This is something that has really always bothered me (well, since I was old enough to notice). In Canada & the US (don't know about Europe), there is this whole system of "political correctness".
It's just that, Christmas can never be called Christmas. It is somehow a "holiday season" that just happens to fall on the same day that the Christian world celebrates Christmas. It just seems ridiculous to me. If stores and organizations are so afraid of offending people by openly 'celebrating' Christmas, then they can just let the holiday pass quietly. But no, they have to capitalize on sales, so they have this strange duplicity where they acknowledge the cultural pervasiveness of Christmas by assuming that everyone will buy things, while at the same time denying it by insisting that it is just the "holiday season".
It's not just Christmas though. Similarily, AD (anno domini) is called CE (common era), even though:
a) It's based on the exact same year
b) There is no alternate justification for picking that year
c) It's not even a "common" era - most Muslim countries use AH (`Âm al-Fîl, the Year of the Elephant / the year Muhammad was born).
And a plethora of other things fall victim to being "correct".
Now I'm not saying that "Jesusjesusjesuschristmaschristmas" should be shoved down everyone's throat, but if people are going to celebrate Christmas, why can't they just call it Christmas?
EDIT:
P.S. This post is probably really poorly written, I will revise it later when my dog is not bothering me :o
