Australian Censorship

Australia is trying to censor the Internets. On all Australian ISPs, it will limit everything on "safe for work" sites only. Meaning, anything that has any form of pornography, obscene language, and anything that is even close to illegal; will all be banned from Australia.

http://www.wikileaks.org/wiki/Leaked_Australian_blacklist_reveals_banned_sites - News

http://www.myg0t.com/omp/aussie_blacklist.txt - List of all sites Australia will soon block.
EDIT: myg0t fails and 404'd their list (probably getting too much traffic to it), here is a pastebin of the list of sites that are going to be blocked: http://pastie.org/private/nh7tqtabuomaejrfjmz0yw

Banning obscene language is is to overdo it, but im against most censorship anyhow.
okay if you remove illegal stuff like children pornographics.
But like Yakman said, we'll see

I honestly see no child pornography websites on the banned list. They only seem to be banning porn that is of people 18+, which is legal >_>

What is the punishment for circumventing the blocks? Proxy get?

If Internet porn is blocked will they also outlaw regular porn (magazines and videos)?

…Wikipedia blocks…interesting

They will probably block most proxies.

And Wikipedia has a lot of pornographic content and obscene language, surprisingly.

I remember looking at that "Banned Australian Links" list and it contained lots of sites that are most likely site's for pedo's with child pornography on it… I don't think they'd remove them.

I'm just wondering why they dont block or at least pay attention to google, yahoo etc. search engines, because nearly everyone founds all illegal material((child)porn, copyright material) using some sort of web searching.

Yeah, I understand that they are trying to block sites that have illegal types of pornography, but they also block 100% legit sites that have no illegal content on them.
Those lists are fakes.

What makes you think that?

From: TorrentFreak
Speaking of the leak, Australia’s Broadband and Communications Minister Stephen Conroy says the list is not the official ACMA blacklist. He says that while the published list has around 2,400 blocked URLs, the official ACMA blacklist contains roughly 1,050.

“There are some common URLs to those on the ACMA blacklist,” he said. “However, ACMA advises that there are URLs on the published list that have never been the subject of a complaint or ACMA investigation, and have never been included on the ACMA blacklist,” he said.

Just because you are not fond of it doesn't mean it should be outlawed, you are taking from other people's freedom. Imagine if the government started taking your freedoms away. It is just one more step towards restricting anything. The less the government interferes with our life, the more we can go on living…

The list of banned sites is fake, saw it a couple of weeks ago and did some reasearch and thats what the news sites said…but it would be something along those lines. Personally, if the censoring passes, I'm leaving the country as soon as I can - purely out of principle

Just found this today
From: ArsTechnica
Stephen Conroy, Australia's Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, initially denied that the posted lists were accurate, noting that the official ACMA blacklist contained only 1,061 sites at the date on the leaked document, which included some 2,300 URLs. Colin Jacobs of the civil liberties group Electronic Frontiers Australia suggested that the discrepancy was likely the result of an individual vendor combining their own blacklist with the government's, and Conroy later acknowledged that an updated post was "close" to the official list. Many of the sites on the list appear to host child pornography (we declined to click through to check), but press reports have noted the inclusion of sites offering adult pornography, online gambling, and even a few MySpace pages and ordinary businesses.

would think that thoose lists are fake too, but normal porn is fully legal. so they shouldent be blocking it! its like blocking google because you can find illegal stuff on it

Hello Widget,

I do appreciate your concern for my thoughts, but I do think that you are not making proper judgment of my intentions. Also, I do feel that it would nice of you to treat me a little better.

I personally would love to have pornography banned, I am honestly tired of seeing half naked woman around the internet. Not that I am not attracted to woman, I am. But, that I intend only to look at my wife in that way.

I also do understand the freedom of rights, but in my own mind I was thinking more of an optional ban, the families and people that do not want to see any kind of that kind material can get it removed. This was in my mind. My reasoning was not solely due to my dislike of it, it was numerous things. It honestly doesn't matter ,because pornography, language, and such will still continue because people love it and so we will find means to bypass it.

Good thought, I would of course not be happy with banning any sort of "religious" site from the government. But you cannot solely segregate religion because that is not the only thing that contributes to conflicts, even though I can admit that religion has brought about conflict, it can be also be said that secular ideas/thoughts have brought about conflict as well.

I Hope that helps,

corn

Different countries have different ideas about what is appropriate.

I still remember having a talk with a German girl about how they have billboards for prostitutes, but if you say anything to deny the holocaust they throw you in jail.

She explained why having prostitution legal was better and safer, etc. She was engaged at the time, and her fiance was still back in Germany. I asked her if she was okay with him going to a legal, safe prostitute while she was away, and she left the room.

Of course, they also give a large amount of tax dollars to some churches, while they are highly discriminatory towards others like Scientology.

Strange, indeed.

As far as I'm concerned the less involved the government gets into freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of association, the better.

If people are breaking the law, then arrest them. But don't treat every person like a criminal by having the government infringe on their rights. Preventative actions like this are no better than "preventative war".

I forgot something!

These censorships are just to easy to bypass,
idk if i'm allowed to post the details here but one quick
google and i could access everything again ;)

I agree in a lot of aspects with you Corn, but imo the more the government tells us what we can and cannot do, the less freedoms we have, and it is one step closer to a totalitarian state.

An "Optional Ban" is already available thanks to free enterprise, why have the government provide a service only some would want on the backs of all? Why not let the some that want it, pay people to provide a service for them to block those kinds of sites? Thereby creating private jobs and employing people.

For the record Method, there is not separation of church and state in the United States, all the Constitution says is, "Congress shall make no law" it does not say that people cannot pray in schools or have the 10 commandments in the office of a judge.
