Problems with Keygens

Legal issues aside, there are two major issues in using keygens: Product activation and online key verification.

Keys generated with a key generator may not work with software that is used online, including downloading software updates. This is because the user must confirm their serial number every time the software connects to the server, and the key may be invalid for various reasons.

One reason is that the cracker may have misinterpreted the original algorithm, creating a key that was "good enough" to let the software be installed, but not letting all possible future generated keys be valid.

Another reason may be that the software developers only accept keys that they know were distributed with the media during production, or had been issued with an online registration, causing a cryptographically correct key to still be denied.

A third reason could be a secondary unpublished algorithm that is used by the vendor, e.g., to extend the previous example, the characters 0, 7, 9, C, and K are never allowed. The software that confirms the key on the user's machine does not know these numbers and characters are not allowed, and will accept the keygen output, but the online confirmation fails.

Keys for massively multiplayer online games are different; usually each key is uniquely generated by the producer and included with the product, usually in a tamper-proof medium such as a scratch card or tamper-proof envelope. These keys will usually become uniquely linked to a certain game account upon usage and are rendered "useless" by this process. Therefore, MMOGs are not usually subject to piracy.

Keygens may also contain viruses (depending on whom they are downloaded from). When the program is opened, instead of providing a valid key, the program may install harmful software on the computer on which it was installed.

Meh, Virus scanners are all but useless IMO. At one time in their history they could keep up with the creation of new viruses, but no more. I could count on one hand the number of times a virus scanner has prevented me from getting a virus.

If you don't want a virus, don't run random programs you find off the Internet.

Yeah,KeyGen can have very much viruses. I have one without viruses, but most of them have viruses! I had 3 KeyGen with viruses I deleted them so quick I could:)

Solution: Buy Software.
Realistic Solution: Get yourself into a private torrent site.

When i'm in need of a serial, and cant be bothered with shedding out a few hundread $$$, I merly head on over to a um well known serial website which requires you to download nothing, and has thousands of serials on :-).
Can argue that sites will never be as good as Keygens, but some times you just don't wanna risk ya system!

wait a minute..

Just get on an invite-only site that uploads only scene releases(not like Demonoid, they are basically public), and you will have 0 virus's… For example, here's a list of a bunch of files that were released & none of them include a virus:

ontopic, it just really depends what site u go to, if u go to a dodgy site to get serials u will get a virus its how it is

This thread is retarded. "KeyGen is a virus!" .. You're talking like as if there is only 1 keygen out there and everyone knows there can be crap on them. To be honest anything you download can have stuff added to it that you don't know about.

The people that make patchers/keygens and whatnot are often most likely capable of making trojans, viruses etc. too, and as they don't really get any profit from making them (except respect from other people on the same "business"), so I sort of see the point in backdooring 'em..

Another option is that the keygen/crack/patcher or whatever you have has been re-uploaded by someone else that's added something nasty in it, rather than the original author.

Be smart and always scan executable files on virustotal, novirusthanks, jotti or something else alike, but don't rely 100% on them too as people have (private/"commercial") packers, crypters etc. to make the viruses UD.

Erm… downloadcrackserial is the best place to downlod the best keygens from.
Just because you got a virus from your little mistakes doen't meen you have to post they all have viruses.
