Potw , Program of the week :)

ShowerThoughts

2008-08-06 13:54:15

I know not very original but I saw and noticed there is so many talented programmers on this forum so I thought lets start a Potw, yes i did rip it of from… that other guy :p.

Edit: Remove this message when done, I didn't know where to place this because contains every programmer langauge ;)

# Only 1 program per week
# Follow the rules
# Don't copy code from other sites, general code allowed(Duh).
# Behave.

This Potw will contain 2 challenges, .exe programming(.net?) and Website programming.

Judge:
For now me… and might a good programmer friend of my :)

Also you have to send the source to the judge(s) to confirm u made it and so the judges can learn to. ^^

If I forgot something tell me!

#1
This theme counts for web and OS Programing.

Theme:Image manipulation
Buckley has a new idea, We also take in count the fastest image manipulation, but because there many langauges we also take that in count :)

DeadLine: Not Set.

Contestants:
Bullzeye –> Delphi
TheVoiceInYourHead –>
Hermpie–> C# someone else will judge for me.
Buckley–> C#
There are more if you want to join just post ur app + source when your done in a special thread I am going to make. I will give more info about this.

Hermpie

IMO: This was definitely needed.

I have to tell you that you utterly fail.

"File's" isn't even spelled correctly!
Otherwise good idea, I'll join if you make less provocative and less idiotic themes.

And, please don't make the "themes" too hard. Like, don't tell use to make a CC++ compiler..

Yeah files :p

Also these themes are general and made up in 3 seconds tell me other themes so you will join!

I own the copyright for encryption based competitions - you can accept a court hearing soon.

Also, very little programmers here - I only know of a hand full that can properly code/script in languages outside Scar. Good luck getting contestants.

I will do my best :)

Also just programs that do encryptions not scar + encryptions ;)

About taking speed into consideration, I agree. However seeing as the c* languages are generally faster than Delphi, I also think that you should consider the language it was written in, since it would probably take less skill to write a faster image manipulation program in C++than Delphi.

Oh really? I didn't know C* was faster then Delphi >.>.

Maybe you could Multi thread it and such? lol.

and I don't think anyone is programming in C++, just C#.

If the theme is image manipulation, what must we to do the image?

Also, you could just turn on the optimizations inside the Borland IDE. The code it produces is fast enough, believe me. Also, if you are really conscious about speed, look into the Free Pascal Compiler and its IDE, Lazarus (it should look pretty once DL'ed, but you might need to rebuild it into the right WM… if you're interested, I'll tell you). They might be the same speed-wise, but IDK.

The two languages are fairly the same, but they balance out: Delphi is RAD, so the contestant will have more time to improve, but the C languages *might* be slightly faster, and, C languages are not RAD, so the contestant should be judged less harshly.

EDIT: And although I don't think anyone will be using inline asm, take into consideration that it interferes with the compiler optimization.

Yea, what does RAD mean and all you gotta do is resize the image and convert the image to another format I believe.

Anything what you want ;)
if it is a part of image manipulation

Also, I think the death line will be moved…

R0b0t1

2008-08-07 15:56:17

RAD is Rapid development, as in the language is easy to use and you quickly generate changes and updates.

I'll join the next one, I think I'm a little late in joining this one… But try to make both a webdev and a programmer's one each week too ;D

EDIT: What I'm really saying, because all of those languages do not have much speed difference, is that Delphi should be judged just a little more harshly because its easier to program, and C# a little less harshly, and C/C++ a little more lax. Not a whole lot or it would be unbalanced, and we don't want that…

I dunno, I don't really have Windows atm so I couldn't really display the results / do anything except mess with the DI bits.

EDIT: I'll join as Delphi, but I can only supply the Lazarus project and the times benchmarked from my computer (Which is 64 bit, I dunno if it should count :p)

IMO, C++ is more difficult to code in than Delphi, so faster is fair. However I have no experience for "Image Manipulation" in either language, so I could be wrong there.

I hardly know anything in the way of Delphi, and didn't find anything useful for me for image changing in C++. I'll jump into the next round (and will probably be using a new language).

You should make the next round Brainfuck only.

Buckleyindahouse

2008-08-08 15:09:42

And brainfuck is?

R0b0t1

2008-08-08 15:14:54

If you program image manipulation in brainfuck, you automatically win. Meh, I don't think I'll be in this round…

Because I think people should consider REAL programming, Scar is one but…

Scar is just not allowed way to easy, is one point and there are more ;)

Dan Cardin

2008-08-10 14:30:44

i would consider it harder than delphi because delphi's form editor is way easier to use and automates a lot of stuff for you, and delphi has tons more components than SCAR does. I guess its your choice but i dont see why if you're not ruling out all interpreted languages.
