Here's what I need to know:

Compatible with Vista Home Premium 64-Bit?
Is Steam free?
Is Steam/CS:S a resource hog?
Can I play it with a 1750MB Intel GMA 4500MHD Dynamic Video Memory Technology 5.0 Video Card?
What Counter Strike should I buy?
Do I need any tweaks?

Well. Since I play with Hy, him and I would have fun with you :3

In order:
1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Depends on your specs. Depends on what you mean by a "hog". Depends on what you want to do in the background of gameplay. More details and I can answer.
4) Try this: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest on that computer. Based on MY knowledge, I don't think that the graphics accelerated will do.
5) CS:S. Only way to go. Most people argue that 1.6 is for better people. I think 1.6 is crap. I've had it since the day it came out as a separate game and not a mod. I still vote CS:S.
6) Tweaks? Well if you google ways to increase FPS or look on FPSBanana.com for stuff, thats what I do. Take quality down, HDR off, Bloom off, make it so the chambers to show animation, stuff like that. My frames are easily 200+ then.

Hope this helps!

CS:S isn't on systemrequirementslab.

In the background, I won't do anything. But I don't want my C:\ filled with crap.

I prefer 1.6. In 1.6 its more about aiming and knowing how to spray and wall spots, but in source its more about knowledge of the map and knowing where to be when, and when to rotate.

Both are great games, and CSS is only like what, 20$ and 1.6 is only 10$. I would say buy both and try them both.

Also, I like 1.6's netcode better.

I'm just worried about buying them and it not being compatible with the video card, atm.

It's like, the original vid card that came with the laptop (chipset, I think you call it).

Capricorn, I may buy both. However, idk if it will work with my laptop's video card.

I know that I can play RS in HD.

Simtoon, I already told you I don't want Linux.

Getting Linux won't change what I think about the game.

I need real help.

I run CS1.6 with a FPS > 80 all the time with a ATI 200 express onboard chip.

So, being a beginner, should I get CS1.6?

I want to play with you guys at SRL :P

Capricorn

2009-01-21 23:12:34

Well its up to you which game to play. I prefer cs1.6 and source is pretty different from 1.6.

2009-01-21 23:16:45

I hate to disagree Capricorn :(
Most people just don't want to deviate from 1.6 because its what their used to. Aiming is no different. If you can show me logical and coding proof that hitboxes are different, then show me. About aiming at walls, thats just no skill…No one just points a gun at a wall and prefires and hopes a kill.

Do the website I gave you for Half Life 2 and Half Life.
CS 1.6 is a Half Life game and CS:S is a Half Life 2 game.
Those will give you an accurate measurement.

Wewt! On Half Life 2, my computer is like, to the max on that chart :P

Thanks guys. I'll be purchasing it online tomorrow.

Its not about the hitboxes (although they are bigger because the models are also bigger), and just so you know, I played source before I played 1.6. Of course aiming is no different, but the spray patterns are. And yeah, no one points a gun at a wall and hopes for a kill. Who is talking about that? I have no idea about you, but I play with headphones and after playing for a while I can get pretty good ideas on where players are, I just have to improve on what angles to shoot at. And if you think it takes no skill to aim through the wall…

Crazy Deagle Headshot.

And I even told him to get both games to see which one he likes better, because they are on two different engines. Let him decide which one he enjoys more.

I've heard something about css have bigger head (hit) box, but wtf…

2009-01-22 17:28:53

1.6 is junk(It may have been good in 2000, but not that good now..). I played it for a few years before getting Source back in December '07. Much better all around..

Capricorn

2009-01-22 18:40:55

Why do you consider it junk?

Main

1.5 better than cs1.6

TViYH

No need to turn this thread into a bash thread.

Mod, please close?

nothing beats CS:S. I've played all counter strike versions and CS:S far outweighs the others in skill factor, graphics and modifications.

I think CS 1.6 can run with almost any videocard

TViYH

Well, I have a basic onboard video card and CS:S works for me.

You will prob. run it easiliy but if you cant run it decently, you can still use a config.
On this site, you can find an easy tut. how to configurate CS:S for the best performance…

http://www.spawnpoint.com/forums/article_chatter/6867-new_blog_simple_css_tweak_guide.html

+ on this site you can find some other tweaks to gain a few fps…–>its for 1.6
but most of the commands will work in CS:S

(the first lines are in dutch but the last/most important part is in english)
