Mental Health Center

Overnight a "Mental Health Center" has seen the light @ SRL. An ambitious project initiated by Hobbit with help of newbie Moderator ruroken. There are subgroups for:
- Insomnia
- Suicide
- Drugs
- Homosexuality and Mental illness (?)
- Personality Disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Social Anxiety
- Anger
- Paranioa
- Depression
- Bipolar Disorder
Now, personally I dont suffer from any of the abovementioned, but some people do, and need (professional) help.
Question:
Does this belong to SRL? Please vote!
Awaiting the response of the SSRL team, I have disabled the board for now, and also disabled rurokens moderatorship.
IMHO, it is not bad to have such a board, but it looks like a kind of overkill. Do we need to play the counselors role here explicitely? Moreover, can we?

I personally don't think so.
SRL isn't a health help forum by any count. This is a computer programming language forum, and should not be used for health problems.
If it's really necessary, i'm sure a 1 on 1 would prove more beneficial than a whole sub-forum for this thing. And the topics for the forums are extremely serious. I don't think anybody has the maturity (Well, most of the people at least.) , or the experience to help you if you're really suicidal.
As you said:
but some people do, and need (professional) help.
We might be clever, but we are not professionals ;)
Just my two cents.

Thse subjects are very, very serious. If you are suicidal, or schizophrenic, I'm pretty sure SRL can't help you. You'll need professional help for that, not some 14 year olds at some forum who lack the experience (and some of them the maturity) to help.
Btw, is 11 subgroups not a tiny bit of overkill? I don't think there are more than 2 suicidal persons @ SRL (just a rough estimate, could really be off), so do those all need their own section?
A small section to post about personal problems is a good idea however, but a complete 'Mental Health Center'? Overkill and unwanted. It'll only cause worse.

Probably will do more harm than good..
EDIT: How on earth is mental illness connected with homosexuality?

Yes!
There are sometimes when life gets one slightly down, and you might want to talk to others about it. Sharing it with someone that you have absolutely no relations to whatsoever, might ease getting feelings out.
I do not think that this board will be for dealing with serious issues, I think (and hope) that you focused it a bit wrongly - but I would really, really like to see something dedicated purely for discussion about life's many sides, both ups and downs. The so-called "wrong" thing is, if I haven't made it clear, is that serious issues will preferably not be tried to be dealt with there.
But, I absolutely support this 110% and think this is a great idea, as this aswell will bring the active members of this community closer together and give them the opportunity to share (personal?) thoughts ++ ..
And, lol@"Homosexuality and Mental illness (?)", might want to change that :p

Disorder in their brain telling them to be attracted to the wrong sex (wrong as in goes against nature). Sounds like a mental disorder to me.

No, this has no place here at SRL. Completely irrelevant to anything else here. We're not a self help site, we wouldn't benefit as a community in any way from the addition of these forums - anyway, if people have problems there's plenty of places existing IRL and online for them to go to which would ultimately be better off for them in the long run - as they can be offered proper support from professionals. A big NO from me…..
BTW - why was this forum made without posting in the staff forum, or any other sort of discussion? If every admin just went and made whatever forum they felt like at the time, the forums would be a very messy, unorganized and chaotic place…..

I say no also. There will be a part of SRL users that take it as crap and just posts stupid ass stuff to people that would make their situation worst.
Personally for me, if I had a problem I probably wouldn't be going to the computer screen to find 'closure/help'. That what real life friends are for, to make you feel better and raise you up when you are down.
On the other hand though, some people might now have any friends really and are just stuck on computer, it could be good for them.
Overall I would say no though.

Homosexuality and Mental illness (?)
doesn't really seem to be the way to start it o.O
i don't think this should be added, as said before some of thoe problems are really rather serious, and how many o us would know how to deal with it? and what are you going to tell a suicidal person over the internet? Life is actually good? - not so sure it'd work.
I mean having a ranting forum, sure, why not, but not make it this serious. We have no capacity to deal with this, as in, no experience. maybe a few out of all SRL would say somethign that would do some good, but many people would jsut throw the "mentally disturbed" ones in the completly wrong direction.
i suggest we use the BBQ Pits for this r perhaps just a ranting forum, and whoever wants to help does.
If the intention is to just talk about these things we can always use the debates forum.
Sorry hobbit.

We don't know enough to give professional help with guaranteed results, it would be the same as talking about mental problems in the public, someone can just jump in and even say something as a joke, which could offend the one in need of help and lead to something…

Haha it seems "Homosexulaity and mental illness" needs to be explained.
Being not straight can cause tremendous stress on young people, social pressures, what will their parents and friends say etc. I cant speak from experience but I am aware this occurs. The gay suicide is higher than straight suicide for a reason.
I had the idea for the group because goddamn it I need a purpose in life, and helping people works for me. I understand that I'm a nonprofessional, however I am an enthusiast (as it effects me directly and I want to go into the field of psychology) and I talk with some very, very smart psychologists every week. I have lots of notes, tips, tricks, ways to survive etc. And I'm sure Hobbit and many others have the same to bring to the table.
1 in 4 people will struggle with mental illness. Believe me, there are mentally ill people here, you just don't know about them.
I'll be back with more, I just have to go do things now. You guys are making a mistake as far as I can see it… except you EvilChicken… :p

And what happens when that 1 kid that is thinking about suicide or w/e comes to SRL looking for help and we try to give it to him. Then you get 1 stupid smartass that posts something such as "Go kill yourself you fucking douchebag, it will make the world a better place" or something offensive like that. He then goes and kills himself…
I would rather him kill himself rather than coming to SRL and b/c of SRL it pushing him over the edge and killing himself.
Hell with the world today, something like that happens and next thing you know SRL/Fawki/Dankness is being sued.

Well, to avoid legal trouble we'd have a disclaimer.
Secondly, why the hell would someone do that? This isnt 4chan man. And what about the other posts that tell him to call a helpline? The other posts that touch his heart? The other posts that let him know WE care.
I would rather him kill himself rather than coming to SRL and b/c of SRL it pushing him over the edge and killing himself.
This is exactly the kind of attitude that stigmatizes mental illness. "I don't want to deal with it. Who cares if I could help?" A little selfish no?
I promise you that there will be NOTHING to push anyone over the edge. SilverLining killed himself a while back… I would like to help stop that kind of thing. Bbl.

Not really, he's just stating he'd prefer it if SRL wasn't blamed for having someone commit suicide….another thing is Ruroken, if you want to help people in these situations - why not go to the self help forums that already exist specifically for this purpose? Or even volunteer at some youth centers or something local to where you live. You'd be of more help on those forums, replying to posts from people who are in such trouble IRL that they seek out a self help forum, rather than here, posting tutorials on the off chance that someone here has that problem and will see your post.

Wow, really? Seriously guys?
We are by no means anywhere near certified to help people with these things, and we could face heavy legal repercussions for this.
If this is a joke, I see no funny in it whatsoever.

It isn't a joke, but I doubt there's any legalty issues involved as far as no-one is killed because of what someone has said, although I think when you register and account it states that the board staff isn't responsible of what users post…

Your statement that homosexuality is a mental disorder - just cause something differs from the norm doesnt make it a disorder…its just semantics really, we could argue all day, I just think it's the wrong term to use. But let's stay on topic :)
No. Period.
SRL is about Runescape cheating. With a few little extras chucked in such as gfx which have always been part of RS cheating boards.
UNLESS you want to turn SRL into a "General" chat board. Dont do it. Hell infact dont do it even if you want SRL into a general chat board. What role do 12 - 16 year old kids (Plus a few olders, plus a few fawkis) in helping depressed people. No one here AFAIK have any education in any of the above topics.

I was just saying that I thought it could be considered a disorder not because it differs from the norm, but because it goes against what nature intended. But sure, on topic.. I don't think we should have this, we're not pros, etc.

If SRL is solely about Runescape cheating and we are so against anything else existing, then why do we even have the "Waste Of Time Out" Section? None of that has to do with runescape cheating.
And its not trying to cure people but its to help them. Those are just some FAQ threads to start, not sections. And its meant to tell people about all the different options they have and so that they have a place to go and talk to people with a common interest (SRL) who are having the same problems they are.
I myself suffer from Depression, bi-polarism and paranoia. You have no clue how much it has helped talking to people who go through the same thing. When you get to the point where when you're driving and you wonder if its even worth turning the wheel to go around the corner or not be bothered with life anymore and just let go. That is an extremely scary point to be at, I've been there.
And the whole "Go find some real help" statement.
I never knew what options i had, and someone who is feeling like that isnt going to google and look up for help. Thats not something that goes through people head. And there is no better help then people who have been there.
And the whole sexuality thing I am unsure about it because its a very hot topic and not really a disorder. Someone had requested it to more talk about mental issues coming from ridicule and torment from being homosexual.
Why don't we ask SRL what SRL wants and make this poll public?
Oh and for Claw… I WAS WRONG to do this without discussion first.

No.
After a suicide, it is not uncommon for the parents or police to go through the computer. If, for example, something was misunderstood and someone commited suicide, SRL and its members would take the blame.
EDIT: The parents would like to blame anyone, and seeing as this is an active community, anything related to "help" would try to be pinned to the wall with knives.
I honestly cannot believe we are even thinking of putting it in here.
Hobbit i understand what your saying. But SRL is just NOT the place for it…It will turn into a troll fest. Not only that but a ban fest.
I do not see what answers you are going to get from a demographic that is made up of EARLY teens if not pre teens.

To properly understand the following: "you" is ment to address the mass, not a person.
1. Pathos.
It is way too Ambitious. Like it has been said, there isn't enough potential, spirit nor life-experience (and thus respect) aboard to maintain a proper level of communication. Beside, why not subboards for arachibutyrophobia, overweight, xenophobia, transsexuals, beastiality or abnormal fear for extraterrestrials?
2. Danger.
It is dangerous for an unexperienced community. It has been illustrated by the fact that even the header of one of the Threads "Homosexuality and Mental Illness"… raises discussion.
How much do you want to dispose yourself? Moreover, how much will others take advantage of this knowledge? As you all hopefully know, you need to be very careful with your online affairs. It is all one big copy/paste/send-to-all frenzy, so you should choose your words with care. But alas, the majority of young people express freely, unfiltered almost. Which is fine when it comes to cheating and the good things in life, but runs terribly short in the "difficult" side of life. If I'd exposed myself as a homosexual, would you feel the same about me today? I know the answer, it is no!!! Why? Because you dont know me at all, in fact you don't know anyone out here. We aren't "friends", we are "chatters", "posters". We silenty read each others thoughts. We just happen to be in sync on some subjects. We don't see, hear, feel nor smell each other's presence. Therefore, we shouldn't share these vulnerabilities. It is dangerous and will be misinterpreted because of lack of interaction. I nor anyone out here cannot help anyone out here, because I simply do not know you. Not Enough Info (NEI?)
3. Responsibilty.
As mentioned in the privacy statement, written by Flyboy and me, WE DO NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY! If any of you crazy youngsters wishes to take his own life, fine, do so by all means, see if I care, BUT KEEP ME AND THIS BOARD OUT OF IT! This may sound a lil' harsh to some of you, but frankly speaking, I don't give a damn. It is the truth. SRL is a fun place, with lots of youngsters and lots of drama. At some times even more drama than we can handle. But it is in balance.
In all seriousness: SRL is not the place to venture your problems. If you need a hide-out and dispose yourself, don't do it with an ambitious "Mental Health Center", but make a "What's eating Me?" or "More about Me" or "I have a Problem" forum and see what will come of it. Start lightly, see if it works…
…and if it doesn't….go seek help. Professional help.
