S.M.A.R.T. Detectability problem...

I havn't gotten a ban for this reason yet but, when scripts log in to rs using SMART, SMART displays that it could not display the video advertisement. Isn't this kinda detectable because the "video advertisement" works fine in my browser? Is anybody else getting this?

Jagex doesn't watch the advertisements. Actually Jagex doesn't actually watch anything :p. I disable the advertisements in Firefox all the time. The only thing being watched is your mouse clicks.

those advertisements dont pop up if your members anyways do they? i dont think ive ever gotten one on my members account. so as long as your p2p you should be fine anyways.

There is no advertisements in members so dont worry about that.

SMART does go against JaGeX's rules, but not one they can detect. They can't detect modified rs clients.

Im 90% positive that Jagex can not detect if the Advertisement is displayed or not, many people use 'Ad-Blockers' these days which block those type of Ads.

If Jagex banned people for not being able to see the Ad, then alot of innocent users would be banned.

I don't think we will be banned for missing the ad, I was just saying it could put us on a "short list" for being banned.

i've heard if you use the report button and report someone, they read your whole client. not sure how true that is, but it makes sense they would.

I don't think that's possible because of the lag it would cause but, you never know!

If the client is modified, it is against their rules.
It is not if the client is the same, and the client must display the ad.

And it is very easy for Jagex to see if someone blocks the ads or not. Just in the <DIV> layer, if the ad doesn't show, it will contact the IP address to them.

As of right now Adblock Plus has 25,305,780 downloads from the Firefox Addon site. This doesn't include the downloads from adblockplus.org, which most likely has more downloads as it shows up first in Google.

I'm not sure, but I actually think that "Could not display ad" message shows up every time, but you can't see it if the ad is up :p.

I wouldn't worry about it though. I can think of one thing right off the top of my head that would work better for detecting non-browsers than some silly div checked (not to mention SMART won't run any Javascript that checks for the existence of the ad :p

Isn't the ad in the game though? I mean, it appears right after you log in and it's in the game window area.

The ad and the Java applet are different..

Yea smart is hidden and Jagex can't detect smart so if you are caught automizing then it is becuase the script is out of date or you were automizing 24/7.

What this thread is about is that in a browser, the applet displays an ad but, in SMART, it doesn't.

it only displays an AD if you a free, a member does not get an advert either in the browser or using the applet. Only f2p get the ads.

it is very unlikely that you will be banned for not displaying the add.

if you really are paranoid why dont you just buy p2p?

I'm not paranoid or anything. I just was thinking that they could catch on to this and ban lots of us! This is simply a discussion

tbh i think its detectable when smart is enabled because when smart is loading it takes forever but then you disable smart and it loads almost instantly :\ strange :P

The same thing happens on RSBot and Nexus (<- maybe not idk i dont use) and there are people who auto on them for long periods of time without bans.

That advert that displays after logging in is like any other ad on the website. The client tells it to display after clicking login and after a few seconds it hides it again. It's a part of the website, not the applet.

As far as I can tell, they can't figure out whether or not you're blocking advertisements and it doesn't really matter anyway. In Firefox, I specifically block the entire box (Adblock Plus) from displaying at login in the first place.

The only issue I see with SMART is that if you pause a script and disable smart to move the mouse on your own, the mouse which may have been in the middle of the rs window (the SMART controlled one) suddenly enters from the bottom (user controlled), may be detectable but even so it is probably indistinguishable from someonw pressing window key+d to minimise all windows, opening rs and then putting the mouse over the applet again.

Simplified, no.

The "can not display ad" thing happens for me in Firefox also because of Adblock Plus, I've never seen one of the ads, but I think they put the wait there since you are basically skipping the ad otherwise

That's good news. RS will just think we're blocking their ads. :)

In a future revision of SMART, I think it would be great if the ads are shown in f2p, or at least users are given the option of showing or hiding the ads… I don't know a whole lot about ad block-detection, but I will say that sites can detect people blocking ads using Adblock Plus, so JaGeX mostly likely can detect if you're blocking them with SMART as well…

The no-blocking ads rule is incorporated so that JaGeX makes more money on it's advertisements, however they aren't going to just up and ban someone for blocking them… Nevertheless, it is one additional, and quite unnecessary risk that can lead to incriminating your account(s).

About the "just become p2p if you're that paranoid" argument… Many SCAR users have "armies" of characters; are they supposed to buy membership for, say 5-10 characters? The point is, it isn't terribly hard to add a button allowing users to choose between displaying ads and not displaying them, even though it may not make any difference in the long run…

SMART only loads the client, not the webpage, so you'd need some serious changes to make something like that work.

My firewall makes it do that. If they block you for that, that is not sufficient evidence because there are multiple reasons why the ad may not be displayed.
