reflection should be banned from apps. It takes too little skill to make a reflection script, and it is too easy to learn. Anyone can make a reflection script that is nearly 'flawless'.

Everyone has special techniques and preferences by which they code. For example, I love using TPAs. I use them for everything, from objectfinding to walking, and my methods work great. In any situation, I would rather a TPA than any other option in your list. Really, most of my scripts have 3, maybe 4 of your items, yet they still work great.

Don't judge on quite how they accomplish their end goal, whether by DTM, DDTM, radialwalk, TPAs, or even simple color finding. Those are all skills which are learned over time and with practice. Judge people on how they put their knowledge to use, and on their understanding of essential programming, such as loops, cases, arrays, et cetera.

SRL Member standards are not too low, they are just focused on the wrong thing.

I concur with your ideas. I didn't mean that the all mighty list that I posted was the 100% way out, but I base my vote off of that list, plus my opinion of the person. If the list shows a low amount of things, they better have a good attitude. So if they use TPAs everywhere, like in your example, then that would check off tpas and walking, which would just prove that they are more efficient.

So.. yeah.

It's not the fact that something is magical about them, it's that someone took the time to make some functions that were able to use the TPA's in a unique way.

We shouldn't let people in who use SCAR/SRL then if we aren't going to let people in who use something that is "unreliable" (unreliable meaning Jagex breaks the scripts with updates).
^That, plus any "reflection is too easy" comments

reflection being too easy really shouldnt be the problem. If i write a GoToBankFromAnywhere function and it was added into srl, would you ban that? I think it really should be on the fact that they're applying for membership at the SRL Forums. If they like using reflection then they can go apply at (i assume that there is one) a reflection forum, otherwise, they should show a good, thorough knowledge of SRL. Knowing SRL should include knowing SCAR, so they should also be able to script efficiently with general scar scripts (which should be able to be determined by the script they submit anyways).

After saying that, i do agree with Smartzkid in that the standards (just from the musings of the people from this thread) are unfocused. While im not saying that there needs to be a set list, people shouldnt be grading the applicants on different criteria. If people at the Olympics decided to start grading people differently all on different scales, then the people being declined would be pissed. (Actually thinking about this, i think that maybe a number scale of grading might be better than a yes/no. That would give people that are on the fence an easier way to pick.

I like reflection, when I see an app with reflection, I immediately look how its used.

There is a difference between this:

Sorry to whose script I used.

The second uses more advanced techniques, member worthy. The other, not so much.

Although I am a super fan of TPAs, they aren't necessary IF someone has a better option. Otherwise, I look for TPAs.

Also, an immediate no for me is a static DDTM. That's just plain frustrating.

I thought this was the official list:

[X]: DTMs
[X]: DDTMs
[X]: Walking
[X]: Antiban/Antirandom
[X]: Multiplayer
[X]: TPAs/T2DTPAs

So.. seems like a pretty good set of things to look for. But yet we are letting that guy in with only 2/6?

That is DEFINITELY NOT the "official requirements list". Not close at all.

Get a grip on reality and have a look at what things are like.
TPAs a requirement for member apps? Jeesus that's advanced stuff! Have a look at this. Have a look at the script.

That script won the competition. Do you guys see any TPAs? Myself i see FindColorSkipBoxArray, which is pretty darn good in itself. Yes, today we'd just use SplitTPA, but do you realize how much more advanced that is?

When i joined a DDTM was a HUGE thing. Now it's a "requirement". Yes, the times are changing and the longer you've been here the more you know. So yo start to expect too much from people, thinking they've been here as long as you have.

Has anyone noticed the huge amount of members that have been being let into SRL Members? ever thought why? Because there is a lot of potencial which you guys throw out. Potential which you guys don't even notice.

Have a look at my app. Back then, it was one hell on an application, now people would have hesitated.

I wonder, do some of you even notice the changes? Or the logic in the scripts? Or the originality?

The "list" which you have there, is a list that if i am not mistaken TViYH constantly posts, however there is nothing official about it.

Don't guard your rank so jealously. The standard is actually too high on most cases.

Guarding it this jealously means there is no one to use the scripts in the members ranks, which makes all the scripts be posted in JMs which then makes the scripts section in SRL Members empty. It's pointless;

Devs and other people have started to post more scripts in SRL Members, fortunately; But enjoy it an share it rather than hogging it all for yourselves! I'm not saying let them all in. But remember that each script is usually many hours of learning and trying;

Also, think how long it took you to learn TPAs before making it a requirement. People used to get in with High Alchers back in the day.

So it's okay to keep it like this though not too easy not too hard. We shouldn't expect a applicant to learn everyone like a pro that has been scripting for 1 year or more…

I got in with the most basic script ever. If I had not, I probably would not still be here today. SRL made me interested in coding once I got in.
Usually you can tell when someone is just applying to get "l33t members scriptz", or if they will remain active after getting in. If I see they are just someone who is just applying to get the better scripts, I usually hit no. If I see they are determined, have released the script before for the public, and that they will probably continue to write and help the community, I usually hit yes.

The only problem is that people dont take their time while voting. Everyone is always just out for that extra post and to try and make them selves look better than they are. If people would take just a few minutes to actually read through an application I believe this problem would then be gone.

THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE!

I think everyone should be able to vote what they want, if they want someone in members, vote them yes, if they don't vote no. You can't just change everyone's standards, and SRL Members isn't really what requires a "great" skill in scripting, thats for the devs :).

The standards for becoming a member should be set to where anyone can achieve membership if they work hard enough.
Not everyone was born to be a scripter.
Some people just pick it up, other people will struggle a lot with it.
If someone applies with something they definitely worked hard on and have a good attitude about it, you shouldn't vote no just because you've seen better.

I can tell the difference between someone slopping some stuff down to get membership and someone who really struggled and tried to learn all the things put into their script.
If the standards say you have to be some kind of pro scripter, a lot of people don't have much of a chance at membership.

Well, I think that the standards are WAY to low. Believe it or not, I don't know if I was worthy when I first got in! I had like a 20-2 vote, but the standards were low. Not to be cocky, but I would deserve it by now, but we are letting in some people that don't quite deserve it yet.

Back when I applied, The script I used, could make most of you vomit.

It wasn't until I was a member that I started to script seriously, and I believe, the current standards are fine.

I was reading someone's script the other day and to my surprise, there were quite a few things wrong, nothing serious, but I could see that these are things that they will soon improve on and later be able to produce flawless procedures. (Not you Cyc)

Raising the bar will push away too much new talent, I'm not saying I'm talent, and that me getting in was even a good idea.
I never come on, I never auto, I barely script. But I still read occasionally and will post if I feel I have a valuable opinion.

The way it works for me:
Newb Leecher;
Finds SRL; Open's up a cornucopia of brilliant scripts and scripters.
Is intrigued; Starts to try to learn; Many tutorials soon have him making scripts with actually compile but with horrendous outcomes in application;
He posts script, as he knows no better; He is given geniune criticism about how to improve;
HE improves;
He applies; Maybe not with the best script, But one you'd be happy to use if there were none better.
He gets in, and continues to learn, and continues to write bigger, longer and more complex scripts.

The last step is from confidence, that he is of ability for membership

I agree with RM in that there is no official 'list of requirements'. These so called 'requirements' which are posted around the place were originally just guidelines for prospective SRL Members to have a look at and based on that create a script. Making a checklist like that is not what the guidelines are about and many Staff members, Developers and SSRL members have expressed their discontent with such a list.

You as voters should look at each script individually and thoroughly, looking at the strong points and the weak points, making sure the applicant knows what these are and posting suggestions for them. Just quickly going through and crossing points off a list is not what I'd regard as proper voting.

If you would have read my posts properly, or I had posted my thoughts properly, you would have noticed that I wasn't saying that the standards should still be what they were back when I applied. I was just proving my point that standards have only been rising; they have never really fallen ever.

TPA isn't a really fancy technology, it's just a simple struct/class (I don't know what you'd call it in SCAR. record?) with public member variables x and y. That's it. Just because you know how to use the functions that go along with them that OTHER PEOPLE CREATED doesn't demonstrate scripting knowledge. Those functions may be more efficient then the FindColorSpiral and other basics, but they are not necessary to make a well working script (if you use good logic). I'm not anti TPA, because they have some very cool functions that go along with them; I just don't see how it takes much more skill to use a TPA then any other color finding method. All the functions are created for you…

Frankly, the only thing to be required in an application should be logic.

I vote no often, usually on things like standards and messy code. Yes I don't vote yes sometimes when I probably should but I expect too much. In my opinion it's when I see faults in code that make the script fail, that's when I vote no. I don't think people who can't place a begin end nest correctly should be in.

Also, knowing how to use a case and a for loop, not necessarily together, but in general. I probably just get frustrated when I compare some of the apps that have got in compared to my own personal application.

So, while I have my opinion, everyone else does as well.

Summary, careless code frustrates me. :)

And guys, the point of being an SRL Member isn't to feel superior over the other non-members…it's pretty sad if you want to raise the requirements because you see yourselves as being better than others and don't want to lose this sense of superiority. Don't forget what it's like to be that junior member, who has spent hours of learning and hard work to get together a script to apply with. It's unfair to except them to be of the same scripting ability as people who have been SRL members for a long time; getting knocked back after trying so hard because of this reason is very discouraging. The whole point of SRL Members is basically to screen out the leechers, not a place for only the elite scripters. There's a reason most SRL members don't have scripting cups, expecting the most advanced and up to date techniques to be used by an applicant is simply unfair - especially when alot of SRL members currently don't know these techniques themselves.

Daniel

2009-04-25 10:13:57

I do agree that the standards are too low (maybe they were regarded as "high" back 5 years ago, but that was 5 YEARS AGO!), which is bad, since things are advancing and the community should advance with it. Here is another example: "in the year 3000 everyone has high-tech hover cars, which are much more efficient and emits oxygen instead of pollution from todays cars, but i drive this 1999 Holden Commodore which emits a lot of pollution". Don't you think the guy driving the commodore (me) should change to a high-tech hover car? Yes, i do.

Well, i hope you guys get what i meant by that :p
Hopefully this thread will not be one of those "useless" ones. Although, they prove a valid point which should be taken into consideration by SRL Staff.
No thread is useless. This has been taken into consideration at every single level of the srl forums - and both me and the claw can tell you that with absolute certainity.

However what you must realize is that the Staff of SRL can see these issues from a different perspective, because we are more aware of the divisions of ranks and what the objective of each rank is;

SRL members it's not supposed to be full of leet scripters -> that dev's! SRL Members is supposed to be leech free, with good scripts being shared here, where everyone can mutually help each other out, and help each other improve!

Yes, of course we want leet scripters in srl members! however remember that people keep developing their scripting abilites.

Can everyone in here post a script in members like Narcle's Echo Fighter? Well, when Narcle became an SRL Member he couldn't do it either! But he kept on improving! You can't really expect new members to be able to do it.

Also, in member apps you are not looking for the next developer; You are looking for the next scripter! If a guy who joined a week ago has made a power cutter in the mean time i'd take it more into consideration than someone who's been here for a year and did a willow banker.

Now-a-days i still look back at my app and am proud of the logic in it; There were no advanced techniques used, i didn't even use DTMs! But the logic was good - and when the logic is good there is space to learn the techniques.

Now have a look at this:

Function TPAFindTree:boolean;
var
TPA: TPointArray;
ATPA: T2DPointArray;
TP: TPoint;
i: integer;
begin
FindColorsSpiralTolerance(tpa, blah, blah, blah);
if Length(tpa) <= 0 then
begin
Result := false;
exit;
end;

ATPA := SplitTPA(tpa, 5);
for i:= 0 to High(ATPA) do
begin
TP := MiddleTPA(ATPA[i]);
MMouse(TP.x, TP.y, 3, 3);
wait(200);
If IsUpText('Chop') then
begin
Result := true;
exit;
end;
end;
end;

Function FindTree: boolean;
begin
if TPAFindTree then
Result := true
else
if not TPAFindTree then
Result :=false;
end;

the TPA procedure is good - but the person might have learnt that straight from a tut without really understanding why s/he does it that way, which shows in the horrible logic used un FindTree.

So just because a person uses TPAs it doesn't mean they're good scripters or that they even understand it!

Now if the logic were good, you can be sure they'd soon enought learn TPAs.

Btw, JAD, a TPoint is a type ;)

Why are TPA's such a big thing? Really now all you have to do it use the TPA maker. That isnt complex at all? Its like using ACA. Hardly any appliances even make their OWN TPa's anymore, they are just copied with the variables changed to suit the script.

Scripting is getting harder with Jagex, but you guys are looking for really advanced stuff. People posting here are like "YEAH, standards are getting lower" but you cannot really talk alot of the time. The standards arent decreasing, its just their isnt a drastic need to have a really complex script any more. People at JR Member dont need to have a hugely complex knowledge of SRL, thats for learning when you are in SRL.

All of you members are going on about how it is getting lower, yet possibly the two best scripters here, WT-Fakawi and Wizzup?, vote yes on these apps where you are all putting no.

You dont care about scripting capability any more, you care about defending your title. You treat it like some honour. It shows that your a good scripter, not an amazing complex one. Who cares if you dont feel special about being an SRL Member? That isnt the point of the freaking title.

I think its bad that you all care about your rank. noidea, you say we have 'new technologies', but it doesnt mean they have to be used. We have technologies to colonize the moon but it doesnt mean we are going to does it? You guys are looking more for what is not found in the script than what is.

Last time i checked, As long you're not Mod/admin and some other highly ranked you got
the same rights as the Jr.Membs.. The biggest diffrence is you're avatar & Yellow name..
Sure, he can visit the script section!, theres like only 5 scripts worth leeching? No big
deal.

For the people that think the stadards has been lowered,
Revolution?, if we i would applied with my application script i would Never gotten
in to SRL members. But guess what! :eek: When i got in, i started scripting for real..
I learned a shitloads more, not just how to use FindObjMultiCustom.
And i turned out better then expected, no?
Remember that the more advanced SRL gets, the less we should expect from the
Jr.Membs.

From now on, I will only vote 20% depending on their script! The other 80% will be their attitude/quaility of posts and
posts compared to join date.

agreed, for example. My script didnt even work, it compiled then failed like 30 minutes latter because of some error i never bothered to fix. and not to mention the fact it'd log in and just sit there. I admit, i havent scripted since i got in.

Perfect example, you still shouldn't be in then.

From: The Claw

I thought it was the exact opposite. When I first applied and Nava2 posted on my app. I thought he was the biggest dickhead in the world. Now I like and respect him very much for that because it had such a positive effect. More people need to be pushed like that. I wish even more people would have done it to me.

And it seems to me, the reason even most SRL Members dont know the more advanced techniques is because they do not know enough when they first get it.

When you first get SRL Members it feels good. You have achieved that goal and been recognized by the community that you can script. But more and more people are getting accepted with simple, poorly written "scripts" that clearly took no time at all to write and wasn't thought about at all. Once that person gets members they dont script again, dont contribute, dont do anything. All thats left now is for them to be let down by the lack of scripts in the Members section :p

People just need to use logic when voting AND applying. If you see potential in someone then go ahead and vote yes, but dont carelessly vote because if we keep letting in all these "low end SRL Members" eventually there wont be anymore Devs or Mods. Just a bunch of people who are waiting around for the next best script.

Why is that…? I do not understand how letting in more srl members diminishes the amount of people who will be promoted to dev/amount of people who are already dev.

Letting in more members doesn't take away from the great scripters we already have and the great scripters to come… Unless I'm crazy.

[X]: Antiban/Antirandom

So.. seems like a pretty good set of things to look for. But yet we are letting that guy in with only 2/6?

Multiplayer?

The requirements should be.
[X]: Language Syntax
[X]: Order pizzas for SRL developers over the Internet.
[X]: Order escorts for SRL developers over the Internet.
[X]: Binary Numbers, signed and unsigned
[X]: language control structures
[X]: Good music taste

I dont mean that it will "take away" so to speak. More that if you keep letting people in easier without testing their knowledge and challenging them to learn then people just wont learn. They will write some half ass "script", get members, and be done. Where as if gaining access to Members was more of a challenge then people would have to buckle down and put some effort into it.

Im not saying go overboard and make it super hard to the point where only few people can get in, but keep it challenge to keep people "on their toe's" so to speak and more interested and involved.

That's all I meant by that.

OK, but I don't think that's true.

In my introduction to business text book for school, we are talking about different kinds of management. The old style of management was "people need to be forced to do things and disciplined, because people will avoid work whenever possible". The new style of management is "managers should give employees freedom to be creative, and not be on their backs all the time. If employees feel more like they are working with people, and not for people, they will want to work hard and will not have to be forced to."

Anyways, I believe that majority of people will continue to work after getting into srl members. I know I did, and most others would say they did too. I had never created a bitmap, dtm, done walking, or anything beyond simple object finding before getting members (not saying that this should be the requirement now). After getting members, I made a few walking woodcutting scripts that used TPA's (not exclusively), dtms, bmps, and walking (with DDTM's + rw).

Why do people want to get members in the first place? I really don't think it's for the scripts since there aren't many there, so why would majority stop scripting once they got in? IMO, you shouldn't have little to learn once getting srl membs; it should be a place where you continue learning and developing good scripting skills.

Things I auto fail for:

-Reflection doing anything that can be done with color (walking, object detection, etc. compass and little stuff is okay)
-Using if-else's when cases could be used
-Using all global variables
-Forcing the use of useless custom includes or plugins (good includes are ofc fine, and good plugins are ++++)

I vote on the idea as much as the implementation. As long as they demonstrate good knowledge of the language, I don't mind how they get their objectives completed.

I think you all know my point of view on this subject.

To quote myself:

SRL has grown to 50k+ Members. I still see a lot of new talent popping in. But I have noticed that the threshhold for promoting new Members has dramatically risen. If a script does not contain the neccesary failsafes, multiplayer, properly formatted code, etc. you all have a tendency of pushing no.

I would like to give you three considerations before you again push no.

 1. What is the attitude of the applicant? This is for me, and it should be for you too, the most important quality. How is his/her 's tone of voice? How is his/her's willingness to learn and adapt? What is are his/her's words compared to age/social background? The atmosphere (meaning you) is what makes this community great! If applicants speak their truth quietly and nicely, I would let them in by default, like I have done so on many occasions in the past. So, if the attitude is right….push yes next time.
 2. How many times has the applicant applied? In other words: Is this a persistent junior? Has he/she learned from his last appliance? If he/she has….push yes next time. We cant all be Masters!
 3. We were all nobodies once. Do not forget that. Remember where you came from, and view the application through the eye of the nobody. See the pride in the script. See how it has been written/formatted with care. Look at the time it took to finally master the often difficult programming concepts of SCAR/SRL. Look at all the blood and sweat it took to finally push "Submit New Thread". Feel the anxiety of the applicant as he watches yes/no grow. Generally speaking: if a script has just a hint of crude originality….push yes next time.

I hope you will take these consideration seriously. A community that doesnt evolve quick enough is a dead community. SRL is not as much about scripting as it is about people. If we keep inviting the right people in, we have a better chance of survival.

WT

To me, anyone, a-n-y-o-n-e, that has made a script for rs is worthy of member, because it has cost him literally hours and hours of work getting it right. This is what the division is for. Scripters vs. non-scripters, Consumers vs Creators. Consumers are out, Creators are in.

Although I am very very proud of this community, and it is one of a kind, you guys still sometimes give me shivers.

Please, more tolerant, have patience. Just remember you're own application, and the amount of work it took to… a darn! I am repeating myself.

And I found I learnt more being in members, so those that want to script generally become members because of that, instead of the yellow name and an avatar (do love the yellow though…).

As long as they prove they are interested in scripting, and show at least the basics and perhaps some good functions, then they should be able to get in (with reasoning to impact on the community as a whole).

From my point of view, over the years SRL has deteriorated from high standards in both the developer and member statuses simply because they were really bad ass and intimidating to incoming beginners. However I do think SRL members should be currently raised a little bit to further motivate train-ees to work harder to have better functions, back ups, and standards because SRL deserves more hard working talented members and more motivated train-ees.

Now moving past that I think we can accomplish this by simply

 1. Adding more scripts to the Member's section
 2. Making juniors/train-ees more aware of Member benefits
 3. Adding more member benefits
 4. Rewarding people more for deserving member status
 5. Recommending people to apply for members
 6. Voting honestly and individually with more constructive criticism towards apply-ees

To be blatantly honest with everyone, why depend on 'higher-up's to make the SRL member ship standards higher? It is YOU (anyone reading this) that can make a difference simply by doing your part and passing on the good and improving yourself as others will follow you.

And you can just throw around statistics but you have to remember, you have to divide the incoming outgoing rate by the denominator instead of just a gross increase such as the concept of efficiency.

My two cents.:norris:

Adding more scripts to the members section - This is something to which all would have to contribute. It might mean that at the beginning it won't get as much feedback because we're used to the section being empty. Lets work on changing this :) I posted RM Power Crafter and RM Guild Fisher very recently there. Check siggy for links.

Adding more member benefits - what would you suggest? I think this goes back to the being more scripts in members section.

Rewarding people more for deserving member status
- Didn't quite understand it. People are rewarded for their scripting abilities with: member status, scripters cup, masters cup, developer.

Member benefits are as simple as access to more scripts, this might include the 'better version' like 'complete package' or 'full version' sort of speak

Rewarding as in more people posting on welcome such and such threads.

It's the simple things that help and it's the thought of being a member, being good, and having to work hard to get there that will raise member standards as well as the current members willingness to study and advance in scripting style and technique.

I think that all the talk about standards being too low is because people don't take the time to actually go through the script. People say that the standards are getting lower because one guy gets rejected when he really should have gotten in, and then a really bad application comes, but no one takes the time ot actually go through it, and the guy gets in. I think if members simply put in the extra effort to actually READ the script, this would be solved.

Excuse me for the massive grave dig, but I ended up revisiting this thread.

While the plan of adding more scripts to the members section worked well for a while, there was a small but rather important flaw in that plan.

The proportion of SRL Members who autos is quite small. And therefore there is a lack of use and feedback for the script, which is a dis-incentive for the scripter.

As for adding new things, a lot of new things have been added to SRL Members, since this topic was last posted in.

Out of the top of my head: Black Market, SRL Merching, MSI
The first two are pretty much dead, the third could have much more activity.

Also, what is everyone's opinion of current SRL Member Entrance standards?

In my opinion, instead of recruiting good scripters, we should recruit good members who has the ability to create useful scripts (Even if their standards or scripting ability isn't necessarily as high as the previous applicants per say).

Reason:
Don't quote me on this, but from what I've seen. Most people learn to script for the sole purpose of getting the SRL member rank, and does not actively participates with the community as a scripter.

So instead of looking for people's scripting abilities, we should ask applicants to create working script(s) for the Free for all and Junior member sections. That way, each applicants has the experience to script, and shows that they can contribute to the community as a scripter.

 • An Illegible piece of work is a bad piece of work.
 • Awareness of the include
 • Someone who does not know what functions he could have used clearly still has a lot of learning to do. There is no need to understand how it is done, but knowing that it exists is minimal knowledge. (In refference only to SRL functions)
 • Knowledge beyond the include
 • WizzyPlugin, DDTMs, other Programing Languages, .. Meaning that if the script has no more fine tuning than what the include offers then no knowledge beyond the include is shown.
 • Community Presence
 • Is this someone who has published scripts before, or are they applying with their first script? Is this someone who you see regularly helping out? Is this someone enthusiastic ? Is this someone who provides feedback? OpenSource or NoSauce? Has this person ever attempted to teach someone something? (Tuts, explaining what is wrong rather than just fixing, .. )
 • Willingness to learn
 • Those more willing to learn are more likely to keep on scripting, improving, and even if the script seems a bit poorer you can be fairly certain the person will learn to the level you would consider 'minimum'

Just a little something out of the top of my head..

edit:
Heh.. you could actually ask people to grade the applicant under these headers, then add up the score and if it is above an average of x, then the person is accepted. You could even have different ranks having a *x to their score; This would most likely include all those with the 'judge hammer'.

eg
Standards: (10 / 20)
Include Awareness: (15/25)
KBI: (10 / 25)
Community: (14/20)
Willing: (7 / 10)

This could be the new scale with which we valuate(?) applicants. Before it was mainly on techniques (ddtm/tpa/antiban checkbox, don't use it anymore) but now we are starting to give more credit to personality. Note that I don't see it as a "must" to give grades on these criteria, but these should be the things that we want to see in SRL Members from now on.

Comments? I want to see some more devs/mods/admins/seniors suggest something concrete like RM.

This subject is being discusses in the SSRL forums, and this is what RM had to say:

Heh, Im not so happy you posted that for me without asking, but I would've soon enough anyway…

So what does everyone think, of this "new way" of judging SRL Applicants?

Into that list I would also add Pascal Knowledge after further thinking, and nielsie discussed the exact value of the more abstract headers (willingness to learn), but those are things that could be properly set later.

I like the new method. It allows more freedom when voting, and would be more accurate.

New language would open new possibilities.. :)

Why would Java not be an option? surely it would create an increase on traffic for both our site and rsbot, which will benifit the botting community as a whole. As I said before, I would prefer to stick to what we already know, and do, but having said that, something that can come in handy with other parts, ie reflection, would be ideal if we change. I think we need a fairly basic, and simmilar scripting language.

I would like to say that SRL has had a point of being original from the rest of the pack. I feel like if we convert to Java we are only one step closer to becoming the generic bot that has been created so many times over.

RM, I believe that we shouldn't vote on what is being used, but on how well and human like the script performs.

Problem is 90% of the scripts, if not 100% are not even ran.

If that is true (Which I believe it is) maybe we should ditch the current system. Or let people in more easily who don't apply. There are lots of people who make scripts that have 5-10 posts on their respective threads, most of these comments are helpful but sadly a lot of the scripts never get used.

Maybe if it was easier to get in to SRL by just posting a script it would encourage SRL Members+ to take interest in up-and-coming scripters. We could so something similar to the current system where if a member+ notices a newcomer with a seemingly good script he/she starts a thread for consideration of that member, based upon how that member replies to, and helps those who have problems or errors with his script we can judge community and such, and maybe the script will actually be ran so we can see how well and human-like it actually is.
