We are going to have loads of these topics before it's gonna have any effects, but please! When you vote you don't have to hurry anywhere, don't give a quick skim over it and vote depending on whether it looks good or not, just don't vote if you don't feel like looking at it well.

Today's example! Antti Mies. Note that this thread is not intended to harm the applicant in any way, just make the voters sad - let's have some highlights of the poll, shall we? :)

Here is his script, doesn't matter if you look at it yet. Now some quotes from our voters -

I voted yes. He seems to know what he is doing

Nothing else, could be changed or altered this is the App of the month! This script is actually at a standard of an expert scripter. YES!

Good Job, liking it. Good use of TPAs and the use of ColorSpeed2Tolerance function.

If you can use that function well you probably have a good understanding of SRL functions

Now to the facts that we've all waited for :)

a) The script doesn't use multiplayer, I actually lived when that was one of the requirements and one of the main concepts of SRL.

b) The only place the script uses If Not LoggedIn Then Exit or something similar are it's antiban procedures! Sure, it's stupid to do antiban while logged out, but how about trying to enter the boat when you're logged out?

c)
procedure GoInBoat;
Yes, excellent use of TPAs, how about failsafes? Oh right, they were just a trend? Well, he uses failsafes for the GoInBoat procedure in the GetInBoat procedure, you're gonna feel clumsy not having a handy boolean for such an important part of the script.

d)
If FindSymbol(x, y, 'magic shop') then Mouse(x+22, y+10, 4, 4, True);
else ?

Enjoy.

We have been told to look at the peoples attitude aswell. And the members standards are constantly on the rise, so it doesnt mean members loosing spine, it means that members are just doing as they are told, and being less tough, imo.

You don't have to take it literally, and please do not be offended by being quoted in my post.

Member standards rise depending on how members vote.

yeah i dislike his Walking to void and back to Boat. WalkToCenter can probably be improved as well.

Think outside the box,
Today's example!

This is not about him, although this thread may affect your opinion on his script.

Potential, attitude, and script functionality is what matters most imo. Who cares if it doesnt use DDTM's and TPA's if the script still does everything its meant to.

but still when people see DDTMs and TPAs they forget about everything else.

2009-02-13 09:39:27

I think this script is worthy of SRL-Members, even if it may not contain all fail safes, you can see that he has put effort in it and he uses lots of SRL's functions.

Mjordan

2009-02-13 09:47:02

Well I agree that his script is worthy of SRL membership. I don't know the person and haven't seen him around, so don't know about attitude.

And about the multiplayer, why would the script need multiplayer? Who uses multiple players at Pest Control?

n3ss3s

2009-02-13 09:57:31

I said that this script is only an example, nothing wrong with it, my personal vote could differ from yours, but this thread is about the voters' comments. If I wanted people to comment his application I would link there…

And about the multiplayer, why would the script need multiplayer? Who uses multiple players at Pest Control?

Outside the box please…

True, I've noticed members are being more easy on the apps coming in, which is why I never vote :)

But in this script I think he is worthy of coming in to SRL-members, as I have just used that script and gotten a 9 hour proggy. He also has the proper attitude/determination to improve his scripts.

2009-02-13 13:00:53

I agree with you n3ss3s, I definately think there has been a few people lately who got in/almost got in, that shouldnt of.

I kind of think that I was one of them. Looking back at my App. Script now…it doesnt look good lol.

But I have learned alot sense then.

On the Example App. that you used I believe he is good enough, but there have been a few that I totally agree on.

gerauchert

2009-02-13 13:44:00

I dont think its a lack of backbone at all. When I look at scripts, I look at the genuine effort put into them and the attitude of the scripter.

Now, if I see a script with piss poor standards, poor techniques of accomplishing tasks, and a lack of overall quality then I would vote no. Scripts should be well written to be "SRL member" quality, however, no one is perfect and there will be some general mistakes that could be improved upon. You may call it "spine-less", but it is far from it.

If you feel that some people are being accepted too easily, then lets have a vote on "stricter requirements" and move away from the vague requirements that we have now.

2009-02-13 14:37:21

How does the topic of the first post relate to the lack of a spine?

Naike

2009-02-13 15:30:01

I'm with n3ss3s on this one, We were told to think before voting and actully see if the guy deservs it..

I think people vote yes becuase of what the script do, not the code ;)
Example, Pc script - Many people goes "Omg he made a pc script.." and votes yes straight away ;)

How does the topic of the first post relate to the lack of a spine?

Cause alot of people follow the crowd while voting instead of making their own decisions

I have to agree with n3ss3s on this one. I remember when i applied i took several months to work on my app and it still wasnt a complete script. I thought that was iffy at best. Then I find out from the people that voted that my app was very good. But then I also discovered once I got in, looking through the other apps, that it was not very hard to get in. I probably couldve saved myself a month of scripting if I had known the level that the members accept at.

Although I havent voiced my opinion that much around the boards i have and still believe that the bar is set too low. I feel a lot of members use attitude as a means to accept a member and disregard the script. IMO the choice to accept someone based solely on attitude should be left to the admins/elite. I also feel that there are too many simple yes/no w/o any explanation. I admit that i have fallen victim to this too so im not saying i dont do it. But i feel we as the 'higher' members of this community should put more pride into accepting new members and evaluating them with more standards and merit.

And about the multiplayer, why would the script need multiplayer? Who uses multiple players at Pest Control?

Well some of us here got multiple p2p accounts, or got friends with p2p accounts and want a nice proggy, or they want to train their whole p2p army up.

I highly agree. If runescape is getting more difficult, then scripts should get better, thus raisinh the bar.

Disagree. I am not going through all this again. This is what I do: I browse a script, I dont even run it, just browse it, see if it contains ideas, concepts. Next I go user profile, check out the applicant, check for use of language, check for attitude. Then usually I vote yes, because most apps are genuine these days. Not many hoaxes around anymore. If you want my further opinion on these matters, I have posted them twice.

But hey: everybody is entitled to his own opinion. Simply because I am a lil' older than most of you, doesnt make my judgement more nor less :)

Eh, I think I voted yes. I was in a good mood.

I agree with you n3ss3s.

Why I usually vote no...

Sorry guys was a little too quick at looking at this script, but I still retain my vote.

Maybe he doesn't have as many failsafes or multiplayer, but I think he's at the point where he would know how to add them when the time necessitates. they are REALLY not that hard of concepts to master.

And he's thought beyond the box with the use of more complex functions and procedures. That's a what an app demands I suppose (although fundamental knowledge is necessary as well).

I haven't really been voting lately but the past few ones I have tried showing what they could do to improve it. There have been two people who I voted yes on because their attitude was OUTSTANDING and their script was pretty decent too. I feel like I got by on a not so good script to be honest. Oh, Nava, you voted yes on mine lol xD

Ive already had my rant also in another thread. Although mine was the opposite. "Voting no when the applicant was fine".

IMO I think its silly to expect master scripts from people on the "outer". As you get more and more higher up in SRL, you are also exposed to better and better scripts. Ones were going to be private but ill let out to members only etc.

SRL Members isnt about being elite. Thats what the developers are for. Members is for people who CAN script, and look like they will continue giving to the community. Not someone who will be a future dev.

I know what you mean Pyro, but in my opinion sticking to the basic… "backbones?" of SRL is important. Well, times change, not that they are bad apps or anything…

I think that the member was right in getting in, because the script did show good concepts and did show knowledge of SRL/SCAR.

Although I do see where you're coming from. There were obvious things wrong with that script. Instead of skimming through the script in less than a minute and clicking the yes button because most people already voted yes and the script used TPA's, people should try to look for ways to help the applicant improve (I'm not saying that people don't).

Any srl member should have been capable of looking through that script and finding at least 1 area of improvement. If everything wrong with a script is pointed out, it can be fixed, the script can become a better script, and the scripter can become a better scripter. Though, just because there's a few things wrong with a script doesn't necessarily mean that the person shouldn't get in, but you should still point them out.

When I voted more actively on apps I would always point everything out wrong on an app, whether I was going to vote yes or no, and many people did the same. Voting doesn't help the applicant, comments do.

By the way, you need one of those voter cups :) You've been going through apps since Clarion v0.5 ;)

Wow i just kinda had an idea coming from JAD's statement… I am well aware that this will 99% not happen but maybe im wrong. What if part of the application process was looking at a script and showing/demonstration/fixing the script. If JAD said that any srl member should have been capable of finding improvements in the script then any applicant worthy of members should also be able to find improvements in scripts.

So (again probably never going to happen) but what if we had a 'stadard' script or set of scripts that the applicant had to review/improve. Idk tell me what you think?

I would not want to put the applicant through that kind of torment. I personally hate reading and modifying other people's code just because it's not my code so I always have trouble reading it.

I would actually love that idea. Personally, I flip out when I see bad code. That gave me an idea to expand on your idea :P. What if there was a place for new people (by new I mean like first scripts) and the members applicants have to edit? Just an idea.

Cut em2 it

n3ss3s

2009-02-22 03:41:22

Because for sure 3/4 of them will be tards that won't read the stickies and so think that they can apply with their edited scripts, and the 1/4 applies without a script because they think editing in the section is enough.
