Mine would have to be either Paul Gilbert or Jason Becker. If you've never heard of either of 'em there are plenty of videos on youtube of them showcasing their abilities.

Paul Gilbert:
-Get Out of My Yard Intro
-Terrifying Guitar Trip

Jason Becker
-Serrana
-Fifth Caprice
-Air

yes man! pink floyd all the way. then jimmy page, hendrix, eric clapton. oldies players mostly. it doesnt take that much skill to thrash somthing out. just fast fingers lol

crossback7

2007-06-24 22:24:41

Uh it most definetely does take a lot of skill to thrash something out if you want it to sound decent. Speed takes a backseat.

davis_junior

2007-06-28 01:05:13

My favorite guitarist would have to be Aaron Fink or Ben Burnley from Breaking Benjamin, whoever created the guitar solo for "Here We Are" in the new album, Phobia.

Pyro

2007-07-05 20:10:58

Well i dunno. Speed is cool but sometimes its just lame and gets boring.

I love adam jones from tool. When you first hear it doesnt sound all to great. But just some of the like swirling effects stuff is real cool. I saw them live earlier this year and it just blows your mind.

Chris cheney is ok for whoever said him :p Saw him last year and he was ok :p

Also <3 jack white. Haha he may not be the best but man he is awesome for coming up with cool little riffs. And when he wants to break free my god he unleashes hell. I saw him same day i saw living end and it was no contest. Jack just stood at front of stage while the crowd went ape and he just pulled massive 5 minute solos of all different styles. Was amazing

Also omar from mars volta/at the drive in s f-ing amazing. No one compares. Even if he does play weird shit. Saw them earlier this year. And my god. Even though the place i saw them has shitty accoustics it was just insane. Never stopping. They played for about 3 hours. With one break in the middle but other then that each song just flowed and they just kept going. It was awesome.

And just adding bass playing. cliff burton wins hands down. There is no chance anyone can beat him. Except for some people who have played slap all there life and that is there life. But yeah cliff rocked.

Also whoever said angus young was the best….. good grief…..

Im more into rock guitarists. Blues and stuff is ok. But i dunno.

crossback7

2007-07-08 01:22:31

Improvisational blues can be fun. I like Mars Volta, but yeah, they play some weird shit.

I saw Styx, Foreigner, and Def Leppard in concert about a week and a half ago. Styx was good, Foreigner sounded great for the five songs they play (pissed everyone off), and Def Leppard was amazing. Having it storm like crazy and being totally soaked just added to it. It was lightening and thundering all over, and it looked and sounded insane with the guitars going. . .Plus there was a mudslide, what more can you ask?

ghost

2007-07-14 00:35:28

Awesome. A lot of the old school guys have their own definite style. It's much harder now for a player to make that same kind of niche. That being said, nothing beats a nice guitar solo from Brian May of Queen :)

Its interesting. Everyone picks this guy. ANd in rolling stone and what not but hes somewhat like i dunno boring to me…. He is a awesome guitar player. But he never really shows it in his songs with rage or audioslave… I mean name any rage song. And with the right effects units there is no doubt that all average guitar players can play it. I learned pretty much there whole first album when i first started playing. He is great when he is just doing his thing but he never shows it…

O AND I FORGOT TO ADD THE GREATEST PLAYER/SINGER IN MY OPINION…. I cant believe i forgot him though. But matt bellamy from muse is astounding. Knights of cyndonia or super massive black hole are both awesome. And he playes really really hard stuff while singer perfect. Saw him when i saw tool (was a festival thing eariler this year) and it was the best few hours of my life in music.

I have a long list,

I like David Gilmour and Sid Barret of Pink Floyd
I like Jimmi Hendrix of Dave Mathews
I like Slash of Guns n Roses
and I like Kirk Hammet of Metallica.

The 3 guitarists of iron maiden are also good :/

I have problems with finding the BEST guitarist, so I decided to make a list. These are my favorite guitarists, no particular order.

Kirk Hammet
Eddie Van Halen
Zakk Wylde
Dimebag Darrell
Steve Vai
Slash ;)

I hope I didn't forget anyone that I like :(

Edit:

I just saw a few posts above me. I didn't know exactly what the best Guitarist/Singer meant. I took it as the best guitarist who also lead sings. I would have to say James Hetfield, or Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society) would be the best guitarists who also lead sing.

Sure, he plays fast. So does his counter part Steve Tatertots or whatever his name is. That doesn't mean he's good. I'm not saying he's bad, it's just that 60%-70% of his solos is purely finger tapping-an easily masterable technique. A little finger exercising (Grip master ftw) and about a month of practicing tapping (5-8 fingered) and you could probably do an acceptable job on his solos. To be a good guitar player you need skill, style, and songwriting ability. Along these guidelines, I'll go with:

1) Jimi Hendrix (a.k.a. Jesus :f: )
2) Jimmy Page
3) Stevie Ray Vaughn
4) Slash:cartman:
5) John Mayer (PLEASE READ: before you judge this selection, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sPmTgPvx28 Personally, I hate all of his songs, he is just an amazing guitar player. If only he played it once in a while….)

Nice point. I was learning Little wing by jimi hendrix on guitar. And told someone omfg this song is hard and they were like…. where does it get hard?… That song is such a awesome song. Not really fast. But just little notes here and there that make a perfect sound

And yes John Mayer is a awesome guitar player.

Thats the thing about Jimi Hendrix. You can learn a song and get all of the notes right in a row and in time, but it sounds horrible and absolutely nothing like the real song.

watched the dick dale thing. Interesting. It was pretty good, but a lot was just…noise. Really long bends and slides all based in a certain key. He also did the flashy over handed fretting thing that Herman Li does. I do commend him for playing the guitar with the strings upside down though…..if i were him i wouldve just switched them.

mmk, maybe these arent "the best" but they're my favs

jimi hendrix (course)–you ever try to play voodoo child?
you might know the notes but you never get it to sound like he does.. XD
slash – plays VERY well and… i like his style lol (top hat/glasses ftw)
lenny kravitz – sometimes goes a bit overboard with the love songs,
but his earlier stuff is awesome
Alex Laiho – not really my genre of music, but hes ultra-badass…
John Mayer – also goes a bit overboard with love songs ,
but his blues stuff is incredible..

hmmm… those were just kinda off the top of my head, more now =D
Joe Walsh. – you cant deny that ….
BB King – set the standard with Lucille
