Signatures, This isn't a complaint

Found this. If you look at P1nky's profile, he has a large signature that is not all shown on the page when he posts.

http://www.srl-forums.com/forum/member.php?u=5000

Now, I was thinking about the scroll-less signatures. Everyone says they don't load the images. Also it doesn't look like it. But is that confirmed?

Image:

Now I looked at the page source.

P1nky's bottom joker sticker with the frosted glass is linked as http://i37.tinypic.com/288pft3.jpg

A search of p1nky's lesser hassler script page finds the link in the source, defined as an image.

So aren't the images being loaded, just not shown? :S

lol i kept them for backup purpose, so i dont have to reupload and stuff.
good catch :)

i recognized that when i posted a release , waiting for mod to approve tho.

SRL made scroll less signatures because people were getting annoyed. Some people just haven't bothered to change their signatures. But if the images are getting loaded then what's the point. That's not saving on anything. I'd rather cut down on loading time.

i liked that scrolling thingy :)
how about only up to 1-2 pics allowed and rest text :)?

This wasn't meant for an argument on if we should or shouldn't have scrolling signatures, but a question on if it is actually saving bandwidth without them.

oh okay sorry :)
to me looks like it loads everything but hides the scrolling part :o that sounds common sence to me, since the top (purple joker sig) sig is loading so should do the whole sig/pic.

if you try selecting the signature and go past the end but before it starts selecting the quote button. Then copy it and paste it somewhere else you can even get the end of his signature.

So i agree, i dont see how this is helping much on bandwidth

The images still get downloaded, you just don't see them.

Also, those images don't affect SRL's bandwidth, just yours (and TinyPic, etc's)

I thought we got rid of the scrolling because if you use the scroll wheel to scroll a page it'll get stuck on the sig

Hm, well, since one of the main arguments that the scrolling sigs got removed was bandwidth, and now that I have found out that it didn't do anything whatsoever to help bandwidth I am a bit annoyed.

Are we just going to leave them the way they are, or are we going to make a change?

Change!

Maybe scrolling siggy's for SRL Members only?

Then just ignore any images from being load, it is a simple option in firefox.
And Widget, that is indeed what we meant.

I've told Wizzup this on IRC a while ago :p And i told him to bring scrollable signatures back and he said they're gay. Sooo

only prob with scrollers are that when you scroll down the screen with the ball in the mouse(scroller) it will get caught at the sig scrolling , hope you know what i mean takes longer.

it's easily editable, there is css property overflow, values can be visible, hidden, scroll and auto, auto adds scrollbars aswell.. ^^

now it's hidden, all the stuff will still be loaded..

Still bringing up the point, why load what you can't see.

Turning images off in firefox turns all images off, not just the ones not being shown.

I mean I don't have any caps or anything, and with 25meg internet I am far from being slowed down, but some people are.

I say make sigs size limited so we don't have BS loading of stuff we can't even see or use.

Could issues of resolution come into play?

Limited in what way though? By number of images, or size of said images?

One way I can think of is setting a combined size of the signature, then checking that whenever they save their signature, how big each image is, then limiting based on that.
Of course, then they could hotlink to images that they can change after they save the sig, to go around it altogether. :(

Or, (not sure if this is practical) call an executable that can generate an image from rendered HTML (not sure if this exists, if so then good), then truncate that image.

The scrolling thing was super annoying.

Only thing, I wish we had more control on the placement of pictures and text in the signature. But at this point only HTML would allow us that control, and would usher in lots of problems xD.

I agree with the scroll bar being removed. it was extremely annoying.

As previously noted, sigs use other sites bandwidth not SRL forums. That said the more and bigger the sigs the slower each page loads.

There does have to be some limits to the sig and removing the scroll bar will eventually make page loading faster and have a beneficial effect as members will eventually reformat thier sig to fit within the visible area, after all what is the point in having a sig no-one can see, appart from a few unscrupulous folks sticking all kinds of trackers, counter and gawd know what else there.
