the 'normal' qwerty layout that most people use only came into existance because old typewriter keys would jam, so the designers moved the keys further apart, to force people to slow down while typing.
the qwerty keyboard is designed to be inefficent.
dvorak is designed to be comfortable and fast, but because of the invisible hand of the market, its not very widely used.
what does srl think of it?
iv got an old keyboard im going to modify to be the dvorak layout.
this site seems quite helpful about it http://dvorak.mwbrooks.com/
