Getting rid of "bad habits"

GoF

2008-09-14 07:50:02

Hmm. I decided to post here as this is sort of "news" in my life at the moment (and also I'm a bit bored) so here goes..

I've decided to quit smoking, and cut down on my "usage of alcoholic beverages" due to a few reasons:

1. I spend fuckloads of money to that crap.

2. I'm and idiot when I'm drunk and I always have to end up hearing about it the next day, week, forever, mainly "ha ha youre an idiot, remember what you did that one time?" and it pisses me off, so I'm sort of planning to not get totally wasted every time I decide to have a few beers and actually stick to the few instead of "Drink as much as you can as fast as you can and return home dirty and suffer the next day" (last sunday is still clearly on my mind, laid in my bed with lights off for pretty much the whole day after waking up at 3:40 pm or so.

Another reason for quitting smoking is that a few of my friends are planning to quit too, my parents are quitting, so I decided that I really don't wish to continue spending money on it and ruining my health, of course there's no actually "visible" effects etc. from it yet, but that's just another good reason to quit while it still hasn't done any serious damage to my lungs etc. but in 10-20 or so years I'll know and regret not quitting when I was younger, as it should still be easier for me to quit. On the other hand my school has a policy of supporting people that are planning to quit smoking, so I can get free nicotine gum and stuff for a few days every few days as they want to monitor my progress so I won't just sell the stuff to get cash for cigs etc. :p

Anyhow, I've tried before and failed, but this time I'm more cereal about it.

I don't think there are too many smokers here on SRL, atleast ones that have quit, but if you have any kind of "tips" on quitting then go ahead and share them. My friend is sort of addicted to bubble gum (not the nicotine filled crap) as he started chewing it when he quit and felt like smoking to sort of replace the need to smoke with some other stuff :p I guess it helped him and might work for me too, as it's a big time habit to always start rolling a cig the minute I step outside from my house and smoking it :D So if I could get rid of that it'd be an easy ride.

I've also cut down on the amount of time I spend at the pc quite alot and I even shut it down when I leave due to complaints about electricity bills from my parents (pfft) and won't just leave it running :p

So yeah. (waiting for Hugo to post "You will fail" and other peoples "/care" etc.) Wish me good/bad luck.

haha, no, I think you'll make it.
Then again, if you have trouble to like stop thinking about it you could try buying these stickers or w.e that you stick on your arm to help you stop thinking about it and do something you like. (I would run to keep my mind of it but do something that works for you)

also, Claw is correct but that stuff is even more expensive -,-

Haven't started/given up smoking myself, but my mum did and she always told me that the most important thing was not to think about them. She filled the gap mainly with puzzles and a couple of small part-time jobs (she helped out at a couple of charity shops). Of course, she did first give up when she got pregnant with me, but I think it may be hard for you to get lai…err.. pregnant GoF :)
Hope you manage to do it, though I will miss your drunken progress in IRC with the beers tally slowly mounting ;)

My godparents quit smoking, and they didnt really tell me what helped them most, but there was this website where you can see how much money you are saving a day from quitting smoking via how many cigarrets (or packs) you are smoking a day, so if the money is important to you, then maybe you can set up and account there or something… But, best of luck to you, I hope you succeed!

Yesh, the beer tally was fun, but if you are spending so much $$ on beer/cigs then ok, just don't replace smoking/drinking with another "bad" habit. Good luck?

So who else is left that smokes? :(

GoF you seem to have exactly same problems as me haha.
Sometimes I drink too much, yesterday I ran around town naked chasing my friends with a large spoon.
I used to drink a lot more than now, last summer I was drunk like ATLEAST 2-3 days per week. Now I drink maybe once in a month. Drinking is much more easier to quit than smoking.
First weekend is hardest, but then it get's alot easier. After two weeks it should be really easy to quit drinking.

But smoking… Harder, but not too hard.
There are two addictions in smoking:
-nicotine
-social habit

That's why I'm gonna buy some snuss/snuff for like 2-4 weeks so I get all the nicotine I need. In month I have lost the social habbit, and so I can quit using snuss/snuff. It's much easier to quit snuss because it's illegal to sell it in Finland, so I can't buy more.

GoF, you can try buying a pack, then soaking them all with a lot of Vinegar, then smoking it. Will taste like shit, and if you still get an urge to smoke, do it again, then usually after the second time you won't want to do it again.

Or do what The Claw said x)

Big thing when you are your age is the social group. You probably started to 'fit in' with someone or a group of someones. The best way would be to take yourself out of that group for a little bit until you 'good' at saying no to the pressure.

Don't totally abandon them and don't ever do anything with them, but instead of going to the party that night where you KNOW there will be smoking/drinking just say you have other commitments.

Trust me ;) the social part will make it a lot easier. I didn't have to quit, since I never started, but I had to help a friend quit back in high school.

I lost all my friends when they started to drink and smoke and I didn't :(

Anyway, when they are 43 year old and call me drunken saying "Should've never started smoking man…" , I'll just tell them "You go to hell loser, YOU GO TO HELL AND YOU DIE!" :p

Pretty much the hardest part, yes.. I'm fine when I'm home etc. but when I go outside and most of my friends are smoking it's harder. Also at school you quite easily get to know the "smokers" and sort of become a part of the group (aka. always going for a smoke with them on every break at school). So I thought that if I fail now I'll wait a few weeks so there'll be a 1 week (or longer) vacation. Might make it easier not having to go to school.

Not really. Once you haven't smoked for months, then it's pretty much officially quitting. Tho it might become a habit again, even after many years. So once you have smoked, you have never actually "quit". Hard to explain, hope you understand.

Nah. My mom never smoked when she was pregnant and always started after it :/ And my dad hadn't had a smoke for years but then on one occasion decided to smoke 1 cigarette and smokes even today. You can get rid of it after some time, probably depends on the person but you sort of can't "ever smoke again" or so, kind of like with alcoholics, they'll only need just a tiny bit of something with alcohol in it and boom, drunk 24/7 :p

Klean, I quit yesterday at around 1pm :p Haven't had a smoke since, but I wish so much I could have even 1 cig :/

If someone feels suicidal enough, mind smoking

24*60 / 7 * 365 * 1000 ~ 75085714 smokes, if you did, you are atleast 1000 years old :)

So anyway, which's point the above was, to die a year earlier than 'normal', you have to smoke 75085 smokes. So, having an effect on your time left, unless you intend on a dramatic scene at the hospital - "Peter… Tell you mother that…. *AHHH* ", you have quit smoking before it makes any difference.

My bad habit: Addiction to symmetry.

My sister walks by and punches me in one arm, I'm half tempted to piss her off, just so she'll punch me square in the other. It's terrible!

I also have this thing where I see lines extending from all flat surfaces of the room. Be it walls, tables, legs/bases of chairs, etc. I'll force myself to not step on these lines. Otherwise… I don't know what happens :S

Every rug, table, and any other piece of furniture in the house has to be in its correct spot. Or else everything is blown. R0b0t1 can vouch. Do the notches in the screws in my desk have to be perfectly linear, or no?
