How can I kill some plants?

Brain

2008-10-20 23:26:50

Alright, I need to assassinate my roommate's plants…

They sit on the window-sil and I can't close or open the window, and he won't move them, so I want to stealthily KILL THEM!!!

Here's the problem, I'm living in the dorms again, and I don't have many chemicals around… Anyone know anything readily available to slip in the water?

I want them to die hard-core!

And of course, some rep+ for cool/crazy/good ideas, that actually work to kill these stupid plants, without him knowing I did it.

edit:

BIG UPDATE!!!!

He brought ANOTHER plant in….
So now he freaking has THREE (3) of them!!!!

And the ones I have been salt watering for the last week are still going strong…

I think I need some more drastic methods, I might try to swipe some chemicals from the janitor….

Thanks everyone for all your support thus far.

over water them? better yet, put ALOT of fertilizer in em, that'll make em shrivel up n die. or alternativy you could light them on fire, or they could "accidentally be pushed off the window-sil" haha, only things i can think of :)

Brain

2008-10-21 00:04:07

Those are all fine and dandy, but I want chemicals! :D
and he doesn't have fertilizer.
and over watering would take time, and I doubt the soil has the capacity to hold enough water long enough to drown the roots, and it would spill out the bottom all over the floor :p

Over watering seems like the most ninja. Lighting on fire is the most pirate.

Super salty water is also pretty ninja.

Brain

hmmmm, salty water, that is readily available…but I think it might make some salt deposits on the top of the soil?

I'll start salt watering them tomorrow :)

Brain

Also, I was thinking maybe really hot water? But I think I would have to poor it on the leaves themselves, and that would make a mess. As for in the soil, I think it would probably dissipate the heat before it did any real damage to the roots.

EDIT:
lol…pee on it? It's on the window sil, next to a very busy sidewalk :s I would get some funny looks :O

try bleach haha. or a mixture of bleach and salt. something crazy like that. or vinegar! idk. go crazy

Iron Man

2008-10-21 02:00:48

If chosen to pee on it, take advantage of the busy sidewalk and make a sign and hold it up against the window "Hey babe, want some of this?".

As for ways to kill it other than salt water and urine:
1. You could also take another advantage of it being in front of a window, and open the window sill, and "slip onto it it", causing it to break. (After re-reading it I see you cannot open the window sill; find a way ;) .)

2. Replace it with a plastic plant, and claim that you didn't want to hurt is feelings then have a fake (real is allowed too) mental breakdown and start crying, then say you love him, that will take his mind off the plant.

That's all I can think of for now.

Brain

Yeah, weed killer, bleach, ammonia, drain cleaner, vinegar all sound pretty good, but like I said, limited supplies here. BUT, we do have soap…and salt…I think I'll try some soapy salt, though I don't know how toxic soap is to plants…or salt. And as for the the people say physically damage it, that isn't really an option, because I want him to think he failed at plants, so he stops trying, and I don't have to kill more of them later… :p

Hot oil huh?

I don't have oil in my dorm, nor a good way to heat it? Maybe the microwave…but again, no oil. And Markus, I know it will cause plasmolysis since it would exposed to a hypertonic solution, but I'm not sure if the solution will stay the roots long enough to cause enough dessication. Anyway, that's what I'm going with, soapy salty water. I will start when he goes to physics lab tonight, and after I grab some salt packets from the cafeteria.

In addition to soap and salt, why not try to alter temperature of the room? Some plants cannot grow or just die when the temperature does not suit their proper environment. I say to to put the temperature super cold when you are away:D

No chemicals makes it tough because that is the easiest and least detectable way to kill plants.

But if you want to be ninja with what you have…

Spray-paint the leaves whatever color they are so they get no light (little messy inside) but you could take it outside when your roomy isn't home.

Grab some of those do not eat packets from clothing that are supposed to absorb moisture and put them in the soil to dehydrate them.

Salt works good but so does blood but blood is really hard to come by unless you're a murderer or suicidal.

If you make an incision with a knife at the very base of the plant it will kill it within a few days. Grab a razor and make a cut below the soil line all the way around the stem. Make sure you completly sever the xylem (or is it phloem) either way this stops the plant from being able to get any water and it will die.
It would be hard to detect if you used a small knife (unless he really examined the plant) and if it was below the soil line (dig down a little) they would never notice.

You could also put it in the freezer for a couple of hours a day/bury some ice cubes in its pot and freeze it to death.

Good luck and i hope this was helpful

Some other ideas…maybe not as effective as the others but if the others don't work…

Don't know on this one but supposedly plants respond to their environment which includes sound. The good gardeners talk nicely to their plants and sing to them. Why not trying to cuss at the plant every time you remember?

Find a way to make green light fall on the plant. Supposedly the chlorophyll can't function properly under green light. This could only be done if you had a few hours of the day to devote to it. If not it could still deprive the plant of a little nourishment which might weaken it to other forms of sabotage.

…(if you smoke) Plants die when exposed to too much cig smoke. You could just smoke by the window and blow the smoke through the plant.

like the spray paint you could coat the leaves with something. Vaseline would make cellular resperation impossible and cause the plant to die.

Find some bugs (from outside hopefully) and put them in the pot, if you are lucky they will find the plant delicious and they will devour it.

Risky one… Take the plant out of the pot and put the roots in a plastic bag then put it back in the soil. This will keep the water from getting to the roots and it will die of dehydration. The only problem would be if he pulled up the plant to throw it away and the roots had a bag on them.

Now some last resort type ideas…

Break the window and make it have to be boarded up so the plant gets no life.

Actually talk to the roommate and ask them to move the plant.

Hide drugs in it and call the cops on your roommate and then they will confenscate the plant as evidence.

Mhm, plants/the chlorophyll absorbs all colors EXCEPT green, that's why they look green since they reflect it. so if you took it away from the white light (light from sun being on the windowsill), and then got a green bulb right over top of it you could slowly decrease it's growth/eventually kill it… IDK how long it actually takes tho.

Get soil with no magnesium in it. Without magnesium, plant will slowly die due to being unable to produce chlorophyll. That will slowly turn it yellow and he will think to water more and by doing so will remove the little nutrients left in and thus lead to its demise. This way is much more ownage because it will be a slow, painful death for the plant and can be easily redone again and again without him noticing (by offering to pot his new plants when he gets them - not only does he think you're being nice, you can secretly make sure it dies!).

ANY chemical will kill plants:
Any soluble chemical, even including the various commercial fertilizers, if used in sufficient amount, will kill plants.

One of the most effective ways would be to add huge volumes of salt to the soil. Make sure its all churned in. This will soak up all the water, and will make it appear like they have simply died of thirst, meaning your room-mate wont be suspicious.

If you happen to have a kerosene lamp lying around, use some of that and the plant will die within 2 hours. Else, just pour a little bit of petrol in some water, then water the plant. You could use caustic soda, but its not that effective (Better at killing ivy).

Well I thought he watered them everyday, it turns out you only water them once a week. So he started to ask if I was watering them, since they were still soaked days after he watered them last…since I had salt watered them 3 days straight… I made the excuse that it just got colder here and cold air has a lower saturation point than warm air, so I said it was probably because it evaporates slower. I think he bought it…

So I have to turn down the salt watering, but I have been doing it consistently, with just smaller doses of salt water, just a little more concentrated.

I have put so much salt in them, that there are salt rings along the bottom, where the saline solution has evaporated and leaving salt deposits on the reservoir…..

3) How to kill plants with organic sprays. You can use an organic spray such as industrial strength vinegar (acetic acid). This burns off the tops of plants such as dandelions. But it kills anything it touches so do not spray it on good plants. If you spray it on lawn weeds, it will burn off the nearby grass as well.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Will_detergent_kill_plants

If you google detergent plants, a gazillion hits are returned on the subject of the effects of detergents on plants. Numerous experiments have shown that detergents kill plants of all types.

surely detergent will kill the plants.. the reason being is detergents have the foaming agent such as sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) or sodium lauryl sulphate which can cleave the protein molecules present in the cells converting them into peptides by breaking the chemical bondings.. how can a plant survive without protein?

2) Plant is watered with detergent solution.

This time the detergent goes straight to the roots. The roots don't
have any waxy cuticle, as their function is to absorb water. They also
have to absorb a number of other things, and make sure that water doesn't
leak out of the plant to the soil. The detergent will dissolve the lipid
membrane that surround the root cells. This will kill these outer cells,
and stop the plant absorbing water and nutrients. The root hair cells
absorb all of the water and nutrients the plant needs, and these will be
the first to be killed by detergent. Without its' supply of water and
nutrients, the plant will die. Have a look here at some root hair cells at
this site:

Detergent ftw?

Caustic Soda?

Hydrochloric Acid?

Sulpheric Acid?

Sodium Hydroxide?

I'm sure you can 'procure' some of those from your chemistry lab. Shouldn't be too hard.

Try taking a picture of the plant, some plants can live very long in high concentrations of salt, and other chemicals.

and a katana will work separately and/or combined

I still say that you cut the stems.

You should post some pics of what the plants look like and the surrounding area so that we can come up with more ideas. Like if it is a certain type of plant there might be an easy way to kill it?

Seriously just throw it in a freezer for an hour and it will get frost bite and die…unless it is a really hardy plant.

I don't remember if this was suggested but try using boiling salt water instead of just cold salt water. This allows you to pack like three times more salt into the water and the heat will really hurt the plants.

Iodine and cornstarch. There isn't a reaction, but the starch holds the iodine so it can be absorbed. Or you can use the type of Drain Cleaner that is mostly sulfuric acid, it will eat away the roots. It also contains an inhibitor to prevent too much heat from being created. You could also use Lye (pretty pure) that you could probably buy… Anywhere? Mix it with water and wash it off your hands, quick :) (Don't spill the Sulfuric Acid Drain Cleaner on you, either)

I will take pics later when he goes to band. So far I have salt watered them (hot tap) and put concentrate laundry detergent in them.

To no visible effects

This may be a lil messy, but be as clean and neat as possible so it's not noticable…

you will need about 3 or 4 of those cheap lighters (the ones you can adjust the flame) - Dollar Store FTW! :p

gently dig your way down to the roots, try and find a few of the bigger ones (small ones may be a lil mor difficult) choose 2 or 3 of them, and give a tiny lil snip (razor will work best) now take your lighters, and for each root you snipped, unscrew the lighter ALL the way (the fluid will shoot out so make sure you aim it at the root) it will not only shoot fluid into the root, but will also freeze it ;) now cover it back up and fix the soil so it looks like it was touch ;)

afterwards, you can also try unscrewing a lighter and dropping it in a cup of water (diluted lighter fluid? :P ) then water the plants with that…

NOTE: make sure you have either an open window or a fan and some car airfresheners jus incase ;) IF there is any smell, it should be gone in 30 mins or so…

Lemme know if it works (h)

Just put some salt under the soil, near the roots…They'll be gonners in a few days. No point with water and salt…..Just salt in the soil, right text the roots and the jobs a gooden, I guarantee it :)

OK time for the best Idea yet. You use ether alchohol I suggest ethanol thatl abosolutely smash them. Next would be vinegar, pour some on the roots, stem and there gonners. Or If you want to have real fun go grab some ingredients.
* Toss dry colorants onto the flames.
* Soak logs in an alcohol solution of colorants.
* Soak logs in an aqueous (water) solution of colorants and allow the logs to dry.
* Prepare pinecones, sawdust, or cork with colorants.

AND watch them burn green. Woopde do the plants are dead your room mates pissed off, tell him to get a life and stop growing queer plants in your dorm.
Problem Solved.!

The "fluid" in lighters is compressed butane. As soon as it leaves the pressurized container it changes to the gaseous phase. So you cannot dilute it with water at 1 ATM, sorry :p And butane is odorless, unless they add a scent to it. Nice suggestion freezing the roots though…..might try it with liquid carbon dioxide…. :)

Hydrochloric acid. HCl. Best easily-available stealth killer. Looks like water, cheap to buy anywhere. Just run over to a hardware store.

This is the easiest way of killing a plant. Take a cap full of rubbing alcohol and poor it down the top of the plant down to the base. The Alcohol with reverse the photosynthesis and paralyze the cells of the plant. It takes about a week for you to see results so A. Super stealth. B. Kills the plant. C. You can not revive the plant it stays drunk till you change the dirt.

Good luck!

Some weedy trees and large shrubs have been cut to the ground, but I do not want to dig and cause soil erosion. I understand that it is best to apply the root killer when the plants are still active, or trying to obsorb nutrients down to the roots. Also, should I use the concentrated weed killer, or use the regular diluted one. I currently use the Round-up Brsh killer, "ready to use". I do not know yet how effective it is.

1 plant does not look good, possibly on its way to dying
1 plant looks healthy still, but its the newer plant, so I have salted it less

Why not just kill the room mate instead XD? Solves your plant problem haha. On a serious note, like basically everyone said, rubbing alcohol should do it. Or you could try that tiki torch lighter fluid stuff, can't think of the name of it ATM lol. Good luck in your killings!

Lol. I've got another idea though. The other day I deep fried some chips that you buy frozen from the supermarket, and because I'm so lazy instead of disposing of the dirty oil properly I just went and tipped it out on the back lawn lol. Now theres a big dead patch of grass on the place where I tipped it, and my parents are angry at me lol. But anyway. Try putting a bit of olive oil over the leaves and stem, the plant will look kinda "shiny" though so its not really stealth. But yeah it works because it stops respiration as the plant cant get any C02 (due to the layer of oil), so the plant just dies. Maybe you could put a really thin layer over it, it would still work but it might not be noticeable.

Brain I like the dry ice idea. It should frostbite the plant epically. Just wondering… is there another window in your dorm (I think is where you said you were staying) Because if there is could you just move the plants…?

Idea take out the soil of the plants and put something under them like a balloon so there is less soil in the pot thus there is less stuff to hold the water for it to absorb… The balloon is so the soil line is the same.

Have you tried the lower stem cut yet? It seems that the salt is a little slow.

You can cut the base of the plant and put in something like belladonna in the cut. that should mess up the plant. You could try buying a portable heater and putting the plants right next to it for an hour a day.
