Sandstorm - SRL Member Application Form
Sandstorm

What is the meaning to life?

To be the best you can be, and hopefully fulfill your dreams.

Where you Referred to SRL? If yes, by whom?

No

Programming Knowledge

No other languages but SCAR. Contemplating learning Delphi though.

Other Communitys

M.O.D., My Clans forum, HoloHYDRA

How Long have You Played Runescape?

6~ years.

Are you affilated in anyway with Jagex LTD?

No

Please write down a paragraph about Yourself.

I'm hesitant to post this, because I know some people still don't like me all that much (with good reason as well), but Camo Kyle has backed me up in my decision to post this, and I trust his judgement, as he is a good friend.

I realize that I've made some bad choices in the past, and because of those choices, I know I probably won't get anywhere near the same welcome as I would have if I chose to do things differently. Despite this, I hope you guys will at least listen before passing judgment on me.

I know I used to be an immature little shit (sorry if the language isn't allowed), as well as getting pissed off at just about everything bad people said about me. Because of this, I've been trying ever since I realized this to turn it around, and I think I've been doing pretty well. I still do mess around and throw barbed comments at people, and I do get exasperated sometimes, but I haven't done anything like this in a while.

Anyways, enough of the soppy stuff. Time to do what this area asks for. I've been scripting for around a year and a half, with a 6-8 month break. Despite that, I believe I have improved a lot in this time, and I do thoroughly enjoy scripting when I'm up to it. I like to think I'm decently advanced in scar, but that could just be my ego talking.

Sorry for the five paragraph essay, but I had a bunch of stuff I wanted to say. If you read this far, thank you for taking the time to read it.

~Sandstorm

P.S. - There's no box to answer the meaning of life question :P.

Please Post a Sample of your Work. Only SCAR Scripts Accepted.

Camo Kyle for doing just about everything that we could think
of to help. He's spent much of his free time in the past few weeks
helping me, and I don't think I could have made this script function as
well as it does without him helping me and commenting on what I could do
to make it better.
N1ke! for his UseSpecial function.
Narcle for his SpecialPercent function.
Thanks to Floor66 for his UpdateScript function; I edited it a bit.}

Apart from the wince I get from the global vars, YES!

Wizzup?

2008-12-08 06:42:39

I do think the global variables are a bad practice, especially the x and y ones.
You could have also shortened the DualScreen1,2 and Accept1,2.

DualScreen(First: Boolean): Boolean;
AcceptDualScreen(First: Boolean): Boolean;

Did you test the script with multiple players?
I find this line really weird:
  If Not Loggedin Then
LoginPlayer;

Shouldn't you just do that when you check if you are going to change players?

noidea

2008-12-08 07:00:43

THere are a ton of times where you use findcolortolerance. Using (If GetColor()=;) is a whole lot better :)

Sandstorm

2008-12-08 08:19:05

@EvilChicken - Wow! Thanks!

@Wizzup - I don't have multiple players I can test it on, so I haven't yet. I put that at the start so you can start it logged out, but I guess it isn't needed. I didn't think of that. Thanks, I'll take a look into implementing it.

@Noidea - I used FindColorTolerance in my Changes and ArmorOff procedures, to use examples, because I needed to find the color in an area (there's more then one place it can change).

boberman

2008-12-08 09:20:46

Yep, Get rid of the global variables (as wizzup said) but for the most part everything looks really good.

You do have sections where you load and free dtms pretty quickly. It might be advantageous to load the DTM, use it to the duration of the script, and then free it at the end of the script.

Sorry no from me too.

I supported in giving you another chance at the forums. Since it has been over a year but SRL Membership again after a month of letting you back is too soon, imo.

That would just show people that you can do a bad deed. Come back and apologize a good amount of time later and apply and be back to where you were.

I do believe you have changed and no question about the script. Just no right now.

Why? Because you shouldn't even be here as a junior member in my opinion. You committed an offense that results in a permanent ban and I feel it should be upheld as it is set in the rules. I think it is gracious of us enough to even let you come back. But members, you will never deserve that.

Im pretty sure he stole a couple accounts and stuff off them from JuKKa (I think not positive). This was almost a year ago, and i dont hold it against him.

I'm going to refrain from voting, I wasn't realy around when this happened so i have mixed feelings on the issue.

I used mousebox because that's where the box is, and a normal player doesn't click in around the same area any time. If it makes you feel better, I added in a misclick option to the new version ^.^.

@Esteban - I figured it was probably going to be something along those lines; thanks for confirming it.

Edit:

@Blumble - I don't want to get into this argument, so I'll keep it brief. While I admit I had access to JuKKa's account, I was not aware that he did not have access to them. As a result, I didn't send him any messages after I was banned.

Before I say anything else, I don't want to come across as annoyed or mad because you changed your vote. I respect your decision to change your vote, it's this that irks me:

once a scammer/pixel stealer, always.

Personally, and unfortunately, that's what I've come to expect. That's also what frustrates me. Why do people believe nobody can learn from their mistakes?

For example:

We have jails. Why? So we can put people there to learn a lesson. Punishment will generally help people learn a lesson; or at least learn not to do it again because of the consequences. Why not just kill them? They'll never learn anything valuable in jail, will they? They're just wasting money, aren't they?

To be honest, the way people act like that saddens me. It shows how unforgiving society has become.

IDK. On the one hand, he got caught in a lie, and ultimately he didn't admit to it until a year later (see his 359 days post). He stole items from a members application the left its username and password in. That's dishonorable and low.

However, it isn't the lowest thing he could have done. For example, he could have made a password stealing script or some malicious script that does something more then what he did.

Most likely he won't get in because of the last permanent ban (not so permanent), I might say that's a bit harsh. People should be allowed second chances (but no more).

Yes it has been. Maybe those people didn't request their vote changed?
I don't see how this is unfairly voted. People have a right to change their opinion. I think its pretty fair letting this vote continue, do you not? If i wanted to make it unfair, why not just end to poll and ban him. It would be much less hassle than this, but have I done that? No. Why? Because that would be unfair.

By stealing the password from an application you made every SRL member seem untrustworthy because we were the only ones who could steal it.

and SRL works pretty much on a trust basis. you will trust more an admin who tells you something about what's going on in SRL than you'll trust a JM. you'll trust a Dev more about ur script than a member.

by being untrustable you're messing the whole community up. SRL members are supposed to be honourable and trustworthy in this community.

if it was me applying and my password got stolen i would seriously wonder if i would want to join a community where the higher ranks are robbing the smaller ranks.

Actually (from what I remember) he's allowed to vote, but the stickies say something like "Fellow Members won't respect you for it".

As for the issue at hand, I believe in second chances. Just because he made one, single bad decision over a year ago doesn't mean he can't change. I bet he highly regrets the choice he made, and probably would have taken it back the day after he did it. Pretend that he never took the account, what do you have against him? From what I remember (I had only been around a couple months before it occurred), Hey seemed to be a well-respected member of the community. But as soon as he made that one bad choice…

Compare this to a real life situation. Pixels = money. Lets say he stole a wallet, but was then suspected by authorities. When questioned, he denies it a couple times, but then they go and put him in jail anyway because they have conclusive evidence. Now, he wouldn't get more than a month or two (for stealing a wallet, AKA a bunch of money, and lying to the jury), much less a year (unless my little knowledge of law underestimates how bad lying about stealing a wallet is), right? I think a year is plenty of time, but, obviously, some of you guys think it isn't enough, and others think it will never be enough.

I never said anything about you not changing or regretting what you did. That does not change the fact that you committed a permanently bannable offense.

Say I was in the states somewhere, and I did something like brutally murdered someone and got Capital Punishment(Death sentence). They never do it right away, you still get time to sit there in jail and think. Well maybe on that night i did the offense I had some issues bothering me and this innocent person just happen to be walking by when i felt i needed to let my rage out. Well later I could think, "Wow, why did i do that, he never did anything to me. That was a huge mistake." And i may truly regret it. That doesn't change the fact that I am soon about to die.

Sometimes no matter how much you regret something or have changed your ways, you still have to take the punishment.

Murder != Theft :\

If someone were to steal something, he'd get put in jail for a couple months (depending on how large the theft was) and then be released, free to live his life as he pleases.

You both missed the point completely. I was not comparing his actions to murder. I was saying, sometimes not matter how much you regret what you did and feel remorse, you still have to pay the punishment.

Now on a forum, in our little world, using the trust you are given as an SRL Member and take peoples passwords, then later lie about it, that's the murder in our world. It was a permanently bannable offense and other have been banned for the very same thing and not been let back in. So my question is:

Why should we have a double standard for you? You did what you did, and now you have to pay the consequences of your actions.

I guess it's just a difference of opinion. I believe that the murderer who really regrets his mistake and wouldn't do it again should be freed. After all, the only thing he'd be is an asset to society. But, of course, that would never happen in the real world because you wouldn't know if he is telling the truth or not. You might also say that if he could get away with it, anybody would think "Oh, if I murder someone, I can just say I'm sorry and won't do it again and I'll be free", but I'm assuming (in this case) that what the murderer feels inside himself is the truth. If one murdered with the thought that he'd get out of it anyway, that means he doesn't really regret what he did.

I don't know if anyone will be able to understand what I just said, it's hard to explain… In short, I believe Hey/Sandstorm in that he really regrets it and wouldn't do a thing like it again.

Has something like this ever happened before? Unless it stayed within the admins, I don't recall anybody coming back after a long ban only to be banned again. I think yanix came back (don't remember what his new name was and whether he was banned again or not), and he got the status back which he had before he was banned (Jr. Member). Yeah, his case is a bit different, I'm just saying that I don't recall anyone that wanted to come back turned away.

EDIT: Below, Dan Cardin pointed out the cases of Hy and Sp0rky (who were given a second chance, which I agree with). So I think he should be allowed a fair chance at Members, but I respect everyone's opinions and I guess Sandstrom will probably have to wait a bit longer.

i believe that becoming junior member is a huge step, and you really need to prove yourself to this community showing that you can be a member of this community that will provide a positive influence to everyone here

i am also aware that you regret what you did in the past and have shown remorse but it all comes down to the fact that it is too soon and if u end up becoming a member, it probably would not be any time in the near future

sorry if this seemed harsh but its just how i see it

[S]paz

2008-12-12 08:36:49

Its all too quick. The way i see it, is that you do genuinely feel bad, but the fact that you were allowed back is, in it's self a big step. To suddenly apply again is taking advantage of he fact you were allowed in. Regardless of your talents. I see that yes, you can script and you aren't half bad, but your timing is awful.
Take the time you have been given to get to know the rest of the community and earn their trust the hard way, by helping others with your knowledge, TALKING to people and proving without saying, that you have changed and do feel sorry.

IMHO its all too sudden. To be given a second chance and wanting to have members just like that. I've always thought that to get into members you needed 2 things:

1. Talents [X]
2. Good attitude [X]
3. Respectability and trust [X]

I feel you should build up the trust / respectability first before wanting to get in.
Just think about peoples feelings and timings before wanting a second chance.

Very slight connection but i cant think of a better one atm.

You cheated on your girlfriend, After a year of her saying dont ever talk to me again ect, you try to become friends with her saying your sorry ect. Its like within a week of coming back saying your sorry you ask her out again. its all a bit sudden.

Say you work at some random airport as one of those security people who go through bags and suitcases that look suspicious in the x-ray scanner. You get caught for stealing money out of wallets and/or purses. Now, you may be able to work at the airport again, but probably as nothing better than a janitor. You certainly won't be in the same position to go through people's belongings like that again.

WOw, it's been a while since I've posted. But I have been checking up from time to time. My advice is clean up the script. From a cursory look it looked ok/good, but you have poor standards and unnecessary "case" functions.

Especially with the one with "true/false" case function? What's up with that? Idk, I find a simple "if/then" statement to be sufficient.

Better luck next time, buddy. If you need help feel free to ask me anything. I haven't posted for a while, but I know what I'm talking about :D

How is it fair?

He was allowed back!

So, people are allowed to deny him a second chance, even though the admins gave him one?

Acturally members can vote what they like, it is fair, also 2 admins have posted on this thread saying no, it may be a bit unfair but not much, i bet is he try's again in 1-2 months most the votes will be on the script on and not his past.

He wasn't allowed back. He was perm banned for stealing accounts, and came back under a false name. Technically that's not being "given" a second chance. It's demanding one.

Also, it's true that we've all done something wrong. But please, show a little dignity, and don't liken our wrongdoings to his. They're on a completely different scale.

If you don't ask for something, you'll seldom have it handed to you. It's not as if an admin would have found out his msn and said 'Hey, we'd let you back into SRL now, want to come back?'. And judging from his '359 days ago' thread, the admins already knew about him coming back before that, so I'm guessing he made the account, sent a PM to an admin or something making sure it was OK, then now we're here. Of course, I could be all wrong, but from what I've seen that's what seems the most likely.

I wasn't here when he stole the account but I have read the thread and his post on his 359 days. If he wasn't allowed a second chance then the admins would of banned him again a long time ago. Why make a big deal over it now because he just recently applied for members? He has been here awhile before and he has been very helpful. Why can't you all see that he HAS changed? Like people have said, he has been given a second chance and he has taken it the best he can.

Oh well, I'll roll with it. This thread is almost closed anyways. I'll just have to make sure to get the last word in.

Just because people can change, doesn't mean we should forgive their past. This person sole another person's goods. That's wrong, and should be unforgivable.

It's unknown to me why the admins allowed him to come back under a different name, but that's their decision. We should still, by no means, allow him into SRL members. (It's not like he's getting there anyways. Five point lead on the No side!)

How do you know he didn't talk to somebody before he re-registered? I haven't seen anything about how exactly the admins let him back. Even if he did register before talking to an admin, how else could he contact an admin (unless he had one's msn, which, like a couple other things on this subject, we don't know) other than through SRL? You're saying the admins were intimidated by him?

It's simple: If he had contacted one of the admins before re-registering, he wouldn't have waited 359 days before making a thread. This would imply that an admin is keeping the conversation he had with Sandstorm a secret, which doesn't seem like something an admin would/should do.

Also, given that there's no evidence that any of this actually happened, I'd say you're pulling that completely arbitrary scenario out of your arse.

My bad, I didn't check to see his registration date, which happens to be back in May. OK, so he registered before asking an admin. I still highly doubt that the admins had no idea he'd been registered for a couple months, and then when he tells them that he's Hey they let him back. As for why he waited so long to tell the public about coming back, I wouldn't either, if it hadn't been even close to a year since I stole an account.

So basically you're saying is that even when somebody changes we should remember what has happened in the past? Using your statement, explain this for me then. A 18-19 year old gets into a lot of trouble and has multiple charges on his record. Some of them are grand theft, assault, and breaking and entering. He gets sentenced to 2 years in jail. He gets out a year and 4 months later because of good behavior. He has truly changed for the better. His record gets cleared. Should we still harp on his past and not forgive/trust him?

No, I honestly didn't see the nonsense in my argument. If an admin was contemplating letting a member who was permanently banned come back, why would he not simply unban the banned account? My argument made perfect sense. Sandstorm talked to no admin about returning under the radar, prior to returning. If he did, he was not given the OK. I'm not sure where TViYH got that idea from.

See it now? The last two examples you gave can actually be slid right together. It makes more sense that way, otherwise you're cutting off part of the context.

The first one doesn't even count. I was trying to prove a point, using logic. Saying that it makes no logical sense to not simply unban the banned account, than to force the person who was banned to return under another name.
