What would be the use of a Shoutbox if we have IRC?
I don't think I have seen you on IRC, though.

Some people are 2 lazy to download IRC, or are just to stupid to use it.

It's dead because people arent online. If you put a shoutbox in those people will still be offline.

nonono you can see when users are online at the side and there is still aload of people on i think my self it is a good idea we should atleast give it ago

Those people online may just have left SRL on when they went? I dont see the point in a shoutbox? It's pointless.

Holy moley, look at all the people online! A shoutbox is pointless, it really is.

I think a shoutbox would be usefull as some people cant be asked logging into chat .

Nope from me. The website is somewhat cluttered as it is, we don't need another feature that may/may not get used when it is already provided through another service.

We have problems paying for bandwidth as it is, we don't need a shoutbox to add to the problems.

I second that.

I dont think a ShoutBox itself is a bad idea, but like Myles said, we already have enough problems.

Shoutbox == spambox.

Rubix

all a shoutbox would do is cause people to spam their thread links in there, or in mixster/jason2gs 4chan links :p

Host the shoutbox somewhere else and load it with an iframe or something? I think its not such a big problem… and it would be a nice add to the site.. But idk, that's what i think.

and hy… don't ever click a link that hy gives on irc!(unless it has been verified good)

Lol. I usually verify them as good.

But my laptop is a beast, and even if it's really bad it doesn't affect me :P

But yeah. I think a shoutbox would be noice if it was externally hosted and locally viewed. That is, hosted on a free website and showed as an iFrame. IRC is too difficult for some people. It wouldn't be too much of a hassle, I'm sure. Who knows. Maybe it would dumb down on useless questions?

No.

Raymond and Markus' posts sum up my feelings on the matter.

I would like a shoutbox. I think it would be fun, and would be nice to chat to people that don't get on irc and what nots. It wouldn't have to have a large log, just make it save like 25 lines of text?

flaminhaz

2009-01-14 16:45:00

but what would be the point in hosting it on another website? if people can't be bothered to go on IRC why will they go to another page, and besides no one is really going to go to another page ask a question and keep checking back for an answer. that's what IRC is for! (well, sort of)

TViYH

2009-01-14 16:47:13

flamin, stfu.

It would be hosted on a different site but viewed here via an iFrame.

I think that if you're too lazy to get on to IRC, then you either don't need help or just want to spam. That's just my opinion though.

Maybe they can't, maybe they don't know how.

easy fix… direct them to yakman's tut on how to get on irc… i don't know if i would want a shoutbox, because they seem kinda dumb but that is just imo…

Why not to put a shoutbox - don't like it don't use it? just like reflection!

That could be reversed to: don't like not having one, make your own. I vote no. A shoutbox would cause dependence. People would stop using the search button and just post there. Causing you to have to look through tons of useless junk that could be fixed with 20 seconds of searching.

Nobody's forced to look at reflection stuff every time they view the forum.

What makes you think you'll be forced into looking at the shoutbox? Just keep scrolling down until you find what you want to see. :duh:

Aser

If you want a substitute for IRC, but think it is too noob not friendly then you could always make a Yahoo chat room right? Just go in with the IM and make a room called SRL.

Usually shoutboxes are on every single page at the very top or on the side - meaning I'll have to look at it on every single page.

If it's placed anywhere else, it won't be successful and shouldn't be implemented anyways.

That's true, but you could just ignore it.. also, i'm pretty sure that if it's implemented, you will finally end using it :P

Umm, no.

We are already having issues with the amount of stuff running on the server i.e. The server is already running at a constant 100% CPU use. It would just lag the site down even more.

Anyways, Hy71194 already has mibbit on his server where it automatically directs you to #srl you just have to type in your nick.

booo. I don't even like the one on Freddy1990's site. All its used for is spam and silly uncoolness. Theres not much difference from just making a post, so its just one more uneeded thing that people will ignore.

No. A big bandwith waste, we have IRC, it'd just be full of spam and retardation, it's useless (no useful conversations, just random stupid "LOLOL" or "wat r srl missing error?" style messages), and really, if someone is too stupid or lazy to download an IRC client I don't think I even want to hear what they have to say.
