If you're speaking about Defense Of The Ancients, you seem to be misunderstood about the game. DOTA is a custom game map for Warcraft III and the expansion pack Warcarft III: The Frozen Throne. To play you must purchase Warcraft III at the least, I recommend also purchasing The Frozen Throne if you want to play the newest DOTA maps. You do not have to pay to use the Battle.Net online play to play the online custom games for Warcraft III.

Since those guys wont tell I can, its simple
1 : in War3 also known as Wc3 or RoC [Reign of Chaos] there are alot of DotA's but most played/famous one is Dota 3.7, since it is mostly bug free and alot of stuff and its fun.
2 : There are DotA Allstars wich is made with Wc3 : TFT [The Frozen Throne] and it needs RoC and TFT to play, there are alot of these maps and even maps with AI to train on and they work without internet! official site for dota : www.getdota.com
3 : Dota 3.7 is best in my opinion but once you played Dota Allstars you will be stuck, the best thing with allstars : there are so many items that no one will be quizing.

I think he is just talking about Warcraft III. You only have to pay for the game once. No monthly payments.
