Anybody else notice an increase in spamming into jr. members?

Every time I log onto these forums (which isn't that often anymore), I always see quite a few people trying to get into jr. members doing something very similar to this:

And you just see a whole page of most recent posts by one user posting in the scripts/tutorial section saying "thanks dude" when they obviously didn't read/use 10 tuts/scripts in 20 minutes.

I used to not see that much of this, but I have been seeing a lot more… Is it a big problem that there are an increasing number of people trying to leech, and does something need to be done about it? Or should we just keep temp banning for it?

Maybe increased gaps between posts for registered user (to like half an hour)? Idk, just thinking.

For now, just keep temp banning them. There is a discussion going on in "SRL Site Discussion" about the JM rank, which i'll make a thread about in mods and maybe something will change. But most likely if tere is a change it'll only be when we change hosts, so go ahead with those temp bans.

Incidentally, JAD, Search links for posts never seem to work after transferring to another browser. They just say invalid search.

I don't mind taking 2 minutes to temp ban a few people every once in a while, it's just that some of them are waiting a week first, then spamming 10 posts, getting the scripts they want, and then I'm banning them. So some of the complete spammers/leechers are getting the scripts they want from the Jr. Members section before anyone is able to ban them. I just wasn't sure how big of an issue it was that this is happening.

And I've noticed something too.

After a person get's 10 posts, even if they get banned and reset of post count, their join date isn't reset.

Which means, after the ban, they can immediately go and spam 10 posts, auto-get juniour members, etc.

I guess it just comes with the territory. We can't really do much about it except keep temp banning them until we either get a better method, or just put up with it.

That's what I'm talking about, is getting a better method. Lee had a good idea about resetting the date. But what if we could make it so that after making 10 posts, they have to wait a week? That would mean that their 1 week to become a jr. member is actually 1 week after completing the 10 posts. This would give us a chance to ban them before they got what they wanted (Jr. member scripts) and would force them to truly make an effort if they want to become Jr. members.

I think that would solve our problem, or at least help it.

I agree, the ten posts before the week wait seems to make more sense. It gives us a "time for consideration" plus if they only post 10 times and then just don't post for an entire week i'd say that's a little suspicious.

I think a week after would be a bit mean. How about just a day or two after they get the 10 posts, but still a week minimum? If they spam you could reset the date too. (Dunno how hard this would be to mod in to vb)

Makes sense. 1 week (or maybe increase to like 10 days?) of longtivity, but once you get to 10 posts, you will have to wait a few days to be auto jr. member'd. That's the best solution I can think of to stopping leechers from getting into the Jr. members section.

How about a minimum of a total of 7 days as apart of the forum, and a minimum of 3 days after you reach 10 posts. 3 days is ample time for at least 1 person to notice someone spamming their way into JrMem and a week seems a goodly amount of time to be apart of the forum.

How about have a forum in SSRL that when a person gets 10 posts and they've been here for the 10 days or whatever, a thread gets created in that forum with a link to their recent posts and profile and such. They can't become JM until that thread has been oked. Would have to create a mod that would be able to automatically change a users group when that thread is oked.

Special Ed

2009-03-10 23:00:04

I think someone may have brought that up before. I think if SSRL were given permission to do that it'd be fine. Although that's all up to the admins / mods.

Ejjman

2009-03-10 23:12:52

would that be like 10-20 accounts a day? I dunno if SRL is still receving members like we used to though..

I don't know about everyone else but when I reset post count I also set join date to a week in the future.

there's a piece of infomation you guys are missing ;)

when you give he JM infraction they get a two week ban.

but after that an admin has to reset post count, so just like boreas, they ca set the join date for later.

also guys, check the thread in srl site discussion and post what you think of the test idea.

RM, what do you think about creating a few days wait after making your 10 posts? To give us more time to weed out the leechers (because right now we have no time if they wait the week first).

We could scrap the ten post idea, and have Registered Users be approved manually by SSRL+.

Would be a lot of work, I suppose… How many Registered Users are turned Junior Members each day/week? Anybody know?

Can't happen. it's been suggested before, but you'd need access to the admin panel, which of course gives you access to a whole lot of other things, even with all the possible restrictions. The most restricted it can get is to JUST modify the user accounts. But even that gives you access to rank, title, bans, and so on.

JAD, i think it's a very doable idea, which could have a good effect. Especially if it is complimented by a forum where their names and posts show up, in ssrl.

I honestly think you guys are caring too much about this. Basically suggesting that every single person has to be reviewed before getting access to the basic forum…Junior SRL Members isnt a big deal at all. It just causes more problems. Personally if I had to make 10 posts then wait a week just to access a forum about runescape, I probably wouldnt bother coming back.

I don't think that every person has to be reviewed before getting access to the forum. The Jr. members script section was created to weed out leechers. If we put a 2-3 day wait to be AUTO memberized after making 10 posts, then at least one admin/mod/dev/ssrl member will notice if a person is attempting to spam their way in and can take the appropriate action. It doesn't create more work for anyone, and they don't have to be reviewed any differently than normal, we just have to make sure that we have a chance to notice their spam before they get access into the Jr. members area.

What you're saying is that you are pretty much against the whole Jr. members idea (if I read your post properly), which I'm not sure if I'm even 100% for or against, but if we are going to have it, we should at least modify it to best suit it's purpose, to cut down on leeching.

And you don't have to wait 1 week and make 10 posts to have access to the forum at all. You just get access to better scripts if you do.
