On request…

23:21 [Users ##moderated]
23:21 [@SportChick] [ nalioth] [ Wizzup]
23:21 -!- Irssi: ##moderated: Total of 3 nicks [1 ops, 0 halfops, 0 voices, 2 normal]
23:21 -!- Channel ##moderated created Tue Feb 17 23:18:59 2009
23:21 -!- Irssi: Join to ##moderated was synced in 38 secs
23:21 <@SportChick> Wizzup: you hadn't really joined yet, I think :)
23:21 <@SportChick> hi nalioth and Wizzup
23:21 < Wizzup> The sync was indeed slow. And hello
23:22 < nalioth> hi
23:22 <@SportChick> nalioth: I'm going to let you take over asking the questions mostly, as I'm at work and need to do that at the same time - I'm
listening though and will interject when necessary
23:22 <@SportChick> nalioth: I had asked Wizzup to explain some of the stuff on his website
23:22 < nalioth> http://www.srl-forums.com/ is what you want to show the world?
23:23 < Wizzup> Well… that's our communities website.
23:23 < nalioth> so who are you?
23:23 < Wizzup> On that site?
23:24 < nalioth> i don't see anything resembling what SportChick has told me about your project there
23:24 < nalioth> except for the initials
23:24 < Wizzup> Ah, do you want to know what the project is?
23:24 < nalioth> no
23:24 <@SportChick> Wizzup: perhaps you should pretend we know nothing at all about your project - explain it to us
23:25 < Wizzup> You are a bit contradictive, I am confused. Anyway, SRL-Forums is a community of programmers who write macros. Our main product is the
include 'SRL'.
23:25 < nalioth> SportChick: that's not what we need
23:26 < nalioth> we need _proof_ you are a project of the sort you say you are
23:26 <@SportChick> nalioth: yes, I realized after I saw what you typed - I seem to be lagging a little, sorry
23:26 < Wizzup> Right. I am the administrator of SRL-Forums.com, my username there is "Wizzup?". Our project's public repository can be found here:
http://www.srl-forums.com/srl-repos/
23:27 < Wizzup> What way does freenode usually use to check the consitence of projects?
23:27 < Wizzup> consistency*
23:28 < nalioth> Wizzup: well, first we look at the URL given in the GCF
23:28 < nalioth> and you're has raised lots of questions, (which is why we're here)
23:28 < nalioth> your URL has raised questions
23:28 < Wizzup> Alright, I have no problems answering any. :)
23:28 < nalioth> 1) i don't see anything about a software project
23:29 < nalioth> 2) i see "cheating" all over the front page
23:30 < Wizzup> I would think the include 'SRL' is software. It is currently interpreted by a program 'SCAR'. If I have misunderstood the term software,
please correct me.
23:30 < nalioth> but your website doesn't say anything about it
23:31 < nalioth> so im confused
23:31 < Wizzup> I understand. Let me explain the 'cheating' bits first, please.
23:31 < nalioth> we need to see it at the URL, please
23:32 < nalioth> SRL is blah blah. It does blah blah.
23:32 < Wizzup> SRL is mainly used to create high level macro's for a several games, the main game is RuneScape. This can be referred to as cheating, I
like to call it creating macro's. (To Explain the cheating bit) If you feel this can cause drama and/or problems on freenode-please tell
me.
23:33 < Wizzup> I'll search for a bit with a good explanation, just a second.
23:34 < Wizzup> I have a wiki page, which is quite small:
23:34 < Wizzup> http://www.wiki.srl-forums.com/index.php/SRL-Include
23:35 < Wizzup> This forum post explains it better: http://www.villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32774
23:35 < nalioth> you are the admin of the forum, then?
23:35 < Wizzup> I am.
23:36 < Wizzup> There's also 'WT-Fakawi' (Titled SRL Leader), but we live in the same house.
23:40 < Wizzup> If you feel that SRL will or might cause problems on freenode, please inform me… :)
23:41 < nalioth> your web site could be more professionally presented
23:43 < Wizzup> Indeed, we are currently moving hosts. I am going to take over hosting fully in a few days, and I was going to make changes to the site…
Keep in mind that our current users mainly come from other, larger communities and generally have an idea about what SRL is. But I agree.
23:45 < nalioth> we don't' like "war" or "cheating" here on freenode
23:46 < Wizzup> The fact that it names war is probably the only time the word 'war' is mentioned on the entire site… An unlucky coincidence, I recon…
23:48 < Wizzup> As for cheating - the word may sound nasty, but it's generally what SRL helps people do, automate tasks, which is seen as 'cheating' by
some. I generally see SRL as an educational site to teach people how to program Pascal.
23:49 < Wizzup> (not SRL the project, but the fora)
23:49 < nalioth> i understand - now.
23:49 < nalioth> but your website could be a little more explanatory for the layman
23:49 < Wizzup> It is generalled called 'cheat' because the creators of runescape call it cheating.
23:49 < Wizzup> Yes, it should be.
23:51 <@SportChick> Wizzup: you actually might have more success moving away from the word cheating or at least minimizing its prominence on your website
23:52 < Wizzup> Yes, I will change that in the new server. (As far as I know it is only mentioned once on the front page, though.)
23:52 < nalioth> the front page is the first page seen
23:52 < nalioth> first impressions, and such?
23:53 < Wizzup> Yes - but most visitors know what they are going to expect. :-)
23:56 < Wizzup> You are still right, though… It should be changed.
Day changed to 18 Feb 2009
00:03 < Wizzup> Did you have any other questions, nalioth?
00:04 < nalioth> not here, no
00:16 < Wizzup> Ehm, is there generally anything I have to do now? :-)
00:23 < nalioth> sleep?
00:23 < nalioth> eat?
00:23 < nalioth> breathe?
00:24 -!- nalioth has left ##Moderated ["adieu"]
00:24 < Wizzup> Yes, life can be a pain…
00:30 < Wizzup> SportChick: I am confused…
00:34 <@SportChick> Wizzup: sorry?
00:34 < Wizzup> I mean, I take it the questioning is over. What is next?
00:35 <@SportChick> Wizzup: now we wait
00:35 < Wizzup> Alright. So I can go to sleep now, hehe… :-)
00:35 <@SportChick> nalioth has to finish his investigation. when it is complete, he will either approve or disapprove your group
00:36 < Wizzup> Ok, fine… :)
00:36 <@SportChick> Wizzup: you should be very pleased - many people have been in queue for over 2 years to get their groups approved
00:36 <@SportChick> nalioth did me a favor by taking yours now
00:36 < Wizzup> I am pleased. Thank you very much. He did seem severe to me, though. :)
00:37 <@SportChick> he can be a bit abrupt, but he's very good at what he does
00:37 <@SportChick> and he's a very nice guy under that skin :)
00:37 < Wizzup> I have full confidence.

Note that #ssrl will have to move to #srl-seniors, or something alike.

I don't understand…

We are being kicked off freenode because he doesn't like our website?
And why would we have to move #ssrl?

We aren't being kicked off, but SportChick told me I should apply #srl for a group on freenode… I don't know why, but she insisted.
So I had to fill in a small form, and this chat was to approve the group. :-)

I have yet to find out, mainly.
It seems that the staff will help us when we need help, that all the #srl-* channels belong to SRL, and we can have nick masks like /SRL/Staff/Wizzup.

Ah I was curious on the questions, then I kinda got the idea near the end. Would be neat to have a group like that. Its like have instant forums with subforums in irc.

This is pretty cool.

When it was going on, I was a little scared. I thought we were gonna have to make our own IRC server or something…

So, a group, eh? Neat-o.

I'll try and find some place to read up on Freenode groups and the like.

I was all confused till the end :p. I hate IRC because everybody is talking at once. He should have let you present the whole case before interjecting. Anyways, group sounds good :)

One thing.

SRL has a tendency to troll. Just a little… If we're going to be part of a group, we're going to have to change things. A full and complete abstinence towards trolling, or anything of the like. Any complaints from other channels, and it's the ban hammer for our members. We'll put 'Trolling other channels will not be tolerated!' in the topic if we have to…

We will. The main channel #srl will be much more formal, and I'd kindly link the people who like to troll to #srl-offtopic. The group has to first be accepted. To be accepted, I also need to upload a .html to SRL, but I can't do that now. (Which quite sucks to be honest.)

Why would they ban us for that? They should know, frankly, that the actions of a community are not always directions the leader gives.

Also, what group are we a part of? We aren't joining anything.

humph… #srl, #srl-senior, #srl-dev, #srl-school all seem fine to me.
But #srl-offtopic? i think that would pretty much kill #srl. #srl-school will be giving help and lessons, so in #srl it will mostly be just the communitty "offtopic-ing" anyway. And what is "on topic" in #srl?

I agree with robot, every community has trolling and it does not necessarily mean the leaders are responsible for it (althought maybe they should keep a hand on it?)
But if we keep going that way we will pretty soon have #srl-debates, #srl-OtherCommunities, #srl-general, #srl-scripts … and I don't really think we have enought IRC-Active SRLers to get conversation in all those channels. Remember, one active channel is better than 5 dead ones.
you see where i'm going?

Also, #srl-dev i'd just like to say i'm not really sure how active it'd be. I mean, when it's something about mod+ it's said in #ssrl, when it's something dev+ it's said in #ssrl and yet ssrl doesn't always have a conversation going on. I think we all are careful/smart enought not to say things that we don't want slipped even to ssrl (and seeing it from a mod's point of view there are very few… if any most of the time).

#srl should be the official channel, and that channel should not give a bad impression.
#srl-offtopic isn't a bad idea, at all…

Just because #srl is the main channel, doesn't mean it has to be the most active channel. To be honest, it makes sense that if it were to become a grouped set of channels, that there would be an official lobby-like channel. It could be for greetings, people asking about the community rather than the scripting or a number of things that are based around SRL, but not Scar. Having an offtopic channel then also means that there can be more relaxed rules to general conversation as it won't interrupt helping people or serious discussions.

At having a grouped system in general, I like it. From what the FAQ says, groups are much more like permanent features of the server and get a few nice bonuses, so I think it's awesome.

Well, we can assume a few things: People new to SRL would be new to IRC, so we can assume that there nicks are not registered. Secondly, that people who wish to visit the SRL IRC know what most runescape communities are like.

Now given this, we can have a "non-registered user redirect" to #srl-lobby where the topic tells users about the project and why they were redirected. It's not necessary that people be in the channel. However, the best approach would just be to keep the single #srl channel…

R0b01 I disagree. Users familiar with the IRC scene would just autojoin the main channel and the offtopic channel. Which means that the #SRL can be used for SRL discussion as well as presentation of the project.

It's still a bad idea. Sure, every #srl-* channel belongs to SRL, but…? Why bother? They'd see the "good" presentation of the site, come into the forums, and see the real site.

Damn right we can, or it wouldn't happen.

I like the direction mixster is going with it. SRL would have more standing in the irc community - it might even help to gain more people in irc. I wouldn't mind getting some other gaming channels and such to play other online games.

Many possibilities to this, but I think going to a group is a big enough benefit. Only downside I see is srl people trolling other channels has to stop - i never did it waste of time, but many others enjoy it.
