Yes, these seem to be popular right about now. I'm not very sure how many of these "clans" exist, as the more secretive may be more successful and subtle, but odds are a good many go down the drain because of lack of members or lack of cooperation between the members. I was thinking about starting one of these (without it breaking up :p).
To me it's not really important if I make that much money (although it may be to you), but that I learn how economies work, besides the basics and all of that. I plan on learning how stuff really works, why common sense isn't always the answer.
I'd be willing to let some people join me (after all, I need some buying power) but I'd ask, just like other clans, that they not say what we are buying or when we are buying. This really isn't because of money, least for me, anyways, but it'd ruin the experiment (It'd also ruin the money-making aspect of it – people would buy out what we are buying because we'd already have a good portion). There really isn't much criteria (money etc) but I ask that you have at least a few million or so so you could try to buy some of the stuff we'd do, as the only things worth experimenting on are non-gatherables which are usually 100k+ each. As for everything else? Don't sell everything if it looks like it's dropping. I've heard that is normal. When I really do pick an item, I'd ask anyone that joins me to try to invest into that also. You're free to leave you some spare money to go PK'ing and whatnot, you don't need to try to hide it, but unless we either have lots of people or a few rich people (I myself don't actually have that much money), we'd need everyone to cooperate.
What is good, however, is that you don't need much money to bot :)
I'm simply telling everyone my idea for now, this probably won't start RIGHT AWAY, but I plan on having it start. So far, I'd like to keep it in members (I know you guy'll listen, and you're not complete idiots yourselves and will be able to help choose) to see how this might fare.
So, RIGHT NOW, I'd like you to post how much money you could possible spend… And the recommended trend you'd look for. (I am actually making a program to parse the GE results)

I guess he was in a bit of a hurry when he made the opening post…
For those who don't know, it works like this: Everybody gets together and buys all [or rather, a lot] of a certain item. That, theoretically, makes the price skyrocket, due to a lack of volume. After a short while [couple of weeks, perhaps] everyone sells, all at the same time. ["At the same time" to ensure max profits for everyone.]
That, in turn, will force the price back down. Whether it's down below what it was before, or right at what it was before, I don't know. I've never done a drop before. But R0b0t1 mentioned on the IRC if he thought it'd be a good idea to make our own merchanting clan (MoD, but better, and more organized), and I said yes. We then began picking out a name, and arguing over which server the IRC channel would be hosted on ^_^
I'm not going to disclose either, however, without R0b0t1's permission. He's the leader of this project.

Free to play items would seem hard to merchant. What would be a rare item that is free to play? We're not talking actual rares here – more like combat equipment and some high-level consumables. I was thinking maybe… er… what is it… "bad" dragon equipment? How many people actually use that? Anyway, what I mean by "trends" is: do you look for a negative correlation, positive correlation, no correlation, or static correlation.

This will not work, even if you could raise the price of something it wouldn't do you any good because it would sell back at the same exact price or even less.
For this to ever even feasibly work you'd would need to buy at least 80% to control the re-buying price which is impossible unless you have a few thousand people investing 1 mil each at least… and to coordinate anything anywhere near effective is impossible.
Sorry to say, but having people buy a lot of something to raise the price and resell is a guaranteed waste of time and probably money.
Unless you can devise another method this will not work.
I can not currently think of any but if I do I'll say…
If a feasible plan is constructed I could put int 1-7mil or something
Edit:
I could of seen something the following scenario working before the removal of unbalanced trade and the invention of the G.E.
About 10 people all go and buy Abby whips for the standard price of 1000k and then go into World 2 in Falador garden and sell them for 1050k all advertising at the same time thus each member profiting 50k per a whip sold and controlling the price in a selected small isolated market
but trying to influence the GE is going to impossible but there should still be a way to use our resources to make money…. hmmm…

The same algorithm that makes the price of something rise will also make it lower once you sell everything (if you are ever able to)
However with supply and demand of limited items this may be possible because of temporary inflation(interesting concept)… so say you used seers rings.. you would still need a crap load of investments which I don't think are sufficient enough just yet maybe if more people join I might.
I guess what I'm saying is you really need to come up with an
official detailed elaborate plan.

All you need is enough of an investment to "buy out" the market and keep it that way (buying at maximum) for a few days or weeks. The price rises, then you sell the items for quite a bit of profit each and the price plummets. M.O.D. has used this to their advantage for Mud Staves, and it looked like it worked out nicely.

This happens:
1. Merching clan picks item and buys at max a lot
2. other players begin noticing and also buy at max
3. merching clan waits a bit while other membs try to make $ (but fail)
4. merching clan dumps items at highest, players buy
5. massive flood of items happens, price drops.

I'd like to say it won't be everyone, some people are bound to leak the item or there is a large chance they will, not to pick on anyone ;)
I'd like to point out something about what Markus said. The price drops only because the people who bought them are selling, and receiving money. You can slow this by selling near max, hopefully…

Umm IceFire908 sorry to say but you are terribly wrong man. This method is known as dumping and has been around almost since the day that the GE came out. I've dumped several items with different groups and it works quite well. My first dump was a piece of barrows amour (whatever the skirt is), I only invested about 2m and made around 4-5m profit.
And why don't you guys just dead over to M.O.D ? Were in the middle of a dump and its not too late to join in on this dump. If we do start a dumping group here though, I'd be more than happy to join, I have about 18m+ and rising everyday.

Trying to buy out a relatively rare item, with a relatively large amount of people with relatively low amounts of money (what MOD is doing) ends up screwing most of the people. I think using an item that is more in demand (meaning buying and selling will be easier), and just buying enough to effect the price (rather than try to buy it out) would be better.
Another thing: a merchanting group based soley or mostly on SRL members would have a big advantage. We can use our armies to to buy the stuff we are selling. Or we could write scripts to produce an item to play with.

Main account: buy item A for 900 each at a 900 base price (cheapest)
Main account: sell item A for 1000 each at a 900 base price
repeat
Bot accounts: buy item A for 1000 each
Bot accounts: sell purchased item As for 1000 each
until (whateveR)
Idk Boreas… that might work or won't work at all… using the bots to buy the supplies may only work once and thats only a small gain… but still is one… I'm not sure about what you would do with those supplies once you have them on your army besides like sell them to general store and use that money to buy more supplies at the 1000 each example mark.
The ultimate goal is to buy something for cheap before all this and then raise the price as much as possible (from the initial over buying on your main at the low price) and then using your bots to buy the item at the new desired hirer price level as an extra boost and then after the price is jacked up sell your bulk of items you had on your main for the new inflated value :)
So feasibly:
Spent a butt load of money on your main on something that isn't extremely rare or common but a good balance of that where you can effectively influence the price. once you find that item:
Spend millions on it on your main
Save it for later
Get on your bots
buy the item at the maximum rates
take the item you recieved and exchange it for cash at the general store
buy the item at the maximum rate and repeat
once the item has a huge inflated value sell your bulk of that item on your main
Edit: Dam or do you wait until after you try and sell the bulk (pending) to try and buy with your bots?
not a bad plan (of course you're going to need a dozen or more people all do the same thing) and there is still the question of which item to use…

Such as Clayfter? Although, if this idea is used, they should have a couple separate scripts so one item doesn't go all the way down. But a whole town just sounds like MSI, which never has gone through completely. So I guess they could just get some people to work together to find a couple different money making methods (mostly F2P), if it goes this way I have a couple idea's I could contribute.
I can invest > 10m, if the official plan sounds good, and if I don't go on a spending spree.
Though, this sounds like it will basically only work for P2P. So could you set up a person with 'mule' accounts which will have P2P always (could donate pins so it's not all on one person), and will transfer autoer(s) cash to that account (of course, you'd have to set up a log of who gave how much, then find a correct 'splitting' method so everyone gets the correct profit for what they gave) and then transfer back to the supporting accounts, or too their main. There would be 3 different accounts, a higher(but not too high so it doesn't go over the limit for the crater eventually) level for the crater it's located in, so it has a better chance of survival. Of course this way would only be for people without the ability to buy member pins. I'm not sure how well this would work, unless you have a team of qualified transferrers, and it'd be kind of difficult to keep track of all this. It's just an idea, you could come up with a better way yourselves probably. :(

Well from what I've heard MOD made a big loss just because 1 GUY !!! felt like being a noob and sell too early.
We need TOTAL trust between each other if this happens.
What happened with MOD shows that you apparently can't trust ALL members of MOD.
This can result in either :
-Big loss for everyone
-Not too much matter
-Group being split for the above reasons.
We need a group with absolute trust, without trust we're just good to go throw our money in the toilets :(.
EDIT : What Items could work in F2P (in bulks) are :
-R2h's
-Rune Platebodies
-Corrupt stuff [not sure]
Basically anything thats over 25K should work, especially if its high in demand.
R2Hs are high in demand, its the strongest wep in F2P and alot of F2P buys them
Rune Plates are the best plate armour for F2P's thus making it high in demand
I'm not sure for corrupt stuff… They're so overpriced for only a short time of wearing them…

Jason's strategy seems the most fair. Grab a forum very very top secret, get a secret IRC channel and one-to-one, interview people in. Wizzup + other admins, and maybe devs interested, could make sure your letting in the right people.

Oh, I already set up the IRC channel. It has a key, so you won't be able to join, but we have one.
As someone already said, reputation points don't count for much. It will probably be interview style. Also, we don't need to start recording history right now – there is a place that does it for us.
