Apply For Jr. Members
TViYH

Okay.
I've been browsing the forums lately, and.
There have been wayyyy too many people just spamming to get their Jr. Member.
One person posted something along the lines of "wow. nice :)" around 4 times on different threads. Now, come on.
I'm assuming that Jr. Member is automatically given.
I think this is wrong.
Most of them did nothing at all to earn anything?!
I think that Jr. Member should either be given out manually, or there should be an application to get Jr. Member.
In this application, they would have to show a basic knowledge of basic SCAR scripting.
Eg., a short script that could successfully click a tree. Something basic to show that they have a clue what they're doing.
Anybody agree?
Thoughts, comments.

Yea, I hear you. The spamming is getting a bit over the top in some cases. However, having to review that many scripts just seems a little much. I mean there are a LOT of Jr. Members here, and having to evaluate each of their scripts? That's a lot of work. Not to mention most could probably just copy and paste someone else's script and use it as their base knowledge, seeing as most basic things are similar.
I like the idea, I think it would just be a bit impractical.
I agree with BlackThursday. It wouldn't be practical to go through all of the scripts to give JRM status. But somthing could be done like making higher standards to be one. Maybe they could make the posts have to be over 20 words long instead of like 3. Or to make it practical they could always grab some random guy that complains about the current system and make it his job to go through the applications. Be carefull what you wish for.
It would be very impractical who would judge it? SRL Members? Maybe SRL Junior members but Idk.

Deleted everything off topic.
No to apps. The solution is discouraging spamming.

2008-10-20 15:55:12
It would be way to hard to deturmine every single person here if when they get 10 posts, to go through all their posts, then vote on if we want them to be a jr. member. Seems a bit impractical. And besides that point, i dont think people would care enough to actually vote.
TViYH
2008-10-20 15:57:52
But dam. Why should people have to get 10 posts? Why not 50?
10 posts can be quickly achieved with spamtastic posts.
Blumblebee
2008-10-20 15:59:46
50 is ALOT of posts for someone who doesnt care about scripting/doesnt know. Al 50 would do is increase the nuumber of spam people made in an attempt to become a jr. member.

2008-10-20 15:59:48
Dude think of all of the people that would apply!
How would you even judge that?! Stupid idea IMO
TViYH
2008-10-20 16:11:32
But you would have a lot of people who actually have an idea of what their doing, instead of spammers who will leech your script, not post a proggy, and then never come back.

This has been brought up before. The cons are to many to the pros. Leechers quite frankly keep this place alive. They are also the ones that use the scripts the most. The 10 posts count isn't as important as the 1 week wait for Junior member.
zertunami
2008-10-20 16:23:32
Would increasing time needed to be a jr member have less cons than post count? I think 1 week is a bit short. Maybe their overall time spent on the forums can be the deciding factor?
TViYH
2008-10-20 16:34:18
Yes, as well as their time ACTIVE on the forums.
And by active I mean being here, posting helpful posts.
There should be a team of Jr. Member sorters xD
Leechers ask the most stupidest questions.
For example.
HOW DO I GET SRL STATS? or HOW I CAN GET SR JR MEMBER?
They don't read stickies… at least we could try to make them post a topic, get them to set up an scar script correctly.
TBH, leechers think the script are 100% safe when they are not, and they macro for like 20+ hours..
Brain
2008-10-20 17:03:08
You want to run though the applications and approve/deny?
That would suck and be boring. And have been a regular member? They don't have access to the Jr. Scripts, and most of the FFA scripts are poorly maintained (no offense to anyone). It is hard to be active until you have the decent scripts to be active with…
And the spammers would just spam more if you raise the postcount req.

Something above about Jr. Members judging the basic scripts. That might not be a terrible idea. We'd just need to find some JRMs that have a clue.
The stuff about leechers is very true. They do generate tons of traffic. However, after a certain point you really do need to start asking for a little more.
TViYH
2008-10-20 17:27:11
I'd be happy if I was nominated as the decider.
It would take, what, 3 minutes per application?
If the people actually wanted the scripts, just take the 3 minutes to fill out/judge the application.
That would dumb down the leechers by handfuls.

I think there should be more requirements for Junior Member, and there should be another group for people between Junior Mem and Member, like a site Regular.

If you can pickup How to click on a tree, then you would easy pickup how to make a full script.. apply for srl Members Xd, TheVoiceInYourHead, you could easyly be a SRL member if you took the time to make a nice script, not very short like your other apps something that walks and banks and does something in the middle
I dissagree with this idea tho.

I agree…. there should be something more than 10 posts… there are so many times that I see people start a thread trying to become a jr mem and all it says is "hello….blah….blah…. " and then they put three posts after it complaining that nobody is talking to them….. seriously … can't there be something more to be completed to become a jr mem…?

I dont think that even infractions make that much of a difference because its like a warning, and then what? those posts don't get taken away (AFAIK) and its not hard to spam 10 posts. I like the idea (kind of, maybe something better could be thought of than using scripting)

No. JR members was made to separate the 2-post count-ers from the 20-post count-ers.
IMO the names are quite a bit off.. JR SRL Member gives too much credit.
Also all < 10 posters should be pruned once a month or so. Would keep our members page pretty and our userdb small.

What I want is for them to show basic knowledge of srl.

As a lot of people have already said, this would be bad. If you raised post count req you would have like 5x more spam. It would also be bad because who would want to waste their time judging like 100 scripts per week. If not more.. Thats all I got to say. ~1337N3SS~

I like the idea of an SRL Regular rank being between Junior Member and Member, then you could do a basic knowledge script maybe for that, there'd be less spam in there and maybe better scripts then junior mems, but not as good as member scripts, just so there's a good spot of working scripts without spam for people who care about srl.

I'd say 10 posts as it is, post count means bugger all imo.. Have a Junior Member application section. Players post there scripts, or whatever weird and wonderful things they've made there, and Junior Members and above can vote Yes or No for their application. 15 votes yes would mean the player is automatically made a Junior Member, 15 votes no, the application is denied, and another application cannot be submitted for another 3 days. Ezpz? :)

yes i am still a new member to these forums. personally i dont think there should even be a 'chicken status'. id say go straight to jr status. just cut out the spamming and cut to the chase. theres always going to be leechers. i used to leech ill admit. now im actually attempting to learn a bit about making my own scripts. im doing alot of learning tho by looking at premade scripts for ideas and templates.

We're talking about going from Registered User to Junior Member.
There won't always be leechers if we make them work for it.

There have always, and will always be leechers.
Almost every one of us started out as a leecher. Hence, this community is depending on those people. Lets compare this to real life; if one of the classes in society were to be removed, the community would collapse. Also, this has been suggesten a lot of times, and rejected every single time as far as I am aware of.
The focus is set on the wrong subject in my honest opinion. Instead if attempting to prevent and discourage leeching, why not try to encourage scripting? Instead of trying to come up with ideas on how to shun away leechers, we should instead come up with ideas of how to get people to start scripting! This would indeed result in more scripts being released, more people drawn to this place, more SRL fixes and improvements and a generally better community.
(FMA, anyone?)

I couldn't resist. Btw issue has been brought up as mentioned. It won't change. I agree with EC we need to encourage people to script rather then test them.

I'm not a big fan of the levels of separation at this forum as it is… and frankly, leechers are an important (although distasteful) part of most any community.
If there were to be an application thing, it would have to have an expanded auto-decliner, plus a team of people to vote. Leaving it open to all JR Members and above would be unwise - you'd get people with 11 posts saying yes because they feel like it.

All it will achieve is to deter people from becoming active. The site has thousands of registered users, with a general filter process of 1 in x becoming active members of the community. By lowering the initial number, you would just lower the overall influx of active members as you would deter some of them.

Though I don't know what comes with the title of being a Junior Member, I assume it isn't much. However, in the same hand, that doesn't mean that spam should be tolerated.
In a game I currently play, the forums are a large part of the game. One thing that the makers have done to drastically reduce spam is to make a modification that essentially analyzes a persons post. To my knowledge, it analyzes the post size, sentence structure, paragraph complexity, and much more. If the post is spam, it goes through but is not counted as a post and a potential demerit is awarded. Now, I'm not saying that SRL needs to go to such lengths. Merely having a word counter would likely stop most of the spam that you speak of ("wow. nice…").
Edit,
Also, if anyone would be so kind. What are the diffrences between a member and junior member? To my current knowledge, you can only become a member via submitting a script. I'm curious - does it have to be a complex script, multiple scripts, or what?

2008-11-06 03:57:10
Once you become juniour members, you'll get a sticky on how to do it.
Gah, another leecher. Even whilst i'm typing this post.
http://www.srl-forums.com/forum/member.php?u=54703Anyway, in summary, you need to know how to script, and script well at that. A good attitude helps too. A script with basic requirements stated in the sticky.
Knowing how to script is the main road to SRL Membership, but a nice attitude and activeness, and hoping a admin would notice has been one of the less travelled roads.
You're surprising for a registered member, less than 10 posts and you actually spell. And well at that.
Good luck.

Good idea but i don't like the voting idea because not many people would vote. (there are better things to do)
I'd suggest that there would be a few (10 maybe?) people who checked applications frequently (like once a week per person). If the candidate shows ANY interest in SCAR-coding, he'd get promoted as a Jr.Member.
I don't there should be any skill-requirements, because its only Junior Member after all. Active interest and involvement are enough.

STOP! Look, the Junior Member rank is just a leecher filter. It's really hard to ban leechers that don't even post, so now they have to post to leech, they want to leech quickly, they spam, we ban. Junior Member rank is not something you'd really have to work for. We are a community offering scripts for free, only wanting feedback.
Unless suddenly without seeing this before, an admin pops in, agrees and just makes SRL private, for now it's 10 posts and a week for Junior Members…
I'd say.

While i think post count is important i think that the time spent on forums should also be taken into consideration,i think it was mentioned above, but if your going to spam your going to do it quickly and spend as little time here as possible so you can you get your script and bounce, but if you stick around and read threads and contribute your showing that you want to learn and that you will stick around regardless of your scripting capabilities at the moment.

having them know how to script is a load of b***** but i agree there should be another requirement put in, there are loads of jr's who contribute but can't script, it just wouldn't be fair, we don't rely on leechers like rsbot but we do to some extent. tbh i think that maybe an app should be going, they provide proof that they have contributed at least 10 posts, no voting just an admin decides, but they'd still have to have been here a week or more.
lol there's a rule for this i think spamming if u do see any1 doing this just report
its should show imagine it 10 first posts all saying "wow. nice :)" its should show
and the click tree thing they need to learn about scripting and was it so easy when u first started…(not asking all the ancient scripter lolz) well im not too keen on it but a few lines could do but then again imagine this some1 making a vid on youtube about how to get in to srl-forums with 10 lines of code… then srl-forums would be noob infested

overall I would like to see more contribution from newcomers, at least try to make a script and do some learning. Leachers are not my most favorable bunch of people just take and not give. Its always going to happen so I think the strategy that's implemented atm is decent to say the least but maybe introduce like trying to make a script or something along those lines. I don't know just something to get people more involved.
There will always be people who spam for post count, welcome to the internet.
My idea would be a spam vote. Beside every post have a spam button and it would take votes, elder members could be worth more votes. After so many votes the post would no longer count towards their post count.
But what do I know.
