I'm really glad to see such bright and intelligent people here at SRL!
I am noticing that people are starting to realize more that we now are in the 21st century, and that they need to think better.
Sorry for slightly hijacking your thread here, but can someone explain me why having 'fantasy friends' of your own isn't accepted, while it is considered okay to worship them, build enormous buildings dedicated to them, sacrifice various objects to them, and even bury dead relatives in the name of that fantasy friend?
Yeah I can.
Some people are simply more skeptical of science than others. We don't choose to blindly believe in a system that was set up 300 years ago. Instead we make our own rules (even though, admittedly, some rules of the scientific method are usefull).
Can science prove/disprove aliens? No. Can science prove/disprove god? No. Can you prove/disprove to me that your balls are larger than your brain without EVIDENCE? Can you prove to me that the universe was created by the big bang? No. That's why it's called the big bang THEORY not the big bang RULE. It's a good theory, but there are exceptions to many of them. Newton's laws of gravity don't apply in curved time-space. So who knows, maybe the rules of the scientific method don't apply everywhere? I.e. God could be an excpetion? We don't know. That's why it's called a FAITH (oh and btw, doubt/questioning stuff is central to religion, believe it or not, and yes, I do believe in science being useful somtimes but not always).
Anyways, to get back on topic… I believe it's a mix of fate and choice. Some things are predestined to happen, and then it's your reaction to these events that matter and build/destroy you as a person. Pure fate would suck, i mean, you'd be a robot wandering a pre-destined path dying a pre-destined death. DAMN… That would suck.
